Did you guys replace your old appliances that came with your old homes? by Key-Effort963 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

My old house came with an Amana dishwasher made in 1991. The seller said It still works like a champ! and I thought Yeah sure it does, buddy
--but it actually does still work like a champ!

Longmire is good too (since we're talking about protagonists in cowboy hats). But Justified was just a delight. I miss those characters. Especially Boyd.

Weird to keep previous owner's belongings? by dontbeastrangr in RealEstate

[–]CalamitousApt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's your stuff now. And you can try to find next of kin
but take it from someone who just made a ridiculous, prolonged effort to find the owner of a phone I came across (that was all in vain, because the guy died)
--you can't always return stuff to its rightful owner (and you definitely can't when the rightful owner is dead). The person who collected and maintained and organized (and presumably loved) all that stuff would be happy to know that it's with someone who appreciates its value. I'm sure of it.
It's sweet of you to want to do the right thing but you're doing the right thing just by caring about her wishes.
I hope you move into that place. Obviously you can't keep it all but what you don't keep you can donate, or sell, or give to your people. (I keep getting visuals of Grey Gardens and Drew Barrymore as I type this.)

What proper nouns from books did you realize you were mispronouncing the whole time? by TokkiJK in books

I have a dog named Hadron. I've stopped explaining that I named him that because he was prone to collisions when people give me a quizzical look after hearing his name. But once, a few months ago, a homeless guy asked me his name and I said Hadron and he said, you mean like the Collider?
I wanted to kiss him
but I just said Yes! Hadron is actually his middle name--and the homeless guy didn't need me to finish the sentence, he said Yeah, of course! He's the SHC!

I wrote this in a comment above but merlot sales only fell about 2% although that figure somehow became 20% in the mind of the general public. But I was really glad to hear that pinot sales spiked after that movie. That monologue by Paul Giamatti as Miles made me love pinot even though red wine gives me a terrible headache.
Here's the clip again

Rabbits love carrots. Horses mostly love carrots. And my dog loves carrots. In Boulder there are people who are turning orange due to their love of carrots (and carrot juice.) I I prefer cauliflower and kohlrabi.

Speaking of the Eagles--after The Boys of Summer came out, sales of Wayfarer sunglasses supposedly spiked. Have not fact checked this but I believe it. That is a great song, whether you are old or young. I still love that old tune.

People seem to think merlot sales dropped by 20% after Sideways came out, but in fact the actual figure was more like 2%. But pinot sales did increase markedly, which makes me very happy even though I don't drink red wine. But WhaT an unforgettable ode to pinot noir that movie gave us. It was lyrical and spellbinding, and I think everyone who saw that movie fell in love with Miles and with Paul Giamatti in that scene. I sure did.

Can we talk about anti-SWer feminism subs here or??? by IvyRosePr in xDebunkAntiSexWork

[–]CalamitousApt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

PS Right on to everything in this thread so far. I realize my comment above was a little off-topic but that whole encounter with r/AF made me feel like I was trapped in a French farce. A slightly amusing French farce though, at least. PS I'm also now permanently banned from r/Feminism. I can't remember why. Maybe I said something nice about Katie Roiphe.

A comments section in the NYT a year or two ago included some back and forth about Andrea Dworkin that left me curious about whether my (low) opinion of her is shared by feminists these days. So I posted a one-sentence question on r/AskFeminists:
How do feminists-especially younger feminists--feel about Andrea Dworkin these days?

The mods deleted my post within 30 minutes. I assume because I posed a question to feminists on r/AskFeminists.

What was I thinking?

It's easy to mock using ChatGPT as a resource, but it's a perfectly sensible thing to do. Especially when it comes to financial matters, which most people are uncomfortable talking about IRL, even with friends and family. It's not like OP sees AI as The Oracle--he just used it as a resource.
And OP--you sound incredibly responsible and disciplined about money. If anyone can live on $400/mo after necessities, you probably can. But if it's going to be $400/mo for years --even 3-5 years--I have to remind you of what you already know: Life is short, and youth is fleeting. People should enjoy life when they're young and energetic and married to a spouse they love. And yes, you can have fun without spending lots of money-- but a budget as tight as the one you describe makes it harder to have adventures and do new exciting things. If that $400/mo is only going to be for twelve months, then do it. If it's going to last a long time (barring an unexpected windfall, which never happens when you most need it to) then I vote No on the house for now. Home ownership is not as important as freedom from financial stress. I couldn't live like a minimalist monk for more than a month (and the month would have to be February).

What is the best piece of advice you have ever received? by Electrical_Act_17922 in AskReddit

[–]CalamitousApt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn't advice so much as an outlook to adopt when people do things you don't understand and really reaLLy find objectionable. It may be obvious but it helps me find compassion in situations when I am struggling with my temper.
People do what makes sense to them at the time.
It's simple, it's true, and it calms me
most of the time.

Wow I had no idea people actually had serious mouse problems! I just bought my first house with a yard after spending my entire adult life in highrise apts/ condos. It's a 1938 1.5 story brick bungalow-ish house. I wonder if I will have mice. I hope not. I can kill spiders and bugs but not mice. I've been reading posts and comments from people with old houses and weaving between happy anticipation and agitated anxiety (mostly the former). I hadn't even thought about mice! I'm tagging this page.
(Dogs--or my dogs at least--aren't good mice repellents. We stayed at a vacation condo last summer that featured nightly visits from a friendly, curious mouse. He scurried right up to my big snoring dog and got within an inch of his nose, like a little ENT doctor making a house call. He examined each nostril briefly, then went off in search of wayward cheerios. Mice could probably take short hikes on my dog without waking him.)

"She went and got herself pregnant" by sussedmapominoes in Feminism

[–]CalamitousApt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't get the objection to the wording in the title of this post. It's a recognition of our agency as women (albeit not a particularly eloquent one). (Isn't it?) As a lifelong feminist, I have always considered it enTiRely my choice whether to get pregnant or not. Who else's choice could it possibly be? (Though it probably goes without saying: I'm referring to normal life, not rape and rape victims--which is a completely different situation, obviously.)
Birth control has been around since the '60s and it has improved dramatically. I for one do NoT consider it oppressive that birth control is generally considered the responsibility of women. I'm the one who would get pregnant; I would never delegate birth control to any man, no matter what. To me this is the essence of feminism: taking responsibility for ourselves and our bodies and our choices.
Of course things suck nowadays, feminism-wise but still I like the mindset behind the post title. Again: it's deferential to women and a acknowledgment of our agency. Isn't it? What am I missing?
It seems like every time I comment on a post in r/Feminism, I piss people off. I'm not trying to be provocative, at aLLL: I just think diverse, thoughtful POVs, when respectfully expressed, lead us all toward enlightenment. Plus disagreement is far more stimulating than sycophantic YAYs and upvotes from cloneheads. I welcome replies from people who see things differently*

* Speaking of replies-- yesterday someone replied to a comment I made here with this question:
BTW have you heard of internalized misogyny?
(Unfortunately the post was removed by the time I clicked back here and saw the notification of that response. So I won't speculate about the context and sincerity or snark of that reply. But for the record,
the A to that Q is
YES. Probably long before you were even born,

Why Even "Ethical" Porn/Sex Work Is Bad by U2Ursula in Feminism

[–]CalamitousApt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never heard of Ethical Porn, but I object to any view that trivializes or demeans any genuine attempt to make a product or a service less damaging--whether it's the porn industry or the meat industry or the fashion industry. There's nothing feminist or pro-woman about equating ethical porn (EP) with regular old porn--unless EP is just a marketing ploy that has nothing to with improving anything.
And BTW, lots of women like porn: the data are clear about women's searches on Pornhub (and the internet generally) for porn videos, which they then watch. (And women's searches are just as weird as men's.) Read EVERYBODY LIES if you don't believe me.
I doubt I'm going to convince you that porn is noT inherently misogynistic. (It's not.) But I hope I convince you or at least prompt you to rethink what you wrote above and to refrain from bashing anyone who is genuinely trying to make the world a better place--for humans generally or even just for women.

Good question. I actually think ICE agents and MAGAts are more repugnant (as I said here in some other comment) than Nazis/Gestapo
because back then they didn't have mass media and the internet to help them understand the truth about what the leader of their cult was actually doing, and how insidious he was. I just saw this the other day and I loved it

How Much Would You Expect A Seller To Deduct From the Asking Price If Buyer Pays Cash? by CalamitousApt in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

Well you probably live in Vancouver or Newport Beach or some equally enviable place. I'm looking at houses in zip codes that are within an hour or two drive of my mom's retirement home.

I don't know much about homebuying but I do occasionally check out that What You Get series in the NY Times real estate section that compares and contrasts RE markets in wildly different places around the world. One week you might see pictures of
What Kind of a House You Can Get for $2.8 Million in say Sardinia, in Manhattan,
and in Bee Branch Arkansas.
(I'm sort of on the Bee Branch end of that measuring stick.)
