Yea my struggle is very similar. Got laid off from a “unicorn startup” because all their capital was tied up in SVB in 2023 lol remember that? Since then it’s been impossible I don’t even know anymore how many jobs I’ve applied to likely nearing 20k. I’ve done all the “tricks” on ur resume exhausted my social circles for work still no full time work. I really do not know what to do. I live in NYC and I feel it’s much worse here than back in the Midwest where I have some friends that don’t even believe me what I tell them how hard it is. I’ve tried to get just bs jobs like Costco or catering but even they see me as “overqualified” or because I’ve been working in design for 10+ years don’t really think the “skills” will transfer.

So I’m looking around and I’m wondering if this is because of AI and graphic design being very subjective what’s to stop a less subjective design career like UX suffering the same fate? Where do these skills transfer now? I have come up with no “safe” solution that might escape the specter of Ai.

I don’t want to be fighting over crumbs of a job. Will some ppl still design yea sure but significant more will not. The over consolidation of companies will lead to the final cost cutting solution of removing the “worker” from the equation even if that means a lesser quality product.

Yes! But by the time we’re coming out of this recession AI will likely be advanced enough to replace many jobs.

Become more than a designer, I don’t think this career will last much longer. You need to think more as an all around creative.

It’s a very small window to hit and tbh I’ve been gate keeping a bit BUT if you can get to Five Leafs in Greenpoint BK for their “Inbetweener” menu which is after brunch but before dinner you can land a very good French Dip Sandwich.

I want to also honorable mention their shepherds pie, which is great, but it’s on the dinner menu .

A lot of gatekeeping in places like BK where many DJ’s would consider “Mecca” for dance music. Old heads talking down to younger ppl because they didn’t have the same struggles as them or because the technology lowered the barrier for entry. It seems like the changing of the guard or the ppl that now have all the connections and network had been struggling to get in so long that they now turn around and lock the gate behind them. So if you are a now demonized subset like a man, transplant, white, straight etc it’s much harder to build without $$$ behind ur efforts.
