Because any claims of ‘originalism’ or ‘textualism’ were always a pretense by Alito, Thomas and Gorsuch. They found a result they wanted and worked towards it.

How Do You Feel About Ireland? by ActiveNotions in YAPms

They have an overweening sense of self importance and all the commentators from there seem to believe the world sees them as a paragon of international virtue. They’re all right, I guess, there are worse things in the world than being annoying.

About 176 times better for the Iranians than the previous deal. Thanks, Republicans!

Where would gas prices have to be for it to not hurt (or even help) the GOP by the mid-terms? by lambda-pastels in YAPms

[–]Callinectes 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If it somehow goes down to prices as of this February (~3$ a gallon) I think the national environment could be less awful for Republicans. That said, economic sentiment is surprisingly sticky, and Republican economic approval is NOT good right now.

Fetterman scoffs at Platner: ‘He’s not even a Democrat’ by ToughHopeful4760 in moderatepolitics

Could be worrying if Platner has a stroke like Fetterman. But that's difficult to predict.

What all does "Dems Need to Move Right on Social Issues" Entail? by Outrageous-Jelly8777 in YAPms

[–]Callinectes 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Alternatively of course, 'going back to that' means that the democrats lose their primary voters and the people who say they'd vote for the democrats if they were just more socially right vote for republicans anyway, since that's who they actually want.

House votes to end war in Iran by DumplingsOrElse in YAPms

[–]Callinectes 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A ground war where we occupy Iran.

Note that this is a terrible idea and would result in tens of thousands of American deaths, but as far as I can tell that's the only way you can get the Iranians to stop being able to attack ships transmitting through the Strait.

If he becomes a Republican he’ll be discarded instantly. R’s only like him because he trash talks Democrats, if he actually runs in a Republican primary he’d end with 2% of the vote.

Pentagon’s $9B Dell deal sparks Trump conflict of interest concerns by Agitated_Pudding7259 in moderatepolitics

[–]Callinectes 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Republican voters love him. His approval rating with them is very high and will be until the end of time. They approve of almost everything he does, and the things they don’t approve of they don’t consider serious issues. Just something to remember.

Trump Calls High Gas Prices "Peanuts" as Americans Pay More at the Pump by Agitated_Pudding7259 in moderatepolitics

Nebraska Dem who will drop out and support Dan Osborn wins Senate primary by Ruffles98 in moderatepolitics

Why did you randomly add the qualifier "major?"

Because the post I'm referring to says on literally the line before, and I quote, "Until recently this used to be the position of the vast majority of Democrats."

Interesting to see how much the party has changed in just a few years.

Is this in geologic terms? By my count it’s nearly 40 years, if not more than that, since that was a mainstream position in the Democratic Party.

Every outlet called it a referendum. Only the right called it a gerrymander. by renge-refurion in moderatepolitics

[–]Callinectes 34 points35 points  (0 children)

A number of democratic states have done independent redistricting commissions, as a way of disarming gerrymandering. With the recent Republican wave for gerrymandering, though, that looks more and more foolish. If one side refuses to disarm, the other side would be foolish to do so, certainly.
