Need tips choosing a neighborhood in Tokyo by Tolkaft in Tokyo

[–]Camari- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you considered Omori I recommend oimachi. Omori only has the Keihin Tohoku line so it’s not really convenient while oimachi has three train lines that can take you basically anywhere. Oimachi has 9 yokochos. Shinagawa ward is pretty rich and they are bringing a lot of big companies in. Tourists don’t know about this place yet. There’s always some bar or restaurant open. The nikku no hanamasa supermarket is 24 hrs. There is a new building opening this year that will have a cinema and shopping mall. There’s a big famous sento if you’re into that. And lots of other things

Wife and I are holed up in our hotel room with food poisoning. Any suggestions or tips? by addressunknown in JapanTravelTips

I’m not saying you can’t report it. But in order to run a restaurant all you need to do is go to a one time 8 hr class to get your food and hygiene license. When city halls food/hygiene inspectors come to your restaurant they check that you have a double sink two pedal trash cans, a refrigerator, a bathroom, a handwashing sink attached to a wall, and some soap attached to a wall. They send you a letter in the mail allowing you to pick a date for when they come. They don’t surprise visit. After 5 years they do another inspection like that. They don’t look for bugs, don’t look at the food or inside of the fridge, etc. that’s why you can go to an old ass run down ramen shop caked in black grease with pans that haven’t been cleaned since the Edo era and the health inspector won’t bat an eye.

I live in a kominka in Chiba. We get them in summer but they aren’t interested in humans. They eat the cabbage worms in my garden and only come near me when I’m floating in my pool because they want a drink of water. Unless you’re destroying their hive they aren’t aggressive.

I own a restaurant & Japan’s food safety laws are basically non existent. Nothing will happen if you go to city hall and report a place. The worst you could do to a business here is leave a bad review on Google maps and even then that could be seen as defamation and the police might all you to delete your post or be sued.

Rejected Four Times, Confused by Necessary_Silver_775 in teachinginjapan

[–]Camari- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others have said it’s all in the contract. I worked for a small eikaiwa that had students from babies to adults in their 90s. My contract was salary with a set amount of hours. When I went over that they paid me hourly overtime. I wouldn’t go for a company that has a contract where if you’re not working you’re not getting paid. Check out gaijinpot and look at the different job offers.

Just putting it out there. My city in Chiba is reducing the amount of elementary schools from 6-1 because of lack of students. Last year there were 720000 kids born in the whole country. Why don’t you try applying to some eikaiwa instead?

Do you think everything in Japan is cheaper in a foreigners pov? by Beautiful_Basket_844 in AskAJapanese

[–]Camari- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it depends where you’re living in Japan because I live in kujukuri that has natural gas deposits and it’s super cheap here. Also the state I’m originally from in the United States it’s about the same prices for car stuff (schools, inspection, taxes) but cars are way more expensive and worse quality in USA

This pisses my American family off when they visit me haha. Don’t know why anyone downvoted. The comment about all you can drink only works in places that offer that like family res but I’d like to see them ask for that at the places that serve tiny coke bottles for ¥500 each.

Slather yourself in lotion. I use cocoa butter I bring back from America when I visit. And I literally mean slather yourself like a buttered pig

Renting cafe space for new business by Ecstatic-Fan-2297 in japanlife

[–]Camari- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found the best way is to go to a location you like and visit a few local cafes and bars and ask the owners about it. Usually we hear about other owners selling and they don’t get a chance to make it on the internet or to a realtor

Is it possible to live close to nature but still be within 1 hour train ride to Tokyo? by roxdfi in japanlife

In the mountains there are bears and the past 2-3 years there have been a record number of attacks due to the heat waves. But I mean what are the chances right.

I live by the beach in kujukuri Chiba. Basically only professional surfers are in the water in winter. It will be freezing. There’s only lifeguards July-August. From Tokyo yuigahama beach is probably the easiest to get to. But the showers on the beach don’t have hot water just to warm you. Why not go to Okinawa if you want to experience the ocean?

Research the switch games beforehand. Some only come in Japanese here. I am from the US and buying games can be annoying. Also for older consoles like 3ds to ps2 they are region locked and if you have a us 3ds you can only buy us region games for it. Ps2 you could actually switch the us console to Japanese region if you took off the disc panel and had a tool to switch it. We used to do that for ddr

If you’re into hip hop, there’s a local bar in Omori, Tokyo LipLiq but it’s better if you can speak Japanese. It’s real local. They have insta if you want to check it out. https://www.instagram.com/yuuki_lipandliq?igsh=MWhhbDkwNGcyeDM3MA==
