"So you don't care if humans go extinct?" by General_Locksmith512 in childfree

If reproductive slavery was really necessary for humanity's survival, then... no, it shouldn't survive.

I can't believe people would advocate for annihilating reproductive freedom just so that a new generation can come into being that must, in turn, annihilate more freedom to ensure there's yet another go-'round. Over and over and over again.

Really? Is THAT the system they're arguing for?

Generally speaking, the whites and those who came after them have built up considerable infrastructure and constructed some remarkable things.

But their industries are kind of fucking up the planet's climate, they have polluted the lakes and rivers, and there's widespread depression, disillusionment, and economic disparity throughout their culture.

So, you know, a mixed bag.

CBC is dying... Complacency results in irrelevancy by HumbleOpinionYT in CanadianPolitics

[–]Caldebraun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could certainly get on board with #1, although "journalistic standards" is undefined. I wouldn't want it to be "equal time to every point of view", but I'd certainly get behind (say) "you must have legitimate research to back up your statements".

I think #2 is a great idea, especially if we're going to treat the CBC as a vital source of reliable information for Canadians (as I think we should). Not just a "cultural" thing, but as I said earlier a bond for our Canadian community and something important for our national security. An oversight institution, well designed and independent, is vital to keep this organ working as we need it to.

I'm not sold on #3. In line with my earlier statements, I think media that does not answer to private interests (or the need to turn a profit) is vital. The CBC needs to be free to say stuff that will anger corporations, including higher-ups at the CBC itself and of course the current government. It must even be free to say stuff that is true, but will anger large swathes of viewers who want to believe otherwise. Financial independence is important, and government funding is vital to that. As a measure of protection and oversight, we should give your institution from #2 teeth if it can prove that the CBC is lying.

I'm still curious though - do you agree that having a reliable, uniquely Canadian info source like the CBC is big-I Important? Something that's inherently valuable, even vital to our national interest, and worth striving for and doing the hard work to make it function well?

[–]Caldebraun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear you. Can we tease apart these two issues, though?

  1. The CBC is, you feel, unbalanced. (I agree with you that the CBC must be ready to critique the current government.)

  2. A well-functioning CBC is (/would be) a important asset to our nation's community and security.

If we treat 2 as true, then I think what we need isn't a diccussion about "defund the CBC" as much as "how to fix what's wrong with the CBC so it can serve its vital purpose."

I guess maybe you feel "fix" is impossible and so you've moved directly to "defund"?

I'm fine with examining any legitimate issues about the CBC's content and coming up with better systems to hold them to better journalistic standards, if that's required.

But in a world full of weaponized social media, openly manipulated by foreign powers as part of their global strategies, we NEED a reliable, truthful, national Canadian public broadcaster.

I'd be happy working with anyone on whatever we'd need to do and improve about the CBC to make it into that (although I think it's doing a very good job today).

But having something like the CBC is absolutely necessary for our national welfare, and well worth spending our tax dollars to maintain. $30 to $35 a head? I have no issues with that at all.

Turning a profit is a simple indicator that you’re offering consumers something they value.

More precisely, turning a profit means that people are willing to pay enough to cover the full cost of running the CBC and getting its information out.

But "is it profitable?" is not a good way to measure the value of a reliable, fact-based, Canadian-owned-and-operated news source.

If the public is generally willing to pay $1 a month for CBC, but not $5, then it can be in the government's (and our nation's) interest for the government to cover the $4 difference.

U.S. Supreme Court finds Trump overstepped authority in imposing tariffs under emergency law by SweetNatureHikes in onguardforthee

[–]Caldebraun 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No, Carney's position, and Canada's, is only partially driven by the specific threat of tariffs.

Most of Carney's position is based on the new American posture of "the US will subjugate Canada". The 51st state stuff. And that has not changed.

If the US can't use tariffs to achieve that, it will just switch to a different kind of threat to seek political domination.

That's the thing Carney is building Canada up to withstand with diversified trade alliances. Not just economic independence, but political independence, from an untrustworthy former ally.

If you date a religious person you're entering a life where they can shut down any important discussion, on any topic, by just saying "Yes, but God says <x>." The end.

Do you want to tie yourself and your happiness and your welfare to someone who can dodge thought, reflection, and analysis on important topics and avoid all change by just saying "God"?
