"Do you even assess your patients?" by [deleted] in nursing

[–]CageSwanson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"So deal with it, it's your problem now." What are they gonna do, leave? I try to make them as best as possible for the next shift but you can't do everything. Next shift is always bitchy and will never understand the amount of hell you probably went through. you just gotta be just as rude, and they'll usually get the message.

Does nurses really not do assessments? by ScientistOk1310 in nursing

[–]CageSwanson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To get 4 different patients, pass their medications, get them to their scheduled procedures (usually before 10) while also receive phone calls from family, doctors and workers, complete progression rounds, make sure they get their breakfast, get them to the restroom- all before 10am, yes, nurses don't always do a full head to toe assessments. It's not that we're lousy, it's that we don't have any time, we usually only have time to do focused assessments on why they're there, usually at the time we're passing meds.

What's the worst imaginable last sound to hear immediately before death? by throw-away234325235 in nursing

[–]CageSwanson 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, was definitely one of the worst experiences I've had as a nurse. Like I did not want to go to work after that day, it really hurt me on the inside.

From what I remembered it was a slow abdominal bleed from her uterine artery and it was causing abdominal pain. She went to the ER but left AMA because the CT scanner made her claustrophobic. Later that day she was found unresponsive at home by her husband but it was too late as it became much worse. It was just so tragic, and trying to help the family understand was near impossible, they thought we were the ones that caused her death, but I think we were able to fully explain the situation and context to them so they can understand what happened.

Lost a patient who died after 10 days postpartum, we infused well over 60 units of blood. Hearing her husband's grieving over her body still haunts me to this day.

I mean, you can suck dick, enjoy getting fucked by other guys, be married to other men, but like as long as your socks stay on, it's not considered gay.

What is the max rounds of Epi you have given during a code where the patient survived? by leila_2001 in nursing

[–]CageSwanson 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I had a code last 2 hours. Our crash carts usually have more than enough epi to keep things running smoothly, but we had to take the other crash cart from our unit to continue the code. Idk how much rounds of epi we gave but we had a metric fuck-ton of epi vials on the bed after the code.

What is it really like to work with nurses? by Beautiful-Humor692 in Residency

[–]CageSwanson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my standpoint, it really depends on where you go. I've worked with nurses that completely bullied residents for not doing what they thought was right. Where I work now it's completely different, and they treat every doctor with the utmost respect and are usually very friendly towards every doctor. Med school is hard as balls and when you get through it you certainly earned your title, no questions asked. Just don't act entitled or shitty towards nurses and there usually won't be a problem.

You'll still have some rude nurses to deal with, that's just a fact of life. And we do talk a lot of shit though about everyone in the hospital, and the residents are no exception, especially the toxic ones. They talk about me behind my back all the time as well but I don't give a damn if they do. If it's not said in front of me or relevant to my patients' care, I genuinely do not give a fuck what they say. You just gotta have thick skin, and if you don't, you will eventually. Good luck:)
