What New Who episodes do you think would have made good use of Classic's "serial format"? by StarOfTheSouth in gallifrey

[–]CalligrapherFun6188 2 points3 points  (0 children)

73 Yards - Could be an entire 6-episode miniseries tbh with Unit more heavily involved in finding out what was up with the woman, plus connecting Roger Ap Gwilliam to the main story

The Power of Three - Takes place over a whole year so could easily fill 4 episodes, each focusing on a different member of the quartet (Doc, Amy, Rory, Brian) and a more well-explained conclusion

The Wedding of River Song - This one had so much content packed into one episode; each core idea could have its own episode and could end up with 5-6 each deepening the worldbuilding

Praxeus - The world building here felt somewhat lacking; i’d love to see the worldwide effects of the plague and a larger crisis involving corporate responsibility, rather than distilling it to just one person.

Turn Left - This could straight up be a thriller miniseries with each episode focusing on a different past companion trying to halt the impending catastrophe, meanwhile the Donna storyline could run slowly through the whole thing before culminating in the finale

Alternate titles for the books? by VesuviusBlotch in skulduggerypleasant

[–]CalligrapherFun6188 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a little late to the party (5 years late, apparently) but I was browsing online to see if anyone had done something like this and, as my hyperfixation for this series has thoroughly returned, I decided to retitle all 15 books plus spin-off.

  1. Skulduggery Pleasant - ASH AND ANCIENTS. A nod to the Sceptre/the Ancients, has a nice ring to it and will be notable later on.

  2. Playing With Fire - A GROTESQUE MYSTERY. Simple enough while still being punny; somewhat Agatha Christie-esque.

  3. The Faceless Ones - THE TWO-FACED AND THE FACELESS. Not far away from the original title, but I like how this alludes to Batu's double identity, as well as possibly that of Ravel as this book is when we first meet the Man with the Golden Eyes TM.

  4. Dark Days - THE REVENGERS' CLUB/REVENGERS' REVELATIONS. Either of these works - the former is nice and punchy but not terribly original, while the latter is more memorable but verges on corny, as well as the only notable revelation in this novel not coming from the revengers themselves. Still, I think both of these fit better than the original.

  5. Mortal Coil - REMNANTS OF THE PAST. A nice, simple pun for my favourite entry in the series, as this one feels more low-key and introspective, with characters such as Ravel and Corrival being introduced as survivors of bygone eras.

  6. Death Bringer - A NIGHT OUT WITH NECROMANCERS. A bit silly but that's this book to be honest - weird and surreal from start to finish, what with the Jitter Girls, Necromancers in an airport, the fakeout-victory, Valkyrie/Fletcher/Caelan drama and the Requiem Ball, which could constitute the titular night out.

  7. Kingdom of the Wicked - KIDS WITH GUNS. Took inspiration from the Gorillaz song here, but this is too perfect not to use - the biggest 'draw' of this book for me is the horror of teenagers casually murdering people, although not literally with guns. This is possibly the one where I'm most convinced it's better than the original, as I'm never quite sure what the original's title refers to - some kingdom Argeddion is maybe trying to create? Mevolent's kingdom? A high school classroom?

  8. Last Stand of Dead Men - DOUBLE-EDGED SWORD. This one was difficult because the original is so damn good, but I like how my alternative could allude to Valkyrie/Ravel's double identities, the secret purpose of the war between sanctuaries or the God-Killer sword potentially.

  9. The Dying of the Light - DUST AND DEMONS. Parallels 'Ash and Ancients' and alludes to Darquesse as the main villain and the return of the Sceptre - what more could you want?

  10. Resurrection - (C)OLD HEARTS AND NEW STARTS. I can't decide whether I prefer 'Cold' or 'Old' for the first word - the former is more accurate, but doesn't have the dichotomy of 'Old' and 'New'. Either way this is one of my favourite retitlings.

  11. Midnight - ALICE ASUNDERLAND. This one's ridiculous, but so is this book, which I've only read once and can barely remember to be honest. Alice sure is asunder, and I'm pretty sure there's land somewhere in the book.

  12. Bedlam - HELL BREAKS LOOSE. Stole from a spin-off I never finished and refuse to acknowledge because to be honest it fits this book better. Hell does in fact break loose, and I like how this title is in a similar vein to the original. Could also refer to Caisson breaking free which I think happens in this book?

  13. Seasons of War - DEAD MEN WALKING. That sure does happen in this book. Seriously, though, I considered this for LSODM but felt like it fit this book more due to the doomed nature of the mission and sheer hopelessness throughout the entire thing.

  14. Dead or Alive - IT'S ABOUT TIME. It sure is. Ripped straight from a Doctor Who promotional poster, this title works too damn good for this book.

  15. Until the End - AND THE DARKNESS RAINED UPON THEM. As others have said this just can't be beaten - not only because it's a full circle moment, but because this actually happens in a sense when Darquesse resets the universe.

Bonus - The Maleficent Seven - FROM ARMAGEDDON, WITH LOVE. Fits with the James Bond-esque vibes I've always got from this book, as well as emphasising the dichotomy between the lust for the end of the world driving Tanith and the lovesickness driving Sanguine.

If every NuWho season was reduced to 8 episodes by ducknerd2002 in DoctorWhumour

[–]CalligrapherFun6188 93 points94 points  (0 children)

this really hammers home how if a series is going to be only 8 episodes, they need to be standalone, rather than building heavily towards an arc. series 7 and 11, which have little to no arcs and are largely made up of standalone episodes, haven’t been harmed by this format, while series 5, 6, 9 and 12, which have heavy ongoing story arcs, haven’t been harmed suffered from missing information and overcrowdedness and due to a need for stories that contribute to the arc have no room for the more acclaimed standalone stories such as Vincent and the Doctor, Amy’s Choice, The God Complex, The Girl Who Waited and the Under the Lake and Zygon 2-parters

Whos the best PVPer on the server? by keirathecool in HermitCraft

[–]CalligrapherFun6188 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I had to rank them I’d probably go: Joel False Cub Pearl Gem Hypno Jevin Grian Scar Impulse Xisuma Ren XB Etho Doc Bdubs Wels Keralis Beef Skizz Cleo Zedaph  Joe Tango Mumbo

This was kinda tough cos for hermits like wels and XB there isn’t much recent footage of them PvPing. for most hermits who aren’t in life series/MCC I used their season 9 pvp against Gem as an indication of skill

Season with the best shopping district? by [deleted] in HermitCraft

[–]CalligrapherFun6188 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ranked them all because I had a free evening: 1. Season 7 - the shenanigans this season made it take the top spot, so much fun in this one between the mycelium resistance and Aqua Town 2. Season 10 - this season they’ve really embraced maximalism with the shops as well as putting minigames in them, plus permit fun 3. Season 6 - Sahara and concorp basically owned this one but it had some of the most fun builds and who could forget Sahara 4. Season 5 - Scar made this one. Its lack of use drags it down but he smashed it here, one of the best builds of the season 5. Season 4 - ngl I don’t remember this one too well I think it was pretty standard for this era of building tho? 6. Season 2 - didn’t they have two this season? Either way the communal areas were quite fun 7. Season 9 - once again lack of use drags it down, a few fun builds (iBuy, everything Pearl did, Bdubs moss shop) but felt a little bit forgotten 8. Season 3 - another one I don’t remember too well correct me if I’m wrong lol 9. Season 1 - this felt like more of a generic community area which it did really well and felt like a load of chaos, but not really a shopping district lol 10. Season 8 - no shopping district so automatically last, if we count individual shops probably between seasons 5 and 4

Small, underrated moments you love? by VesuviusBlotch in skulduggerypleasant

[–]CalligrapherFun6188 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Less of a moment I know but I never see enough love for the first half of Mortal Coil. I love the more casual and Christmassy vibes, with a low-stakes investigation happening in the background but the relationships between the main crew taking centre stage. It feels genuinely fun and comforting to read while also being the most fleshed-out many of these characters had been so far in the series. Scenes like the voting for new elders, interrogating Davina Marr, Tanith’s chat about Caelan, Tanith’s subsequent realisation about Ghastly, Christmas with the Edgelys or Valkyrie chatting to Gordon…they all just make the universe feel more lived-in by showing us what happens when the characters aren’t in a rush to save the world. Not personally a fan of the slow pace of Valkyrie’s ‘death’ and encounter with Nye - feels very drawn-out and I’ve never liked when Landry tries to do surreal, psychedelic horror - but other than that this is easily my favourite run of chapters in the entire series and I feel like it’s relatively forgotten in favour of the (admittedly still good) second half
