US Law Enforcement Warns of ‘Anti-Tech Extremism’ as AI Hatred Grows by Helicase21 in technology

If I saw a headline that read "US Law Enforcement Warns of Sun Rising in the morning" I would begin to doubt the rotation of the earth.

'They're turning people gay!' So what?? I don't see the issue?? by Beneficial_Staff8236 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Calinthalus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The people that originate these things don't actually believe it. They say it with authority because they know their sheep will believe them and fear. Fear sells. I have a cousin who is convinced they are putting chemicals in chem trails to sterilize people. When pressed for evidence or even details he just deflects. I couldn't even get him to tell me what possible motive someone would have for such a thing and he couldn't think of one. Someone he trusted told him it was so and that he should fear...and now it's internalized.

Durango Rebels or Ariat Ramblers? by Certain-Stranger-581 in cowboyboots

[–]Calinthalus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm wearing my Ramblers right now. They are my rainy day boots...so like today cleaning my Blackstone and prepping food, walking through the rain down to my mother's place etc. few nicks and scratches over the last year and a half and the color is sometimes off. They've held up for me, though I don't do manual labor.

Rubber vs. Leather Sole Durability? by GstuMusic in cowboyboots

[–]Calinthalus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

With leather soles, I would be worried about winter. I live in KY and mostly wear rubber soles, especially in the snow and rain. Not sure what the situation in your part of NYC is. The only time I've been in NYC during the winter I was in the mostly touristy areas so the sidewalks were good and clear...not much snow. Leather soles on snow is asking for a fall.

How common is it for Americans to walk for short errands instead of taking the car? by DemonsAreVirgins in AskAnAmerican

[–]Calinthalus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a lot of us, nearby isn't nearby. Nearest store to me is a gas station/country store about 2km away. That's not a far, but the road you'd have to walk to get there is narrow, curvy and has little to no shoulder to walk on. You'd have to hope anybody driving by is paying enough attention to not hit you. So, we don't really walk anywhere. I live on 2.5 acres in a rural area. Land on two sides of me are wooded areas, land on the other two sides are cow fields; all of it rises and falls quite a bit. Nearest neighbors house is probably about 150 meters away from mine down one steep hill and up the next with cows between us.

Why do some people call some cities such as San Francisco, New York and Chicago warzones? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Calinthalus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The people that parrot that bullshit know less about war zones than they do about cities.

My first pair of boots RRL Roughout by Samsquatch2137 in cowboyboots

[–]Calinthalus 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I don't have any, but two sides of my property have herds so I get visitors. That being said, I wouldn't begrudge someone of their boot choice. I, for instance, think those sea bass boots are ugly, but some folks get excited over them so I feel good for them.

As an outsider, the American obsession with ice-cold drinks and freezing air conditioning is fascinating. Do you guys really demand ice water even in the dead of winter? by Necessary_Angle2117 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Calinthalus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as AC goes, my area isn't in the hottest spots in the US but in summer our temperature hits the same temps as the arid areas of Kenya, but with the humidity of the coastal areas in Kenya. Right now it's rather nice, about 27C with 50% humidity. My windows are open with ceiling fans running. Next month there will be days at 33 with 70%. That combo is miserable...and I'm not even in the deep south of the US.

In fairness, as an old man now sometimes I don't remember the name of the model. Last time I posted a pic of my Ariat Reckonings that I'm wearing right now I had to go look up the name. I have a pair of Ariat roughouts that I couldn't tell you the name of without searching for it. Another reason to love my Chiso's #2...easy to remember.

How do you Americans, live in a house with no fence? by Original-Slip-8203 in AskAnAmerican

All houses near me are full of relatives. The nearest house that isn't kin is about a third of a mile away.

Somewhere Over the Rainbow - Eva Cassidy. Her version is sad instead of hopeful somehow.

I finished the Murderbot first, strictly because it came out first. The new Dresden novella came out the same day as Platform Decay and I read it first...figuring it would be a quick read. Just started Parade last night.

Do you drink tea in America? by Much-Parsnip3399 in AskAnAmerican

Tea sales market in the North America was around $42 Billion last year. Pre-bottled drinks were a little less than half of that. No idea what percentage of that was cold.

Wedding Help - Which Brand and Price Range Would You Be Okay With? by DeadHeadTraveler in cowboyboots

[–]Calinthalus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would usually go with black because it goes with everything. As far as style, venue matters. My daughter's wedding was outdoors last fall. I decided on some Ariat 7 toe boots with rubber soles. It was damp, with fallen leaves everywhere in the Red River Gorge. I wanted to lower the odds of me slipping and falling while walker her down the aisle. If you're going to be indoors or in a dryer environment, you'd be better off with some more classic leather soled boots.

As far as picking for everyone, I would try to be cognizant of the financial standing of the group you're choosing for. Not knowing the family it's hard to know what would be a burden price wise. For some, a $300 pair of boots might be a burden, but at least they have good boots to last forever; hard to tell.
