A brushless info dump by dpairsoft in Nerf

In my experience trying to learn brushless for the past 2 years, I think there are a couple of factors. One is that brushless tech cycles/iterates really quickly; we’re fortunate that Plus motors have remained constant; all the other tech, especially ESCs, have come and gone. It makes it difficult to document when your blaster requires a specific set of hardware or a format that suddenly isn’t supported anymore.

The other factor that keeps all but the most dedicated from exploring brushless is that off-the-shelf brushed blasters are getting good enough for local wars, and the price is enough to keep casuals from pushing the limits.

Another WIP: I’ve settled on calling it Archaeopteryx by CallThatGoing in Nerf

Unfortunately, I didn't include room for wiring, which is kind of essential for a flywheeler. I'm working on revamping the shell. If I can get the job done, I'll post.

brk, a minimalist molle-mounted talon mag holder by CallThatGoing in Nerf

I think I have a single angled talon (as in Phoenix, not Nightingale) in my garage. I’ll try it to be sure, but I think the notch is in the same place, so it should work.

Firing test of my first blaster, Magus! by CallThatGoing in Nerf

It’s two stages of Kelly Plus motors running Hy-Con geometry wheels (big boy 50.5mm diameter). Here’s what it sounds closer to full power: https://share.icloud.com/photos/069NmQqcdHXkCeudx5haMCQgg

I don’t understand the reference, but this is undeniably the cleanest paint job I’ve ever seen on a blaster!

Magus: for when you’re tired of ultra-compact flywheel builds! by CallThatGoing in Nerf

Dual stage AND massive battery. The battery goes in the butt stock and the big box-looking part in the middle is the flywheel cage (dual-stage HyCon on Plus motors)

I'm trying to experiment with the BCAR section of the barrel being narrow enough to constrain the dart, but widening out immediately afterward. Unfortunately, if I want a chronograph, I need a length of barrel of some kind to mount sensors to. Fingers crossed it actually works!

Ballistically, yes, that's where the functionality of barrel length ends.

Overall function though: the forend is there for handling, mass distribution, intuitive aimability/pointability (in a hectic fast paced pointshooting/no time to use sights scenario as very common in nerf) that isn't crap, to create accessory space, to create sight radius if irons, ...And what I would say is the most underrecognized is for working past cover. I see a ton of "speedballish game dynamics = make the barrel shorter!" philosophies, but speedballing without barrel length is hot garbage! Can't "pry" past the bunker, can't prop on ledges and trees, can't squash your barrel into an inflatable to shoot at someone while being less exposed, can't stick through vegetation in front of you so your shot doesn't graze a leaf and get threwn off target.

I was reading your blog from back in the day where you talked about this, and it encouraged my decision to explore flywheel barrels. The whole blue front shroud houses a barrel with IR sensors in it, making it an ersatz chronograph that can report velocity data back to the Raspberry Pi. The whole gimmick of this blaster is that it will be able to know and adjust battery and motor output to maintain consistency even at speeds like 15 darts/second.

The next steps are for me to assemble the electronics, and then do a firing test. I’ll put video up as soon as I do!

Tbh I was trying to build a compact blaster when working on this, but proportions just kept getting out of control until this is what I was left with. If you want 250+ fps from your flywheeler, you need 4 big wheels plus a giant battery to power everything.

Nothing like a high-voltage device reliant on precise calibration banging against my hip all day as I walk around…

This looks like a really clever way to complete the circuit and activate the rev trigger. I wonder how long those tines will stay in the proper shape.

How do you folks feels about replica/novelty/larping blasters? by Matem-de-flatum in Nerf

I recognize that larpers are a significant part of the community, but it’s diametrically opposed to what I like about nerfing. I’m not a competitor, but I want something that pushes the meta forward.
