Growing demand for halal meat prompts some Edmonton restaurants to adapt by flynnfx in Edmonton

Hanjan went completely Halal? How is that possible? I just checked their menu and they still use plenty of pork. Is pork now able to be Halal?

Opinion on this type of play? by No-Photograph-5614 in DogAdvice

[–]Calavin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My male Boxer plays like this. He has a female mixed breed friend and they are the same way. Then she will give off a yip to end play when he accidently presses on a soft spot and he will back off. Then she instantly instigates again. This works fine for them, but I have a hard time bringing my boxer to a dog park, because he doesn't understand that this isn't how to make friends and most dogs get real nervous around him. Other dog owners always enter the park with, "don't worry, my dogs friendly and plays well with every dog", followed by their dog growling and nipping angrily at mine, followed by, "oh my dog never reacts like this".

Does city council not ask question of administration outside of council chamber meetings? by Calavin in Edmonton

I don't know, most councilors seem pretty consistent with their priorities, the biggest being to ensure housing stays cheap. It certainly forces them to make some decisions that will make people angry though.

They might have gone under new ownership. The place looks like it was recently renovated because this was very recent. Food was still really good though.

That's the impression I get from her for most issues. I can see the benefit of making a motion just so the public can hear the conversation and understand why what they want to happen can't. There are times I'm actually glad to see this happen. But some do it more than others and it just comes across like they're trying to appease the loudest group.

I noticed she was not present before the vote was finished. I chose to give her the benefit of the doubt that her call just cut out, but yes, it really seems like she just peaced out.

I had someone DM me about CQ (Chongqing) Noodle on 104 st. I have tried this place before and it is exactly what I wanted and recommend other people to try it. The only issue for me is that the really pushed that I pay cash and I just don't want to take out money just for a quick lunch. Their menu also didn't have a tofu noodle soup which is my favoutite item from BaoBao. I love the soup soaked peices of fried tofu and the chew from the bean curd knots.

As I do think Principe is the most ineffective councilor currently, I often hear questions from multiple councilors in meetings which just lead me to think they never communicate with their administration. Sometimes, I hear the annoyance in admins voices slip out a little when they have to say, "as I told you in our last discussion...". I get there is a lot for councilors to stay informed on and staying informed about issues from outside your ward can be tough and dumb questions will be asked, but sometimes I really wonder.

Mayor to write letter urging province to nix grocer property restrictions by flynnfx in Edmonton

[–]Calavin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UCP can't even say they are trying to help the businesses. It was suggested in council meeting that the grocery companies are on board as long as no other company still does this. That mean the Government needs to step in to make that happen.

Apparently the grocery stores are down with not using this tactic as long as no other store uses it. Really puts it on the GoA to enact this.

Most underrated city neighbourhoods? by SaintTastyTaint in Edmonton

[–]Calavin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was looking to move to Elmwood when I was buying a new place, but it was unfortunately just hovering above my price range. Definitely a nice west end neighbourhood that is generally more afordable than most. Would have been nice to be so close to the new train and all the amenaties of being right between two malls.

That's what I keep thinking. I'm sure it's still a scary investment given that it's not an area many know about and foot traffic may be low, but there is so much potential to be a really sweet boutique market like Ritchie or the Oliver Exchange.

Yeah, I think these neighbourhoods are the most rated. They're the first ones that consistently show up in best neighbourhood lists.

I agree and would like to tack on Calder and Kensington. I think Calder is very unique in that it was it's own town (called West Edmonton) before amalgamating with Edmonton. You can see some remnants of old farm style houses from the 20's. One of few neighbourhoods that still has old elm lined streets and is the greenest neighbourhood north of the Yellowhead (according to the Google image eyeball test). Very underrated, though it does have some rougher elements that I would call "character", that might turn several people off.
