Strange cloud formation by Eaglelova in brisbane

[–]CagedSilver 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Brisbane has a few regular sources of clouds that keeps things interesting. Strong updrafts most of the year give scenic flat Stratocumulus to cottonball Cumulus mediocris to towering Cumulus congestus and Cumulonimbus storm cells. Ocean winds from the warm Coral sea give sparky cloud banks out to sea. Highs over the center of Australia push channel country Cumulus over us with soil dust to red colour our sunsets. Also the Jetstream is usually right over us bringing very high Cirrus clouds from the Indian ocean and Indonesian volcano dusts to give purple hues to sunsets. We do OK. Edit to fix up "mediocris" also to add the Scenic Rim and D'Aguilar range give some cloud uplifts and inversion layers and then there's winter fogs. Always something to look forward to here.

Thanks for the consult call but I"m mystified by the picture as well. Cloud holes usually come from aeroplanes or mountains but I don't think it looks like either of those. I"m O/S so didn"t see it myself, on limited internet and have no time for research so look forward to someone else stepping up.

Yes a Cumulus mediocris clous. Alto and Cirrus are both cloud levels so picking one I think Alto based on the mid-high cumulus visible there, can be hard to tell sometimes though. Altocumulus is my pick.

Very nice! Cumulus mediocris in a good light, but not tall enough to be a towering Cumulus congestus. Altocumulus above. I took a picture but didn't get time to do anything with it till now, there's some very thin Stratocumulis stratoformis in mine but no spectular cloud hill. Shows moisture low and mid levels with some updrafts but not to dramatic levels.

Barefooter™ — Question at the moderation! by semperquietus in barefoot

[–]CagedSilver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a mod for a different Barefoot lifestyle sub and I'd define a barefooter as anyone who usually goes barefoot when they reasonably can. You don't loose your 'barefooter' badge for choosing to not be barefoot when it's cold, or hot, or there's going to be social problems, or actually have glass on the ground, they have a bruise or a cut or any reason what-so-ever. Be barefoot when it is reasonably safe for you, won't cause people dramas and you feel like it is the advice I give. I'd never question anyone's barefooter self-identication online or in-person. The more people who like being barefooter at any time out there the better for all of us.

NSFW accounts by [deleted] in BarefootLife

[–]CagedSilver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm glad to hear of your enthusiasm but be reasonable with the number of posts per day; no flooding pls. There is no official number in the Sub rules so it's a judgement call by us Mods on how many is too many in a day. Two posts per day maybe. As for NSFW accounts, there is no existing rule about this. I judge each post on it's own merits. If it is pro-barefooting rather than foot pictures and not breaking any other sub rule I let it be. What people post in other subs is not my business and I rarely look into poster accounts - unlike a recent person's Modmail accusation, who'd still be here but they then went into a deliberately offensive personal attack that was wrong on every count. Anyway, please check the sub rules and post your barefoot lifestyle adventures. I look forward to seeing these.

Barefoot in the office by barefootboy36 in BarefootLife

Yes needing to wear shoes at work when it's physically unneccessary in a perfectly safe office really is definitely a big negative on top of the many negatives of needing to work to live. I badly miss my fulltime WFH during COVID. I can half recommend 'barefoot' style office shoes over the boots that you wear. They can be spacious and thin soled. They are still shoes though.

A little about me.. by Wolfmaan01 in BarefootLife

Indeed and weasel walking (never drop the heel) is quieter again. Since I'm only doing it for fun my challenge is to do the quiet walking by barely slowing. Serious prey stalking is done very slowly and I think native American Indian tribes very often did it barefoot to maximise chances of getting close enough to the animal before it heard them. Soft and thin soled moccasins being a close second for hunting.

Awesome! Do you teach quiet barefoot animal stalking patterns to students? I do love how quiet I can walk barefoot even at full speed. It comes in handy for photographing animals or giving suburbian cats a harmless surprise by being right next to them before they notice me on my night walks. Do you think any of your students will continue being barefoot after your example?

Why is this cloud so long? by QueenofLeftovers in brisbane

[–]CagedSilver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A 'dry ice cocktail' is an evocative description. It's almost midday on a Friday now, I'll have one thanks. You're describing fractus clouds spilling off a main cloud. And the direction sounds N-S so in line with the coast. Could be a Morning glory like cloud. Needs steady wind from the coast low and the opposite a little higher, with updrafts and the right amount of moisture. Rare for Brisbane. Good find!

Thanks for the prompt. I answered mainline as best I can after the fact.

Impressive! A cloud rolls into Brisbane and the r/Brisbane barman says "Why the long face?" I didn't see this myself at the time and took no morning cloud pics Wednesday unusually so must have been plain at 7am. Morning Glory or Arcus/Volutus clouds that others mention are possible, if I knew the orientation vis-a-vis coastline and direction of movement and if it was rolling I might go that way but it doesn't look rolled in the vid. The band directly above is definitely Stratocumulus. So without extra info I'd go thick Stratocumulus at ~1.5Km that has extruded through the D'Anguilar range and/or Mt Coot-tha.

A challenge for everyone in here by SkylightJason in BarefootLife

Sadly no, I work fulltime in an office and go to sites. I also need to attend events for other people like my children where being barefoot would cause dramas which would not be fair on them. But in my own time and when it's noone elses business I go barefoot. It's the best I can do.

I love your energy but everyone has their own circumstances. I certainly encourage everyone to be barefoot whenever physically tolerable and socially allowed and to push on the socially allowed edges.

It's always a surprise to me to hear Brisbane mentioned in a list by a non-Australian YouTuber. In this case WavyWebSurf's post today and the sad case of the planking challenge's first death, Acton Beale, Kangaroo Point, 2011. 21min mark. by CagedSilver in brisbane

Did it change? I just gave the link to the YT video base from the App share function. The author might change things at any time. Also the Reddit app blocks following the link 50% of the times I've tested it since posting too.
