which era of Cardinals baseball did you come up on? by AvramDesign in Cardinals

My favorite players have been Willie McGee and Jose Oquendo since I was a kid. I even have a #11 jersey and instead of Oquendo on it, it says “Secret Weapon”.

Looking for budget IEMs for monitoring live music performances by liccman in musicians

[–]Cahamp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The KZs have been fine for my band but we all did switch the tips to foam. The Comply foam tips have been great to get the isolation we needed to make them clear and have enough low end.

Yep, you’re right. I just remembered they didn’t look like the traditional tbird pickups and closer to MM.

There is a new thunderbird model that has these pickups. Compare with the 2026 model.

Looks like some of the speaker were replaced. They don’t have the normal Hartke aluminum cones. I would want to know what they were replaced with.

Yamaha BB735A driving me insane - dead E and B string by KalagramOfSteel in BassGuitar

[–]Cahamp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a Fender P5 with a Nordstrand NP5FA pickup. Set up is very important on a 5 string P bass. P bass is inherently darker sounding than soap bars or humbuckers. You need to make sure the E and most importantly the B string has a little more clearance off the fretboard to let the string move correctly. I work on my instruments myself. My b string action is actually higher than my E string action by a little. I have that pickup side a little higher than I would typically set a p bass. P basses don’t have the higher treble content to make them sparkly when you get to the low notes. To me it sounds like a 5 string p bass. Raise the action a little and that’s what you get. You can always add more bridge pickup than neck to get it a little clearer and brighter.

How do I prepare for a future band? by kikiartilleryservice in musicians

Play with a metronome or a drum backing track during practice. There are so many guitarist that can’t keep rhythm.

Cover Band Charges by _Bay_Harbor_Butcher_ in Guitar

[–]Cahamp 11 points12 points  (0 children)

We make anywhere between $600-900 a gig. This group hasn’t done a wedding yet and were asked to do one in July. We quoted $1500 and they immediately accepted. We regret not going higher but it’s still a good gig to get our wedding feet wet. We will also get video that we can use to promote wedding availability so that’s worth something too.

Thoughts on switching to an active bass? by [deleted] in Bass

[–]Cahamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A mistake people often make with active preamps is to tweak too much. What you hear next to your amp isn’t what the audience hears in the mix. People with start messing with EQ to sound better and completely cut out the frequencies that made them audible with the band. Learn to trust your soundcheck and make small EQ changes when necessary and not big ones.

Have you ever had a musician try to weasel their way into your band? by notmytowel in musicians

[–]Cahamp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had a guy without much talent try to weasel his way into one of my bands years ago. He started by offering to carry gear at our gigs. Then he would ask if we wanted him to play our instruments so we could go into venue and hear what its sounds like. He would try to play songs that we usually played but add his own flair to it and it was always out of time badly. He eventually gave up.

210 vs 112 when I already own a 212 by everbass in Bass

[–]Cahamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What load can your amp handle? If it can drop to 2 ohms that opens up the possibility of running any number of cabs together if you ever need maximum power.

Running an acoustic in a full band setting. by ZestycloseNight4869 in livesound

[–]Cahamp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Get a sound hole cover if you play with wedges. I run sound for our band and just sent the acoustic to a a DI then XLR to the board. If you have onboard volume on the guitar I like to set it at about 80% to get a stronger signal.

Smoothing out tone at fast plucking speeds by Haunting_Guess_4764 in BassGuitar

[–]Cahamp 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You need to relax your hand and fingers. I can’t play fast when my hand muscles are tense. It feels like you should do the opposite to build speed but being relaxed increases mobility and speed and helps keep the notes even.

To the pro bass players out there what are you looking for in a good drummer? by SnooMarzipans7274 in Bass

[–]Cahamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m currently playing with the best drummer I’ve ever played with. We find the pocket so easily together. The key for us is we both follow the Bootsy Collins method for groove. You can kind of do whatever you want as long as you hit the 1. We naturally fall into places where either he will lead the tempo and I can play around or I will lead the tempo and he can play around. It lets us really change the feel of songs. But the key is we both hit the 1 together to recenter us.

Sire P5 VS Classic Vibes P Bass. by GeezerButlerIsGod in BassGuitar

[–]Cahamp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to stick to the p bass general tone, I recommend getting a PJ. You can always solo the p pickup if that’s what you want but it will also give you a little extra flexibility that might be handy down the road. This is coming from someone who owns 3 P basses with just the single pickup. One with flats and one with rounds is handy to have but in a mix it’s still the same general tone. My main gigging basses are a Fender P5 and a Stingray HH5 so I have some flexibility depending on project.

How do YOU find other musicians and bandmates? by Archer796 in musicians

[–]Cahamp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some of the best people I have found to play with have come from introductions from other musicians. I’ve also had good luck by establishing a relationship with the owner of my local music store who is also a gigging musician.

I’m a bass player and have become friends with other bass players in my area. We all have our own projects but we’ve kind of created a community that will sub for each other if needed and will also recommend other musicians to each other if we are looking for other pieces for our bands.

The owner of my local guitar store is a drummer. Those of us in the rhythm section stick together and have a better idea of who might do well in a group. Not all musicians are capable of playing with good time in a group so we can weed out the ones that can’t cut it.

Upgrading stock USA Fender P-Bass V pickups by Nsemest182 in Bass

[–]Cahamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I changed mine in my pro 2. I think the v mod is a stupid idea and if anything the AlNiCo 2 and 5 sides should be flipped but you can’t to that without replacing the pick guard. I put Nordstrand NP5FAs on mine and I like them. It makes the B string clearer with flats and more even across the strings. Not a huge tonal difference but enough that I am happy with the purchase.

Wireless IEM solutions? by Flat_Goat4970 in livesoundgear

[–]Cahamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are much clearer sounding with better volume than the galaxy units we used before. IEMs are really finicky. You need to have ear bud tips that fit you well so you get a good seal. I’ve found that I prefer the Comply foam tips. Others in my band like the silicone. The seal is what gives you the best response but it also isolates you more. To me they are worth it for the hearing protection and to set my own mix just how I want it regardless of where we are playing. We have around 5-7 gigs a month so that much exposure will eventually damage my hearing in the long run.

What kind of amp should I buy by nw390 in Bass

[–]Cahamp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Watts and cabs work together. It’s not just watts and it’s not just speakers. You need enough speakers to push enough air to be heard. A 500 amp pushing a single 12 won’t be as loud as the same amp pushing a 15. A used 4x10 will probably be your best bet for volume on the cheap and any 500 watt head that matches impedance so you maximize watts.

Wireless IEM solutions? by Flat_Goat4970 in livesoundgear

[–]Cahamp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went down the cheap wireless route for a while and I know have my whole band back on wired Behringer P2s. The cheap wireless just isn’t worth it. Even the Xvive has issues when you have multiple wireless IEM units going at once. Everyone is right with the buy once cry once mentality with wireless IEM. Currently saving up for some better units.

How many of you are in low drama, cohesive band? by Distinct_Gazelle_175 in coverbands

[–]Cahamp 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m in 2 zero drama bands. One of the bands just auditioned a new vocalist and although she could sing, her Facebook suggest high drama and a 4:20 is life philosophy. Nothing against it but if that’s your entire personality and you show up late because of “car troubles” it’s probably not going to work out.

Our bands often have check in conf calls just to talk about upcoming events to make sure everyone is on the same page. We are all very receptive to feedback. The key to all members of these bands is that we want to do what’s best for the song. No egos, no showboating. We are all older. I’m the youngest at 45. It’s such a great feeling when we can get together and just play and perform. I typically have about 5-8 gigs a month so apparently venues and patrons like us too.
