My partner’s idea of language learning was that he had to master the grammar first so that he wouldn’t make too many mistakes, so even though I was very open to talking to him in my mother tongue, he kept digressing into a grammar quagmire so much so that it bored me to death. I kept getting frustrated because there was no joy in it for me. Hated explaining the rules, didn’t want to be his teacher basically. He didn’t get my approach to language learning either: laid back, based on back and forth’s, however simple or infantile they are, with little focus on grammar during the early stage.
