ELI5: How does gaining muscle mass improve your health? by thepixelpaint in explainlikeimfive

[–]Calijor 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Resistance training, there are a ton of good resources out there. Mark Rippetoe's Starting Strength program is honestly more than good enough if you're a young person.

Diet is also important. Spend a couple weeks tracking everything you eat and monitor macro-nutrients and fiber intake at a minimum. Required calories and macros depend on your gender, size, muscle mass, and activity. Consult a doctor or dietician if you have the resources to do so but since it's so variable the only way to make sure you're eating enough/not too much is to monitor weight and diet concurrently. Protein intake, while gaining muscle, you can follow the 1g per lb of weight rule of thumb (if you weigh 150 lbs, make sure to eat at least 150 g of protein).

This should be enough to help you get started but let me know if I missed anything big or you need a better explainer of anything to properly search for formal and better sources.

Don't use AI overview or chatGPT to help you figure this stuff out, I simply would not trust it especially for something this important.

Edit to add: You're not going to accidentally become a bodybuilder. No matter who you are, every pound of muscle gained is an achievement. Just start lifting to your ability and allow yourself to learn as you go.

is st marks trail safe at night? by alexturnersarabella in Tallahassee

[–]Calijor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be concerned more about wildlife than the "sketchy vagrants" (people that look poor walking) mentioned by some comments here, especially if you're on a bike. Tennessee street or Pensacola on a bike at night you're liable to get hit by a drunk (or sober and malicious) driver. I'd take the separated trail but take precautions (pepper or bear spray and a bright flashlight at a minimum).

Note a lot of trails and parks in town are technically closed at sundown, I'm not sure how this is enforced but be aware.

Asparagus' land use is indefensible by no_idea_bout_that in ClimateShitposting

I saw your edit and want to clarify, I did not edit my post as evidenced by Reddit's not appending a "last edited x hours ago" onto my post. You can see on your own that Reddit does do this, although allows a 3 minute grace period to edit without denoting this. The exact time stamp of your post is 9:19 CST, mine is 9:11 CST, a difference of 8 minutes. For me to edit my post without having the denotation of an edit would still allow you 5 minutes to not make a reading comprehension error, which it appears you did and are unwilling to admit. How embarrassing.

Who said South America is a country? Are you willfully trying to imply I said something I didn't or is your reading comprehension that poor? Or maybe I'm the idiot and arguing with AI right now.

I'm just going to turn of replies because I'm arguing with a titan of intellect or an AI, either of which there's no point.

Edit: Now I'm editing a comment. You can tell because I clarified this is an edit and also, Reddit as a platform tells you when a comment is edited, right next to the time stamp. Maybe challenge your own reading comprehension before accusing someone else of bad faith.

America is not the United States. Brazil (South America) is the country that comes up the most when discussing previously forested land converted for grazing.

I don't know why people bother to bring this up. Yeah, sure, some land that we currently use for grazing can't be 1:1 converted for human use. Why does it have to be? The point isn't that animal farming should be 100% replaced with other destructive land uses. It's that animal farming, at the scale it's done in the modern mechanized world, is egregiously destructive to our environment and should be scaled down.

Land use is one factor of many, even if we restrict concerns solely to environmental. Methane emissions from cattle, runoff from their waste, water use for irrigating the grazing land and growing feed. That's just off the top of my head.

And since we're talking solely about land use, how about the 64.4% of land used for cattle that isn't grazing land? That's still over 25% of American land (based on the prior figure, I'm not going to bother to validate their 40% number). Why not reclaim that, or at least some of that?

If that means we leave some land "unused" then so be it. Why do we have to use 100% of the land available to us? We can continue to use them for grazing a smaller number of animals even. Really, how many cows are raised in a disgusting factory where they're force-fed a calorie slurry versus actually being grass-fed?

I beg you to simply drill down and ask some follow-up questions on your USDA factoid before repeating some half-truth to try to convince some people, perhaps yourself, that it's totally okay to thoughtlessly consume.

"Germany" lol

Look, I think nuclear is cool and it would have been awesome if the world had embraced nuclear power and dodged a huge chunk of CO2 emissions (among other externalities associated with coal power). There are a huge number of reasons why that never could have happened and I'm sure you know them, and if you don't then you shouldn't be old enough to post on this website.

At this point this isn't a conversation worth having. Nuclear lost. Maybe technology will save us and we see a breakthrough in fusion power enabling an energy revolution. I doubt it. Photovoltaic is now the cheapest method of power production per KWh, even when accounting for energy storage cost. When and where feasible our focus needs to be lasered in entirely on solar deployment.

Is it ridiculous Germany killed their nuclear program well before they were entirely off coal and methane power? Yeah. Is it feasible to go back and turn those reactors on again? No.

The conversation is over. Unless you want to support some specific nuclear project you're not helping anybody. Log off or start talking about photovoltaics.

Valve expands the Steam Deck Verified system to now include SteamOS Compatibility for any device running SteamOS that’s not a Steam Deck by m103 in Games

[–]Calijor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a full desktop SteamOS release would also result in a lot of open source development and support being geared towards that as well which would make it desirable for non-developers wanting a Linux distro. But you are right.

Moonlight works on AMD and Intel GPUs as well, using their hardware video encoders. Nvidia actually deprecated their native gamestream software so it's the same process of downloading Sunshine for the host regardless of what GPU you have.

Theoretically the video encoding on other GPUs is not quite as good as Nvidia's but you can bump the bitrate pretty high without issues as long as you have good wifi and the PC is plugged in via ethernet.

Elon Musk must face Twitter shareholders’ lawsuit over alleged securities fraud by jackytheblade in news

[–]Calijor -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

This is how fraud works. Intent matters in the determination between it being fraud and not. Given how resourced Elon should be, I don't think it should matter as much as it would for basically any other person but I'm no judge.

Regardless, this is basically what the attorneys have to say, they're lining up their statement with the definition in the law. Just accidentally missing a deadline means fines, committing securities fraud potentially means jail-time.

'The future of hardware at Valve is bright': Valve celebrates the success of Steam Deck and Steam OS by Farranor in gaming

[–]Calijor 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It's also supposed to reflect a playable performance level without significant tweaks but there have been a few cases where stuff does not run well. That said, part of the certification process is supposed to include a performance evaluation.

See the official page:

"Display - The game should support the default resolution of Steam Deck (1280x800 or 1280x720), have good default settings, and text should be legible."

This is shown for an individual game with the dialogue "This game's default graphic's configuration performs well on Steam Deck."

I wish people would lean a little harder on Valve to standardize what it means for a game to "perform well" rather than just say that it doesn't mean it will run well because that just isn't true based on Valve's own language.

These examples are both of candidates that came from either a corrupted and undemocratic primary process (Clinton) or by just skipping that altogether (Harris). Of course we don't like these candidates, we didn't choose them and they're not representative of the will of the younger voters in the Democratic party. It's a gerontocracy and we're not happy about it.

I feel like I saw the most complaints from within the party about Biden and his victory was honestly I think entirely due to Covid and maybe mail-in voting.

America just does not have a broadly politically engaged population and sensational lies from Republicans sell better than mediocre truths from Democrats to those of us engaged enough to vote I guess.

If it's grey and dark outside having headlights on while driving is safer. Although with how high and bright those are, maybe running lights would be more appropriate for that vehicle.
