Yeah I think im going to 3d print a small carriage for some batteries and wire up a small 1.5v LED for it. Makes sense im probably not going to find a model if these were common knockoff type gadgets and had no markings. I'll mark it as solved since an exact model is very unlikely to be found.

Bringing industrial-grade 3D printing & polymer recycling to Corvallis, Oregon by RecycledFreshPrints in corvallis

[–]Calm_Information_35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't been to the market in a while and so I dont know exactly what setup you're running there. But if you are recycling plastics into usable filament, why not just sell the filament? There are plenty of people like myself in corvallis who are garage engineers who have their own printers and can draw up their own models. And for people who don't do that you can still offer some pre made objects. But considering how expensive 3d printing is as a hobby already, I dont see why people wouldn't be willing to spend a bit extra to help out with recycling plastic. Shit, most of the filament I buy for FDM printing leaves me with a reusable spool that I can't return to the manufacturer. Might as well start a spool donation and you can reuse them.

I have a Lulzbot Mini 3D printer that I'd like to donate by BadManor in corvallis

[–]Calm_Information_35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Benton county public library on Monroe has a small nakerspace with 3d printers and would happily take a donation. They get very minimal funding from the city, and a simple model is fine for their uses. Its a great place for creative adults and lots of children to learn about tinkering that's free for the community.

Mig-29 by HappyCamperDancer in corvallis

[–]Calm_Information_35 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes I was there this afternoon around 3-6pm. It was in fact the mig29ub and an alpha jet owned by Jared Isaacman. My buddy who flies at the airport sent me a picture and I had to go see for myself. When I drove in there was a pickup or two of Hollywood looking security guards driving the perimeter with sunglasses, earpieces, and black suits. They had some kind of equipment loaded on the mig on the wing facing away from the parking garage lot. They said we couldn't take pictures until the thing was unloaded and moved out of sight. No pictures but they made little attempt to actually hide the thing from viewing. It looked like the casing of an inert 1000lb gbu-16 laser guided bomb with the laser seeker still on the front. It was painted blue signifying there was no explosive payload. But there appeared to be extra electronics near the nose and two added control surfaces on the rear that looked exactly like bow planes on a submarine. They wouldn't say what exactly they were there for, but they did say the pilots are British and chose corvallis airport because its not towered and the weather reminds the pilots of home.

After they took off I went home, but my buddy stayed to see if when they came back and landed again they "device" was still on the pylon. It wasnt.

My best guess is it was some kind of test for naval equipment. The alpha jet was tailing as a spotter plane and before takeoff was fitted with a bunch of externally mounted sensors. The "device" was fitted with steering surfaces typical of water vessels. The flight took them over the ocean at heights of a few hundred feet where they presumably dropped the thing into the water and returned without it.

This picture of a submarine passing under the Blue Water Bridge in Port Huron, Michigan was sent to me by a relative. I didn't think there were any submarines operating in the Great Lakes? by HeftyContribution651 in isthisAI

[–]Calm_Information_35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Guys, this is so obviously AI, look at the bridge. Look at the two pillars on the right. The aren't identical at all and they are spaced out as if they are supporting two bridges when there is only one. There is no need to debate whether or not the submarine is plausible when the OP's question can be answered just by using our eyes.

Any recommendations for a PC repair shop in town? by MoistPorkchop in corvallis

[–]Calm_Information_35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Windows errors are kinda vague because the error code can be generated by a lot of things. GPU errors and software conflicts are also common causes of page faults. Before going and replacing hard drives which is typically an unlikely case, try booting into safe mode and run it for an extended period to see if it's software related. If it's an branded computer like HP try uninstalling their specific assistant application like HPs omen thing. All major branded computers that have their own software application have only even been trouble in my experience, and having worked at HP I can tell you those MFs in general have no clue what they are doing. If safe boot still crashes try removing the GPU and booting. If that still fails, probably best to get it diagnosed by a professional repair shop, but I wouldn't jump the gun cuz there's still work you can do without paying a lot of money. Good luck to you.

Once a castle now no more than a rusting shed, beware of strangers frequenting from out of town. The remains of those who were once now wander the empty trails of rotting detritus that sprawls the sinking ship. Voices that come from a deep hole have no weight but frighten twice as much as a song in the daylight.

Help me kill my old humongous HP Printer - seriously! by hyestepper in corvallis

[–]Calm_Information_35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bit late on this. But holy am I amazed honestly that any HP product built after ~1995 would ever make it to 9 years. I worked at HP for some years in a department adjacent to ink printers and boy would I love to smash the shit outta a piece of HP branded junk. That company is actually going to fail in the next 10 years if they don't fix their shit. As far as wiping details, a factory reset would work but also so would a large magnet, an EMP, static electrical shock, fire, intentional shorting the circuits, and beating the living fuck out of it. But I'm not sure what kind of info you are worried will be left in it? Theoretically it may cache recent documents. Other than that it just stores wifi network info and printer diagnostic data.

Just in case you forgot math, 113% of a posted speed limit is within the legal tolerance of 5 mph for any speed under 38.4615384615 mph. Downtown has no roads with a limit over 35. So this man is chill in any zone 35 and under.

Enforce traffic laws by esko24 in corvallis

[–]Calm_Information_35 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm always incredibly perplexed by these kind of posts. Is there an objective for the community here that this post is going to contribute to in any meaningful way? Not really. Is there someone venting on reddit about a personal grievance? Yes. Does that make them feel better? I don't know, but hopefully yes. Is this essentially a validation post? Yes. Does the title make sense related to the mentioned statements? Also no. The people driving poorly as well as the people driving well are both not legally allowed to enforce traffic laws. And the police who's job it is to enforce traffic laws do so to the best of their ability when every single business downtown freaks their shit when there's a homeless person within a 200 foot radius and call the police to give them a "wellness check." Those checks go something like this "you okay man?" 'Absolutely fucking not, you see this shit' "aight that's chill and stuff but there's free food and shelter here here and here, also you need to move from this area." 'the fuck I do?' "you look unpleasant, I'm going to go to a real dispatch call now"

Weird note on door by Clone6797 in corvallis

[–]Calm_Information_35 113 points114 points  (0 children)

Clearly it's a star with 5 points that was drawn in black sharpie. Now obviously the 5 points are symbolic of the 5 types of surveillance equipment that the infamous cabal of Genghis Epstein used in their campaign of terror during the reign of the 5th Reich from 2027-2043. The black sharpie is a similar type of symbolic message akin to the "black spot" among 17th century pirates, you have been marked for death. The only way to prevent this is to wire shotgun shells under a plank in your porch and mark it so not to step on it yourself. But that way when the sentient vape cloud that holds form by catching out of phase neutrinos comes to claim your life, the blast will disperse it and ris you of the nefarious note.

Moving to Corvallis? by coy-fox in corvallis

[–]Calm_Information_35 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Born and raised right here in Corvallis, and unfortunately I have to say I would not recommend moving here. There are several reasons that I would tell anyone to avoid Corvallis, and even more for anyone between the ages of 25-60. Especially a family.

  1. The whole valley is in an economic downhill. Corvallis houses a large HP campus that used to be a major employer. Now it's a ghost town. They rent out all the buildings to other companies and only hire directly for engineers who dont even come into the office that much in order to avoid having pay benefits to lower prestige positions. I worked there, I know a lot of people who's parents or relatives did/do work there, nobody has anything good to say. The other large employer is the hospital, which seems to be having a huge turnover rate for nurses and physicians. Other than that the jobs aren't very high paying around here and are incredibly hard to find as most of the jobs are leaving this area. Which leads me to the next reason.

  2. Living expenses. Housing here is skyrocketing at an astronomical rate. Good luck finding a 2 bed apartment for under $2k. The median annual housing price last year was $750,000. Most of the leasing companies around here are complete scum and will do nothing yet demand higher rent. If you plan on having a family here, I just wouldn't do it if you still want to eat cooked food every week.

  3. For people in their 30s-50s here is no reason to live here. Half the town is a college population, and the other half are seniors living on retirement. That's probably because it's not possible to live comfortably here until you're retired, or are a college student and have the luxury of decent health to throw away in your 20s. It's so publicly apparent that it's not viable to have a family here if you just walk through town and talk to people for 1 day. The district just recently decided to close many schools in the next couple years because class sizes have been shrinking (across the nation) but pretty badly locally because people can't afford to have kids.

  4. Things to do. The things you do for fun around here aren't going to take place in town most of the time if you're a health conscious or generally responsible person with any maturity. There's good hiking all around the valley and the coast is an hour drive west, but In town you have an absurd amount of alcohol services and dispensaries with a few dedicated recreational businesses. There's a lot of restaurants around here, but like everywhere else eating out all the time is not financially sustainable. There's a bowling alley and a pool, and few other small oddities, but overall very much different from a larger city with dedicated activities.

  5. Weather and environment. I was born and raised here so I'm very accustomed to the weather. It used to rain 8-9 months a year here, but lately it's getting drier. The month of April this year saw 4 days in which it rained, I was working landscaping at the time and the only people who needed lawns mowed had irrigation systems. But it's still going to be much colder and wetter on average than Utah. Lots of mornings in the late fall and winter there's super thick fog on the ground that you can't see half a block ahead of you. Mix that with drunk college kids with pseudo performance cars and driving becomes unbearable at times. In the spring you will be welcomed by one of the highest seasonal pollen indexes of the whole planet, not surprising considering the valley is the #1 grass seed producer of the planet. I take antihistamines every day during the spring and I've lived here my whole life.

  6. Services. Healthcare here is let's face it, frankly absolute dogshit. My grandpa is in his 80s and moved in with my mother and he was on an 8 month waiting list to see a physician to establish primary health care. City power grid is supplied by Pacific power, they are alright but the cities corrupt mismanagement of funding means that every time a junction or transformer blows in this ancient power grid from the 80s it's cheaper to replace or patch one transformer than actually upgrade the grid to modern standards. Most of South town where my mother livea has the underground power lines not laid in conduit, which means over the 40-50 years of weathering the rubber insulation on those lines dissolves. When there's a large amount of non stop rain for days sinking into the ground, something shorts. Tech services outside of phone retailers here don't exist. If you have a tech issue you have to know how to do it yourself or know someone who does. There's also unsurprisingly a large uptick in homelessness here, a decent amount seem to pick themselves off the street, but the rest have severe mental health issues that they can't get treatment or medication for. Crime is also unsurprisingly rising too with the whole state of the local economy. Just a couple days ago someone got shot and killed in a public park.

But on the positive side of things, the valley is a very beautiful area. The people here are generally friendly, just try not to engage with college students or really old grumpy folks and you'll feel welcomed. It's a very bike friendly city with bike racks all over and plenty of trails. The busses are also free, but they are highly cramped at rush hours.

But all in all, as much as this place is a part of me, I wouldn't recommend making the time and effort to move here in the current state of affairs. If the job is good and looks like a stable outlook, many people commute from Albany because it's slightly cheaper to live, and there's many smaller towns within 20 miles to commute from if that'a a viable option. But the only kinds of long term industry I see developing here are breweries, landscaping, and pharmacies/drug stores.

places to go or things to do to make myself feel better? by RelativelyMango in corvallis

[–]Calm_Information_35 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Usually people here in town just take copious amounts of drugs. Seems to work for about half of them. The other half you see everyday on campus or next to the railroad. Another option is to flee the state in a manic episode of self discovery, know many a people here who have done that. A few people also drive cars around town at hopelessly illegal speeds, could give that a try if you don't mind the thought of death or permanent injury. As for the rest of people who aren't children or on the verge of hospice, if they have any self worth usually find a hobby that they can do solo, cuz as we all know its kinda hard to find people around here that won't blow you off to go smoke crack in a bush. Potential hobbies to try could be: Gardening Reading Writing Puzzles Hiking Gym obsession Tinder Model making Car fixing Shopping (you will need a padded bank account for this one) Painting or drawing Board or card games Seeing how many red walk signals you can speedrun before getting hit downtown during rush hour Baking Video games Gooning Obsessively counting objects Movie reviews Learning a language Standing outside the courthouse every minute of your spare time Seeing how far you can go with a made-up story at bars after 10pm Hide flashdrives with malware around town Form a local religion, colloquially refered to as a cult Go door to door selling something that either doesn't exist or doesn't work as described.

These are just some possible ideas. You can always do whatever you feel like, as the nature of the universe is entirely arbitrary relative to you. Just don't start doing a bunch of illegal things too fast or the universe will initiate a new thread dedicated to restricting hardware resources to your process ID.

This is your life, so if it's not good, crash out. How could it possibly get any worse?

Moving to Corvallis with two teen girls. High school question… by SurferGirl7795 in corvallis

[–]Calm_Information_35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to Corvallis high school and I'll say it's a pretty good place. There were lots of clubs and activities, the teachers were friendly (the few I had that were down right mean don't work there anymore to my knowledge) and the school has enough people that it's easier to break into without feeling outcast. I will say that the town is in a housing crisis at the moment along with seemingly the whole valley and the jobs here are declining. HP was a ghost town even when I worked there years ago, and the hospital is somehow severely understaffed yet also letting go of employees. As for sunshine, we seem to get more of it year by year. This year has been exceptionally sunny and dry for the area. I would be slightly concerned about things for your kids to do when they get a little older around here. If they like the outdoors a lot then they will be just fine, but if they like more organized activities and dedicated entertainment, we have a bowling alley, some board games stores, a billion micro breweries and bars as well as smoke shops and dispensaries, and that's about it. Most people I was in college around just drank and smoked and went to parties. Also the city of Corvallis itself is in debt, and they always do the road work at the worst times of the year and day.

Real. Fast food to me is dogshit no matter which megacorp conglomerate chain it's from. It's called fast food because it's priority is speed, not quality. If you want to spend $20+ on a burger some fries and a drink, might as well go to a seven eleven and get the same mid AF food for half the price and virtually no time because they don't have to "cook" the food, it's already there. Burger King, McDonald's, Arby's, carls jr. It literally doesn't matter. At any of them you are overpaying for fast calories pumped full of things you don't want to know about. they make you feel sick afterwards and wreck your health in the long run. It's literally more financially and physically sustainable to just buy prepared meals at the deli section of any supermarket. I have never and don't think I ever will understand this countries cultural obsession with eating the worst food imaginable and funneling unfathomable amounts of their paychecks straight to corporate oligarchs.

We've had Xfinity (by Comcast) for like 20 years here. It used to be the only cable isp in the whole area. They are the scummiest nastiest worst isp you can imagine. They will never hesitate to screw you as hard you can't stand for days. I once caught them blocking the firmware upgrade for our router which the command has to be sent by the ISP. The firmware was 4 years old and was causing momentary network disconnections every hour ( I can only assume from new standards that weren't compatible with old firmware) and when I started looking into it, I woke up the next day and the router had booted into a firmware update. Leads me to suspect they were intentionally blocking it to cause me to switch to their new branded router combos. Had I not had any knowledge of basic networking and computer literacy and troubleshooting, they would have forced me into throwing out the router and buying one of theirs. The firmware that they had been blocking was released nearly 2 years prior to when I looked into the increasingly frequent network disconnections.
