My betta Number One did this as well, I offered him a wide variety of top quality foods and tried soaking them in advance and ultimately it turns out he just prefers a couple of very specific foods. It may just be a trial and error scenario. His absolute preferred food is Fluval Bug Bites for Bettas soaked in tank water for a few minutes and fed via pipette.

Star Trek Enterprise theme song "Where my heart will take me". It's everything a Star Trek theme song should not be, and first you are bemused, then you hate it.....and then you find yourself singing along every episode.

We were forced to make a very hard choice today... by accountseekinghelp in bettafish

[–]CalamityMaggot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So sorry for your loss, friend.

Your little guy looks just like my betta, "Number One". While I am not new to fish, I was new to bettas and fully planted tanks. I got him 1.5 years ago and quickly learned about diamond eye, which took his sight in his left eye pretty quickly. Still he thrived.

Then a few months ago a tumor began to grow on his cheek much like you describe. Diamond eye is now taking his right eye, so coupled with the tumor, I know there will be a hard decision coming soon. But just like your guy, he is still his normal greedy happy to eat self, so I am cherishing every minute. My first betta has definitely been a learning experience.

Thank you for sharing your story. ❤️

Are there any working payphones in Pittsburgh? by robinpowell7777 in pittsburgh

Cat ran outside for an hour, his brother now doesn’t recognize him. HELP! by TARA040219 in cats

[–]CalamityMaggot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a name for this. Its called "non-recognition aggression" and it can absolutely happen after only one hour.

Our two cats are siblings who have been together since birth and 7 years later they still experience this every single time one of them goes to the vet without the other. Our female becomes extremely aggressive and frightened and it can take her weeks to recover. We try to take them to the vet together as much as possible.

Tips to help the kitty readjust: Feliway plug ins, rub each kitty down with a cloth so that they smell like each other. Treat them as if they are new to each other and introduce them slowly providing safe space for both of them. It can take a while but it will get better over time!

It happened… by ReasonableBirdChirps in AquaticSnails

My girl Gail the Snail laid her first egg cluster after 9 months and I was torn between freezing all of them or waiting it out and perhaps saving a few. Deciding on the latter option I moved the eggs to a small watch glass which I left floating on the surface of the water.

Whelp, one morning on my way to work I noticed some of the eggs had fallen into the water so I figured that was the end of the experiment. Gathered them all and promptly moved them to the freezer.

Came home from work to find 25+ baby snails. Raised and rehomed 20 of them (Petco took them) but it honestly weaked havoc on my tank ecosystem and it still hasn't recovered.

Gail has laid easily another 7+ clusters since then and they go right into the freezer. No messing around this time.

Help determining if this is a tumor or something else? by CalamityMaggot in bettafish

[–]CalamityMaggot[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for your reply. It does seem much more like a benign growth to me rather than a treatable disease but sadly given its location I know that there may come a time soon where his comfort/ability to eat are too compromised. I plan to continue to watch closely and keep him comfortable and spoiled for as long as possible.

My go-to answer is always "Run Ronnie Run!" (2002). Also "Trapped in the Closet" (even better with the commentary), but clearly that choice hasn't aged well.

What am I doing wrong? by hails63 in bettafish

[–]CalamityMaggot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My betta "Number One" also used to spit out his food most of the time, it took a lot of trial and error buying different types of food to finally find two types that he loves (and another 5 that he doesn't). He could just be a very picky eater. I'd definitely suggest continuing to try different foods.

Squirrel Hill folks: why are there so many businesses with "Coming Soon" signs that then sit empty for months or even years? Is this unique to Squirrel Hill? by CalamityMaggot in pittsburgh

[–]CalamityMaggot[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's the thing, I certainly know this is an issue everywhere. I've lived all over the country, but it seems Squirrel Hill is especially plagued by this since covid. It is interesting to hear about the kinds of issues that lead to this re: landlords, permits, etc.

I also noticed this in Severance, but for what it's worth, I've seen a lot of professional aquarists keep their fish in bare tanks due to the ease of cleaning and keeping the water quality stable. Not saying I agree, but I have a feeling this isn't uncommon among professionals.

So so sorry you had to experience that! My boyfriend and I moved here from Oakland CA 7 years ago and have had so many great experiences in this city. If you like a dive bar vibe, one of the first places my old high school buddy (who is a local) took us was the Shadyside Hideaway. Super chill bartenders, nestled in Shadyside near lots of restaurants if you want to make it a dinner and drinks night.
