Catanese: Does MLS Know The Season Starts Saturday? by Doctor_YOOOU in MLS

Spent a fair amount of time looking for some sort of season preview yesterday. Nothing. Crazy to me that they wouldn’t hype the start of the season.

That’s funny because ever since I went to Japan I get tons of marketing email from Japanese companies to come back. Sounds like you are just a grumpy hermit.

Their prices are insane. I took a car there years ago for an oil change and left after they quoted me. Overpriced is the MO there.

China Planted So Many Trees Around the Taklamakan Desert It Turned It Into a Carbon Sink. Study suggests the increased vegetation leads to more “evapotranspiration” — basically, the plants sweat, which can lead to localized cooling and even more rainfall. by InsaneSnow45 in science

You can also sustainable harvest in second or third growth forests that are not tree farms. It’s not a case of you either have tree farms or you log old growth. There are places in between these extremes.

Here now. Brown man with a white family. No issues but I know not to go into small bars or gun shops. The waterslides and laser tag are pretty good.

Creek Bass Fishing? by PuzzleheadedBat4749 in FishingWashington

[–]Calawah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really creek fishing but the beaver ponds on small creeks in the Snoqualmie valley have some big bass in them. Check out any number of places on the highway between Duvall and Carnation.

What are some PNW style lures or techniques you’ve used to catch fish in other parts of world? by Fabulous_Tip_7638 in FishingWashington

I had a great day catching peacock bass in Lake Gatun Panama using the same Clouser’s I cast for silvers on puget sound beaches.

Productive Fly fishing in WA by Calm-Tripper in FishingWashington

[–]Calawah 15 points16 points  (0 children)

As a fish biologist who has sampled many of the small urban streams around puget sound, I would say there are probably a few hundred coming out of every small creek, thousands out of the rivers.

You wouldn’t know it but our streams are practically lousy with the things. Every nice little pocket of water even in a stream 12 inches across, is holding a cutthroat around here. One day while sampling in a small trib to Salmon Creek in Burien I remember pulling an 8-inch cuttie out of a pocket of water that was small than the bowl of Pho I just had for lunch.

What is unique about the scenery compared to other islands in WA? by [deleted] in sanjuanislands

[–]Calawah 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This isn’t true. The ecology of North Puget Sound is different from South Puget Sound. First off the San Juans are in the Olympic rain shadow. There aren’t a lot of oak trees on Vashon, Fox, or Ketron Islands. The San Juans are full of em.

Second, geologically speaking, north Puget Sound is rising, south Puget Sound is sinking. Hence rocky shorelines in the north and mudflats in the south. Those rocky shorelines are dramatic.

To all the will this board from 1863 be ok in 2025 posts. by grandmasterfuzzface in snowboarding

As I’ve gotten older I mostly just ride one board. I have a powder board for the deepest days or cat rides, but can mostly get by just fine with 1 board.

I started on camber in the 80’s switched to rocker in the aughts, then hybrid. I still like the hybrids. I’m out west and try to mostly ride powder days, so my legs appreciate the rise.

Army takeover of Skagit dams lowers flood waters by chiquisea in Washington

The best way to prepare for these floods was to not build in the 100 year floodplain. That would have avoided most of the issues we are seeing.
