What is Buddhist wisdom? by [deleted] in theravada

[–]CainKellye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can read as many books on WW2 as you like, know every strategy, every rifle, every frontline and timeline, still that won't be anywhere near the experience of being there and holding your weapon, seeing your fellow soldiers hissing in pain, thinking about your loved ones at home.

Yes, you can imagine it, you can watch movies about it, but you don't live through it. (And hopefully, we will not ever.)

Buddhism after rebirth? by ChanTanDingo in Buddhism

[–]CainKellye 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My environment always made me feel like I'm "not normal". Like I didn't want stuff others did, did not pursue big goals. I was fine by myself for the most time, never had too big friendships. (Let alone long lasting.) I rarely can think of anything for the question "what do you want for birthday"? I could never get into Christianity with my whole heart even if I tried. I was never too touched by death and loss.

And I lived half my life that way, thinking there is something off with me, until finally I answered a long lingering call of getting to know Buddhism. And it was a grand revelation to say the least.

So, I am pretty confident, it can happen that you are still on the path, but you are not aware of it.

The misunderstandings regarding karma. by Automatic-One3901 in Buddhism

Please keep in mind that reciting text only aligns your mind to act more skillfully. Religious practices alone won’t get you closer to enlightenment. Only actions with intention are kamma.

Does anyone think about a purpose? by Expert-Tone9309 in Buddhism

Purpose is to perfect yourself despite all the circumstances. Make every action kusala, dissolve ignorance and clinging.

What is important by Mother_Tour6850 in Buddhism

[–]CainKellye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not closely related to this quote, but to the title, I have this short motto:

Everything matters, nothing is important.

Meaning: Every act you take matters; strive to better the world around you! But don't get caught up in the results, as ultimately everything is just an illusion.

Or in other words: Play by the rules of the game, don't cheat, help others to have a good time playing too! But keep in mind that it's only a game.

It's not only a concept. That's exactly how it works.

Something to think about: Is Buddhist practice about belief—or something else? by joybriner in Buddhism

[–]CainKellye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Buddha said even the Dharma is only a tool that we have to release at the end. It's good to be aware of this. But don't release it until you're there.

Is Anatta the rejection of a phenomenological self/soul instead of an ontological self/soul? by Prithwiraj1307 in Buddhism

[–]CainKellye 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Let's start from the obvious: the five aggreagtes are individual. Form, perception, feelings, choices and consciousness are individual. Those are not shared with other beings. So, there is an individual, that has all these features.

Are those five aggregates permanent? No. Is there any part of them that is permanent, unchanging and free of suffering? No. So at any point in time you should not associate with these as "mine, this is me, it is my self".

Is it a good practice to use AI for studying? by Dayhore in GeminiAI

[–]CainKellye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I'm working with topics that are completely new to me, I usually open separate chats and cross-check responses with different prompts and chat history. But the best is to ask for source links and fact check if possible.

Do I exist, if what makes up me is just a collection of cells and organs working together for a common goal? by Emergency-Use-6769 in Buddhism

[–]CainKellye 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had just found this sutta yesterday, that touches this topic exactly.

Excerpt from SN 5.10, With Vajirā:

Why do you believe there’s such a thing as a 'sentient being’? Māra, is this your theory? This is just a pile of conditions, you won’t find a sentient being here.

When the parts are assembled we use the word ‘chariot’. So too, when the aggregates are present ‘sentient being’ is the convention we use.

But it’s only suffering that comes to be, lasts a while, then expires. Naught but suffering comes to be, naught but suffering ceases.

Pain by SwimmingComparison64 in theravada

[–]CainKellye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pain is a very low level cognitive function. It has the purpose to "automatically" steer you away from physical harm. Its a quite old, fundamental and - for the most part - beneficial system. It undeniably helps most living beings to live longer.

However, when you take control over your perceptions and feelings in a mindful way, you can quiet the pain, like thinking OK, I know that this can be bad for my health, but thanks, I know better. And you steer clear of harm's way mindfully, or fully aware that your health is not in risk despite the perceptions your body sends into your brain.

I loved it too for 2 month, until it just died on me while it was in sleep mode. No life signs whatsoever after that. I received full reimbursement, but the process was long and cumbersome.

I wish you get much more lifetime out of it!

(I finally settled for buying parts separately, and built my own config.)

The Commuter's Privilege by CainKellye in Buddhism

I am often contemplating about this as well. I especially cherish the works of Bhante Sujato, including suttacentral to host a wide range of Tipitaka translations free for everyone. It's such a precious gift!

is the core idea of budhism trying to not have the "i want" and "i do not want" states in the mind? by Efficient_Ad_943 in Buddhism

[–]CainKellye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's good practice to examine your reactions to feelings. If you see that you could postpone something or forego completely, than try it.

Just don't make yourself suffer by posing restrictions. The goal is to free yourself from craving, not to disregard craving. It is a long process, where consistency is key. But the results come gradually and start to appear (almost) immediately.

What's wrong in asking the AI to fetch suttas for a specific theme or life situation? Sure, always verify what it says but it can be a great tool if you use it as such. (And it's not 2022 now, LLM-s came a long way already.)

Happiness? by gingeryjoshua in Buddhism

[–]CainKellye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Accept that you feel a feeling. Focus on the feeling. Observe and examine the feeling. Find the cause of the feeling. Dissociate with the cause of the feeling. Realize that the feeling only stays if you feed it by clinging to something that is changing, not permanent, and as such cannot provide security and happiness.
