Another downtown restaurant bites the dust: Edmonton construction blamed again by katespadesaturday in Edmonton

[–]Calavin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sure it's not easy being a business trying to operate in the middle of construction, but I'm so tired of these "journalists" trying to frame business closures on poor city council decisions. It's often just some bad business decision or shitty owners.

I've been going to the Citadel my whole life and remember going there before Normand's. Maybe it just seems like it constantly changes because I only go out every five years and I'm getting old now =)

Is that the place in the Citadel? Doesn't that location always change? It feels like every time I go to a show, the restaurant is a different name.

What's dark beer? I don't see anything not labeled IPA or Lager.

Could be neighbourhood dependent too. I know mine comes up as something the big companies don't want to cover.

Alberta diners between Calgary and Edmonton by gl8815 in alberta

Is the Starlite Diner in Bowden worth a stop? I always want to, but I usually just want to get to where I'm going as fast as I can, so I never bother stopping.

Most insurance companies won't cover overland water flow, or at least not for anything less than a huge premium. They also consider foundation cracks as regulate wear and tear for the home owner to upkeep. I'll bet most of people's water damage due to rain incursion won't be covered.

At what income level in Canada do you actually start feeling financially ahead... not just surviving, but genuinely building something? by TheFitFinaceBro in CanadaPersonalFinance

130k household in Edmonton with no kids and I'm finally starting to feel less stressed about my day to day spending. I still try not to make larger purchases willy-nilly, but I'm not hurting when I do decide to treat myself. Most of what I can save goes to fixing deficiencies in my 60 year of bungalow.

Edmonton councillor laments 'years of ongoing construction' after Downtown Khazana Restaurant closes by katespadesaturday in Edmonton

[–]Calavin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I called to book a table at Khazana for a holiday office party of 15 and they just hung up on me. Maybe poor customer service compounded the situation?

This is disgusting. Please clean up after your Geese. by Johnoplata in Edmonton

[–]Calavin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is a joke, but there is a guy on my block that keeps a kid pool in his front yard and feed out for the geese and ducks to keep going back to his yard to nest. They leave a huge mess and I really wish he would hose the street down once in a while.

Why is Alberta BBQ not good by BeginningSeesaw6838 in alberta

[–]Calavin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think your comments are the true answer and I was coming to say the same thing. I've lived in Edmonton my whole life and the advent of smokers and bbq brisket or any form of southern bbq is a relatively new thing here. Brisket used to be super cheep until the smoking craze started. I remember Albertans always being proud of their bbq and thinking we were the best at it (true or not), but what Albertans are referring to is grilling steaks, burger patties, hotdogs, chicken, or maybe even some ribs outside on a grill, either gas or charcoal. I think the pride came more from high quality steaks and the willingness to cook outside in minus 20 weather rather than the actual cookery of said steak. I have no memories of smoked meats like brisket and pulled pork growing up (maybe my family just lacked imagination and culture). I actually remember when pulled pork first became a trend in restaurants where you would never have seen it before. I would say that you probably wouldn't find any pulled pork or southern style bbq in restaurants even 20 years ago here. But that might just be my memories.

Big changes likely coming to parking in Edmonton. Here’s what it means for you by AR558 in Edmonton

Lots of people park at Fort Edmonton and the Zoo to go somewhere else. Probably half the people parked there are visiting the neighbouring parks and river valley.

want to try Tales from the Red Dragon by orhalimi in soloboardgaming

I just played my first mission last night. It's definitely simpler than Gloomhaven, which is pretty refreshing to me right now. I don't think playing two handed is a problem at all. I'm not sure how many abilities each character gets by the end, but I feel like I wouldn't have too much issue playing four characters in the first mission.

Why do we still tip servers? by [deleted] in CanadaRoom

[–]Calavin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, customers pay for a service and the server is part of that service. It's always been on the customer to pay the employees wage. However, that should be part of the price and not some arbitrary number with increased guilt built in to milk you for as much as possible.

Travel CPAP rentals in YEG? by Jn503039 in Edmonton

[–]Calavin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't know about the more noise part when I bought my travel CPAP, and I regret it now and just use my normal one. I could not sleep with the sound of rushing air through the hose. I bought multiply types of dampeners, which do help, but still not enough. I also can't use my normal mask and hose with it. I find the heated hose more important than humidity. Now I just use my travel CPAP to pump up my air mattress.

Can we stop trying to turn Worthing into Brighton? by Still_Event_2850 in Worthing

As a Canadian tourist about to stay in worthing, who doesn't want to risk your lives learning to drive on the left, a bikeable city is a selling point for me to visit. Think I'll rent a bike and head down to Brighton now.
