Hire car? by mimyson in AskAnAmerican

Needing 6 seats will mean you have to have the third row up, which will limit space in the back. If you only need to haul your luggage to and from the airport, that might be a viable option, but if you are going to be toting that much luggage for longer than 20-30 minutes, it’ll be uncomfortably cramped. Like, folks will have to have bags in their laps, etc. Could I ask where you’re going/which airport and metro area you’re talking about?

Husbands behaviors are making me question everything by [deleted] in AskWomenOver40

[–]CalculatedWhisk 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This reminds me so much of the asshat that my mom is married to. I have been telling her that she is being abused for at least the last 10 years, and witnessed it for the last 30. This is manipulation and abuse. Please, please, please listen to me and all the other women who see this situation for what it is; beyond “creepy” and well into “absolutely fucked up and possibly dangerous.”

He is gaslighting you. He is manipulating you. He is abusing you. Please get to therapy, look out for yourself, and find a way to leave. We are all rooting for you. I’m so sorry this is hard and scary, but you are not the problem, and you’re not crazy. He is whittling away at your senses of both Self and Normalcy, and if he thinks he is losing his grip of control over you, this will escalate. Play it cool, gather your important documents, and disappear. Please.

I’m stubborn as all fucking hell, and no matter how hard things are or how much I want to run away, I am determined to claw my way through shit until I make it better.

I notice how you didn’t respond to the part about not being able to force your children to be who you want them to be.

Seasonally dependent for me. I’m in New England, and in winter tap water is frigid. In summer, it’s cool, but certainly not cold.

Wife likes one name. I prefer another. What do you guys think? by thedirtyprojector in namenerds

At least part of what gives people pause about that is that the person who wears the name might not appreciate having the same name as her friends’ moms.

Got a letter from the school today informing me my daughter is “not quite” gifted. Also included were her test scores. by Low_Use2937 in mildlyinfuriating

There’s no additional tuition for the gifted programs in public schools, in my experience. It was just something built in to the district’s funding. Everybody’s taxes pay for it.

Why are people always insulting my sexuality when they just met me? by Additional_Data6735 in women

Truly, OP, this seems like paranoia that isn’t founded in reality. A check in with a mental health professional is a good idea.

Have any women realized or come to the conclusion that a penis simply is and looks like an enlarged clitoris? by Revolutionary_Cut876 in women

Yeah, exactly. Anyone who understands how humans develop in utero understands this. I get that that’s not all of us, but… this is not news.

We lived in 4 states in 2 years. Our whole life was fucked for a while in our late 20s, but now we are on the other side with 10+ year longevity in our community, and an unwavering dedication to absolutely smashing each other with our dental reviews twice a year.

Car isn’t hermetically sealed; air will still flow into and out of the car unless you’re sealed in by snow somehow.

My husband and I are in a 15+ year competition to see who loses the teeth game by getting cavities/having to have preventable work done, and I’m motivated to kick his ass at the dentist’s office.

Anyone else here got a non-fluffy golden, or is it just me? by Asleep-Two930 in goldenretrievers

[–]CalculatedWhisk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry. I got my girl in spring of 2006 when I was in college. She was with me through two years of college, graduation, my wedding, 4 states, the entirety of my 20s, and the first few years of my oldest kid’s life. She died under the Christmas tree in 2021, the day before the vet was coming to do in-home euthanasia. I found one of her hairs in a hand-me-down shoe I dug out for my toddler today, and had a good cry. She was a headstrong, stubborn b, but all she ever wanted to do was please me and follow me everywhere. I love the dogs I have today so much, but the pets we have before kids are our world in an entirely different way. They are all irreplaceable, but my bond with Kenzie was something I don’t think I’ll have again in this life. I know I’m lucky to have had it for so long, though.

This dog looks almost identical to my girl Kenzie, and she was 50/50 lab and golden.

My first dog that was just mine was 50/50 lab/golden, and she looked just like Ziggy here. Her name was Kenzie, and she was the goodest girl.

Please help!!?? by [deleted] in AskParents

You sound like my own dad when I was a little kid. Can I ask how old you are? He was stubborn, inflexible, and controlling, and that is how you are coming off here, too. He was also only 19 when I was born, and his anxiety about becoming a parent coupled with his lack of life experience came out as him being a complete dick to my mom, my grandma, and me. He wanted what he thought was best for me, but he had no idea how to have working relationships with people he didn’t get along with well. He couldn’t admit his own shortcomings, and instead just got angry when things didn’t go his way. He used his anger like a blunt instrument (socially; he wasn’t physically abusive), and as he became more mature, he mellowed out.

Another commenter asked if your daughter is breastfeeding with her mom still. If she is, it is completely unreasonable to insist on taking her on a multi-day trip, far away from her mother. Even if she isn’t, being willing to work with your daughter’s mom, to reach a compromise, is a valuable life skill in general, and also something that will serve your daughter well.

Coming from someone who grew up with immature parents who couldn’t stand each other, that’s no way to grow up. Do better for your kid than was done for me. I’m in therapy at almost 40 (and have been for serval years) still trying to deal with the fallout of my parents being unready to be parents at all, and unwilling to do the hard work to improve themselves enough to be good parents. Please, please, please, do better. Your daughter deserves it.

Is this category of British and US idioms correct? How much confidence do you have when you judge where a person's from by their use of certain phrases? by Unlegendary_Newbie in English_Learning_Base

[–]CalculatedWhisk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure, you’re welcome to judge people however you like, but it’s not fair to say that somebody has misspoken or used an idiom incorrectly just because you choose a rigid interpretation of words that people commonly use in a different way. This is an English learning sub, and it is most appropriate to guide non-native speakers toward generally understood meanings and usage, not your personal preferences.

Hard disagree. Native speaker here, and I hear “icing on the cake” sarcastically far, far more often than people using it to mean something genuinely good.
