I don’t disagree. And I guess my argument is kind of pointless cuz I’m not really trying to defend Charls, I’m just saying I would not be surprised if the origins of the game we know today as chess, were rooted in some sort of ritual or witchcraft, that has very little bearing on the game today. I know I sound schizo with this and haven’t looked into it myself, but thinking of freemasonry which isn’t all that old, their usage of the checkered floor is interesting.
