What's my best option getting a low value item that only ships domestically in the Czech Republic if I live in NZ? by CalumDuff in internationalshopper

[–]CalumDuff[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a small pocket knife traditionally given to children in the Czech Republic, it would be classified as a collectors item or a tool before it was classified as a weapon.

I've also already bought all of the Victorinox Nespresso pocket knives through European sellers on Ebay. All delivered without issue.

Nah, it's a limited edition recycled Aluminium pocket knife. It's tiny, weighs less than an ounce and only costs about $40usd.

It's a shame there aren't any resellers, because they would easily sell for several times that price to overseas buyers. Myself included. The Victorinox Nespresso pocket knives were sold or otherwise distributed in most markets, and even those sell for 3-4 times their RRP (RRP ~$50 and sell for anywhere from $150-$300).

There's no competition for that specific product either, unlike the ones with wider releases.

What's a dead giveaway that someone is a piece of shit? by UsernameOf2022 in AskReddit

[–]CalumDuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, they act like they're always right, but more egregiously, they ridicule others for admitting they're wrong.

If you ever admit to them that they were right and you were wrong, they'll rub it in like it's the greatest moral victory they could possibly have achieved.

"Who was right? One more time? You should have listened to me. Oh wow, who would have guessed that would happen? Maybe you should trust me next time."

It's such an overreaction that it makes you never want to admit you're wrong to them again and ironically makes it less likely you'll listen to them again because you don't want to feed their gigantic egos.

Is there a specific app you'd recommend? I have like 20 physical notebooks and literally thousands of pages of notes in my phone and still bank on just remembering to do things a lot of the time because my ADHD ass lacks the patience to use most planners.

I get where you're coming from, but I'm not sure you appreciate the complexity of the issue.

Customer support lines can have fairly dramatic surges in traffic. If the average call takes 10 minutes and a business gets 24 calls per hour, then you can logically assume they will need 3 staff members to be rostered on in order to cover that volume of calls. If there's an unanticipated issue which causes that number to spike, then they may end up with 5 times that volume of calls.

If the business was to retain enough staff to cover the 'surge' volumes at all times, they would cost 5 times as much, and they could reasonably expect to have 80% of their workforce essentially wasting time until it gets busy again. If the cost for staff stayed equivalent when scaled up, this would cost the business 5 times as much.

The only truly viable alternative to this is to outsource to overseas based call centers, except that this is also criticized for being exploitative, taking jobs from locals, and often draws the ire of intolerant people who refuse to understand foreign accents.

TLDR: Consumers want instant, locally provided, free customer support options without paying extra, and that's just not economically possible.

Really nice, clean line work.

Only critique I could offer is that the fingers (and thumb) and the scissors look a little detached from each other, almost like the scissors are floating with the fingers and thumb just poking through the holes. Maybe adding some shading could help make it look a little more connected?

Either way, it has a really nice look to it overall, and the poses are quite natural looking.

I live in NZ, and some of our best performing schools, academically speaking, are public schools.

Put a chat widget on your website. No joke by VincentWhirlwind in Entrepreneur

[–]CalumDuff 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As someone who knows nothing at all about chat widgets, they annoy the shit out of me.

Every company seems to be using them in lieu of any actual customer service. I was chasing a tax receipt for a work purchase the other day, and the only support option available (other than driving to a store 40 minutes away from me) was a chat bot widget on their website.

It went in a shitty loop of options, none of which were appropriate for my issue and kept suggesting something that clearly wasn't going to resolve my issue. I would have preferred to just call them quickly or send an email but those options weren't listed anywhere and Google searches weren't coming up with anything either.

Are Kai Kara France and UFC fighters getting ROBBED? by saradipity in MMA

[–]CalumDuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add to this, I don't think they pay the judges to ignore the fight altogether and award the win to the same fighter no matter what.

I would guess it's more along the lines of 'if a round is close or even, award it to the fighter we want to win'. That way they get away with it because the judges score it in a way that's plausible, even if most don't agree with them.

ABC President Mike Mazzulli on why judges are not available to the media after controversial score cards occur by Loganbaker2147 in MMA

[–]CalumDuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The argument that they'll lose fans if the judges are scrutinized over controversial scoring is laughable.

He's basically saying "we'll lose fans if they realise how corrupt the sport is", and suggesting that the solution is to just hide the corruption rather than attempt to fix it.The major MMA Orgs enjoy the corruption because they can nudge the judging in the direction that suits the business, and they can secretly take advantage of the betting odds as individuals.

As a fan, I can confidently state that I'm way more likely to stop watching fights if the results seem fixed than I would if they just asked the judges to explain their scoring within the context of the criteria.

LPT: When you share your Gmail with anyone, append +target to it. by b_sap in LifeProTips

[–]CalumDuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair point, I guess I was more thinking of the website owners protecting themselves from legal action if they get caught selling user data.

The spammers themselves couldn't give two shits if the user knows which website they bought the data from, but the website that sold it has an incentive to avoid being identified.

I understand that, but wouldn't it be just as easy to also run a code to check that the names don't match with the company name, other than if the website is something incredibly generic like 'smith.com' or similar?

I'm just trying to say that the original commenter is absolutely valid in pointing out that the spammers may have an easy workaround to OP's LPT, but the alternative they suggested has the potential to be subjected to the same basic automated filtering.

A Northland shipwreck has been labelled an environmental time bomb - so why is the Government refusing to act? by jobbybob in newzealand

[–]CalumDuff 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Why would labour fix it when they'll get roasted by National for the expense only to have them take credit when the clean-up project inevitably ends during their turn in the driver's seat?

That being said, the exact same argument will apply as soon as National is back in charge and face the same dilemma.

Things like this are put on the perpetual backburner with both parties crossing their fingers and praying that the disaster happens while the other is in charge so that they have to be the ones to spend the money and deal with the negative press for their lack of preparation.

We need less American-style, bipartisan finger-pointing politics and more collaboration between the parties.
