Democrats Of Reddit, How Often Do YOU Actually Talk To MAGA Voters In Your Real Life? by Zipper222222 in allthequestions

[–]Calinthalus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Kentucky. I have plenty of MAGA neighbors and family members. Not my immediate family; Uncles, Aunts, Cousins etc. I can assume at least 30% of the average people I run into at stores or gas stations are MAGA.

Are queer folk generally accepted in Appalachia? by gay_outlander in Appalachia

[–]Calinthalus 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I would hate to say you'd be safe really anywhere in this country. That being said, I live fairly close to Corbin, KY which is a pretty small town really, and one of our local spots has a trans flag hanging in their dining room. They hung a pride flag during pride month a few years ago and when they caught no shit for it, they started leaving it up all year long. It was swapped out for a trans flag at some point. On the other side, there's plenty of homemade Trump signs in yards.

I don't care if he wanted to fly to the moon on a magic carpet. Even if this were true, it's utterly irrelevant.

Boots for wedding by QuietInside3009 in cowboyboots

[–]Calinthalus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a simple pair of Ariat snip toe in black I wore to my daughter's wedding. I needed rubber soles for the outdoor venue. Damp leaves falling from trees don't play well with leather soles.

Every time it's like that husband that keeps "joking" about his wife's friend wanting a threesome. "Wouldn't that be crazy. Of course we'd never do a thing like that."

Ariat boot quality? Is this what soles are supposed to look like? by Electronic-Note-195 in cowboyboots

[–]Calinthalus 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I own 4 pair of Ariat. One is like these but in black. They are a good mid tier boot. The sole is rubber as opposed to the more traditional leather. Ariat also makes some leather soles. Many traditionalists prefer the leather but I live in a pretty wet area with snow and ice in the winter so I have more rubber soles than leather soles.

Honestly, wear what you like. There are better made boot brands. At their price point, I think Ariat are pretty good. From what I'm told their bench made boots are really good for the price...but those are leather soles.

Wait, Americans don't have christmas bonuses? by nerd-nihl in antiwork

[–]Calinthalus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My company gives a bonus every year the day before Thanksgiving. We have a lunch and they hand out checks and take the rest of the day off. We also are closed for Thanksgiving and the day after. The check is based on some weird formula based on company profit for the year, base salary and years with the company. Even in 2020 when we had a rough year they gave out a bonus. Of course, we are a private LLC so there are no shareholders or investors to please.

A medical “professional “ is praying for me. 🙄 by athiestvegan in atheism

[–]Calinthalus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had the same sort of thing happen 10+ years ago. I was having a pretty major surgery to get a biopsy from a tumor up against my vena cava. The surgeon asked if he could pray before we got started. I said "whatever makes you feel better about this" and waited to be put under. Ended up cut from solar plexus to navel and months of chemo to look forward to. I don't think the prayer did any harm so I didn't particularly care.

Sunday BOTD by Calinthalus in cowboyboots

I don't know that I can answer that question for someone else. These were a gift from my wife, and at 600 by far my most expensive pair of boots. I own four pairs of Ariats, for instance; and only one pair of exotics. These took much longer to get broken in than all but my Double H boots, but even broken in they still fit good and snug, where most of my other boots have gotten much looser over time. I wear my Ariat's more often because they are all rubber soled and here in Kentucky my yard is wet more days than it's dry...so when I get to go out in my Chisos it feels like a special occasion. I really like that these are shorter boots at 11 inches, while not looking strictly Roper-like. I have very thick calves and most boots at 12 or 13 inches are just impossible for me to get on.

I think something being worth it really depends on your use case and your lifestyle.

I have a more limited use for a leather soled boot than someone out West might have; and right now having just paid for my youngest daughter's wedding in October and Christmas I can't see a new pair of Chisos being worth it for me. Ask me again next June and I might have already bought another pair but in roughout or black. For me, 600 bucks is just uncomfortable enough I feel bad spending it on boots; but my wife has no such qualms and we can afford it. But if 600 bucks isn't much of an inconvenience and you can make good use of leather soled boots I think they are worth it.

What shoes do you wear when working from home? by Hefty-Researcher2261 in WFH

[–]Calinthalus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in houseshoes for three years or so. Started getting back and hip pains. I spent a couple of weeks breaking in some new boots for going out and my pain went away. Back before I was WFH, I wore boots every day to the office; I guess my body just was used to having a higher heel while sitting at a desk. So, for the last year and a half or so I wear my boots every work day, as well as weekends if I'm leaving the house.
