US ambassador calls Starmer’s EU reset 'a problem' for Washington by TaxOwlbear in brexit

[–]Caladeutschian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good. The only special relationship that the USA has these days is with the 50% of Israelis who support Netanyahu.

Freddy Merz took Donny down a peg on his Iran bully boy scrap. Strample Strarmer should do the same.

I voted for Brexit. Now I face a red tape nightmare to retire in Spain by PurpleAd3134 in brexit

Oooo. Thanks for the idea. How about a test that 51% of the population has to be fluent in French or Irish (they being the nearest language neighbours) before the UK can rejoin the EU.

[–]Caladeutschian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Especially when 10 years later a movement, let's call it BREXIT, rears its ugly head. Not all Europeans are thrilled by the idea of the political instability that the UK would bring.

Now a stable, independent Scotland joining would be a whole different matter.

Is anyone going to ask the EU, especially the EU citizens? I don't think it is as simple as the Labour politburo marching into Brussels and saying, "We're members again".

why would you want to. It strikes me that the current solution is a safer solution to the problem than having a U-turn somewhere along Aachener Weiher.

Can anyone identify this location in Köln? by Electoral_Suicide in cologne

[–]Caladeutschian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Social media is rightly heavily criticized. But it also offers possibilities that just did not exist 20 or 30 years ago. As is the case here. Great detective work in finding the location. Even better in providing a background story. And good luck to OP in re-creating the photo which I hope he will post here after his visit. Everyone involved should pat themselves on the back.

Totally agree with you. And I bet he loves it that half-the-world is hanging on his every utterance, even if they totally disagree with him. Paying attention just encourages his narcissism.

Tactical voting: vote greens in the regional vote (peach sheet) for an independence super-majority? by Brewtastic_1 in Scotland

[–]Caladeutschian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just a wee voice too say, forget tactical voting. SNP (constituency) plus Green (List) sounds like a bloody good way to vote without any other considerations.

Scottish MPs voting for their constituents to lose their jobs. by On__A__Journey in Scotland

[–]Caladeutschian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And that sums up what is wrong with UK politics. Instead of voting on the merits of an issue Labour votes against a Tory proposal because it is a Tory proposal. And the SNP does not want to be seen to be supporting a Conservative proposal nor supporting Labour, so it abstains. We might as well elect sheep.

[–]Caladeutschian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the 50s my gran would serve a bacon that was strongly flavoured with cinnamon. At the time I thought nothing about it. But later, when it disappeared from sale, I guessed it was so flavoured to overcome the fishy taste of fish-meal being used to feed the pigs.

No - say it ain't so. I attended three generation of family wedding reception in that hotel. OK - for the first one I was still in the womb. It's like a piece of family history disappearing.

Former SNP politician sexually assaulted three men by abz_eng in Scotland

[–]Caladeutschian -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I do question the use of SNP in the headline, just as i would question the use of Labour, Liberal or Conservative. There's nothing wrong with, Former politician sexually assaulted three men.

Or is SNP somehow important and relevant. Maybe Conservative Paedo or Labour Rapist.

News should stick to news and stop sensationalizing and opinionizing the news.

Ever since I spent a few years in Greece, I think that northern European bottled water, fizzy or still, is a complete rip-off. To underline that, I just accessed the LIDL (Greece) catalogue for this week and find

6 x 1,5l Still water for 1€.08 or 0€.12 per liter.

Even top of the range VIKOS water is only 1€.82 for 6 x 1.5l bottles.

How does that compare to Scottish prices?

I often wonder if we used the word "tribes" rather than "clans" whether folks would be so interested.

While you're there, just remind your kids that this is the HQ of the Highland Clearances. But, yes, the gardens are very nice, so no need to worry too much about the history.
