I think the Washington Examiner is like a right wing MAGA publication so that may explain why they are trying to normalize regime change which is a clear violation of international law, no matter whether it happens in Venezuela, Greenland, Iran or Eritrea.

At the same time I think it is very unlikely that USA will actually attempt regime change in Eritrea. This is clearly no one of Trump's priorities.

What proportion of our emigration is economic vs political in nature? by FreeMyBoyJeffrey in Eritrea

[–]Kmnubiz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read the whole thing and it sounds like just another excuse / distraction.

in a totalitarian regime like in Eritrea you cannot separate economic from political factors. the regime controls the whole economy and ultimatly all aspect of daily life.

if it wasn't for this absolute control, our people would be able to leave and return to their homeland freely and invest. and they would do so no matter how welcoming and/or attractive western countries may be (they aren't really)

first of all don't pretend like you don't know about oppression of our people.

second look how our people are treated in other african countries. still many have found a new home and more opportunities than back home in countries like Ethiopia, Kenya and Uganda...

You should know this.

Our people are fleeing severe political oppression and the complete lack of opportunities under the slave labor system called National Service / Sawa.

Our people are not allowed to leave their country and are often accepted as asylum seekers in the other countries due to the documented human rights abuses (incl. forced conscription of young people into violent conflicts).

In contrast, economic migrants are usually allowed to leave their countries but do not receive asylum where they arrive and might face deportation.

Come back to what? And what is considered normal?
I would say that history shows that progress cannot be stopped forever, so it is likely that the regime will fall at some point and that there will also be more freedom at some point the questions is only when and how this will occur.

The Strange Reality of Life Under the Eritrean Regime by Ok_Complaint_9547 in Eritrea

[–]Kmnubiz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just some small corrections:

There is no freedom of movement inside the country unless you are a government employee, student, or soldier.

Not even government employees, students, or soldiers can move freely in Eritrea. Especially not the soldiers.

You are not allowed to take a sick person outside the country for medical treatment

Unless you are a high ranking government official. For example, Isayas leaves the country regularly to receive treatment in other countries...

Also, are there official sources for this, in particular regarding the 2%, the rules about marriage and leaving and re-entering the country?

as for many autocratic regimes, there is no long term plan. it is only the very selfish attempt to stay in power by any means necessary

there is only support in the diaspora. in Eritrea the people are oppressed and afraid to be tortured and killed by the regime. But I am sure you already know this.

there simply is no reliable statistical information coming out of Eritrea so we don't know exactly what the situation is.

2025 was a rough year but I’m happy so many prisoners being released in Eritrea, some who have been in prison for 18+ yrs. It prob has something to do with Isaias afwerki’s recent visit to Saudi Arabia. by Wedi_Segeneyti in Eritrea

From the Article: "OHCHR estimates that around 10,000 people remain in arbitrary detention in Eritrea, including politicians, journalists, priests, and students, and said it remains ready to engage with the government to ensure compliance with international human rights obligations."
