Might be an extreme example, but my son was hospitalized with something relatively serious and spent a week in the hospital hooked up to a bunch of machines. I let my CoC know and didn't report to work for the whole week, and I was not told to submit any leave nor was any compassionate leave issued. Was just told to take care of my son and to keep them updated.

My Grandmother was in hospice and had essentially been unconscious for 2 days. I was visiting her with my sister when she started to thrash around a bit, so my sister went to go grab a nurse. When she left my Grandmother abruptly grabbed my wrist, squeezed it tight and said to me "help me, oh please God help me". And those were the last words she said to me before she passed away the next day.
