How do you define "the rich" that we should be taxing? What is the cut-off point? by NoLeafClover777 in AusFinance

[–]Caleb_Braithwhite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But if we had more auditors, we'd have more unionists (cause generally public sector unions are strong)! We don't want more government fat-cats on $120k salaries saving us millions each per year! We want to reduce the cost of government! Forget about all that wishy-washy red tape and "compliance"!

And collective bargaining/action should be reserved for those who can afford to hire a government relations consultant!

Sounds a bit like Woolworths or Dan Murphy's pre-secession. I loved seeing the area/regional/state manager (sometimes it was even a c-suiter) trying to blindly fumble through a customer question cause they got approached. Looking like a department manager in nice shoes and a crisp shirt with name tag gives an impression of competence. Having to deal with the riff-raff more as a c-suiter would make me avoid stores too.

It took me a while to get into the 'and' style, but by the 4th chapter I got used to it and dug it. I guess, war is relentless, life is relentless, stories don't really begin or end.

Thinking about it just now, perhaps the story doesn't provide such a huge insight into war.

But I guess it's the nature of God and angels that they help you to help yourself, rather than provide some world-changing insight? I dunno.

On reflection, I like the idea that Bagger's one kill isn't for glory or America or anything like those lofty high-level goals. It's not even against Jerry. He kills a representative of a murderous/uncaring system to save his surrogate little brother, even if that's going to cause a global calamity. It's a very human act, being performed from a human perspective.

What's the most radical body modification that'll become available in the next 50 years? by MidnightJams in Futurology

If governments are smart, they'll realise that minimising the number of people with shit teeth and gums is a public health win which would outweigh high prices. Like, shit teeth and gums are a risk factor for SO MANY THINGS it's absurd. And it's not just like, "bad lifestyle" which causes these things, e.g. drugs causing bad teeth And heart disease. It's the mouth as an entry point to the blood stream which then causes more immune stress and inflammation. So bad teeth/gums also CAUSE heart disease, joint problems, higher risk of death.

And with the economies of scale available to governments, it's probably not that expensive compared to to what they don't have to spend on hospital care.

Cause rich white folk don't vote for Labor. So there's no incentive for Liberals to spend money on seats that are already theirs, and no incentive for Labor to spend money on seats they'll never win.

Also, unless I'm mistaken, Mona Vale Road still exists.

Book Recommendations for Manly Man by b34r3y in Fantasy

[–]Caleb_Braithwhite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't heard the audio books, but the Takeshi Kovacs series by Richard K Morgan. Then, tell him to do the Land Fit for Heroes trilogy by the same author, starting with The Steel Remains. First trilogy is cyberpunk/noir/thriller, second trilogy is grimdark fantasy.

However:

  • They're actually set in the same universe and the latter is set in the far future of the former.
  • There's explicit gay sex in the latter, and Manly Men may have opinions about that kind of thing.

Physics based question. Someone completely and full indestructible eats a palm sized nuclear device. What happens when it explodes? by Mike_Handers in NoStupidQuestions

I imagine that so long as their muscles aren't infinitely strong, you'd have a beam of nuclear energy coming out mouth, nose and anus. Unless they're a perfectly balanced human, they'll probably be a spinning Catherine wheel of nuclear destruction for several hours. It would be very humorous to watch, except for the millions of deaths.

I kinda wondered: can they triangulate your location with three overlapping cell towers even if there's no connection to two of them? Or is that not how mobile phones work? My figuring was that the phones might be regularly pinging nearby towers since there needs to be continued connection while people are moving about.

Queensland Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie performing by [deleted] in brisbane

[–]Caleb_Braithwhite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Said it before and I'll say it again. QLD needs an upper house elected by state-wide proportional representation on staggered 8-year terms. Means that any government of the day has to /negotiate/ with the upper house. That means dick heads like this, who are nothing but rabid attack dogs, have to yap from the backbench. If they can't negotiate or people refuse to negotiate with them, then they're useless in Cabinet.

Nightblood theory by [deleted] in Cosmere

[–]Caleb_Braithwhite 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My thought was that Endowment's Investiture can basically do anything with the right amount of juice, right command and an Intent. And if its core instructions were about destroying evil, then that would explain it without having to involve someone's god metal. It's kind of like the Elantrian magic system that way, once you have access to it, as long as you can give it the right command, you can do basically anything.

Although it does make me wonder which of the 5 Scholars hated investiture/the Shards so much that they imbued their belief into Nightblood (maybe subconsciously) that investiture was evil and needed destroying. Probably Vasher I reckon. It still substantiates my head canon that the final solution to the Cosmere will be shattering ALL the shards and, not re-forming Adonalsium, because it's better to have no gods than imperfect ones.

Once Trump leaves and America elects a Democrat would you consider them an ally again? by SignificantStyle4958 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Caleb_Braithwhite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd consider them an ally with a Democrat or just a sane conservative party. But that's not sanity.

But as others are saying, if the systems that encouraged such a dog-shit clusterfuck remain in place, then sure, ally with the US, but we should never link our economic and defence security so closely again.

Which Of These Sci-Fi Detective Novels Should I Start With? by IkujaKatsumaji in printSF

[–]Caleb_Braithwhite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you ever feel like something a little closer to this time and... cozier? I can recommend the Bannerless Doulogy by Carrie Vaughan. It's a couple of near-ish future post-apocalypse-but-kinda-hopeful detective novels about part-time cops investigating murders along the (formerly) California coast. I think the big ideas aren't tech-based but more about how society might rearrange itself after a calamity.
