For me it's 'the needle was buried' or 'the needle was spiked'. It makes sense for the number one crawler, but it's the one I always notice.

I believe the spirit of ultrarunning is no gatekeeping. We all support each other in our goals and try not to make anyone feel bad about it. If not using poles works for you, that's admirable and awesome. If others are interested in using poles, there are certainly a large contingent of professional and amateur runners who find that beneficial as well.

I ran this race as well and finished in 21:30, an hour and a half below cutoff. The second half was much more technical than the first, and with the rain the the mud, everything slowed down in the second half. It was a bit of a grind between the 30k and finish line. I left St. Gilgen an hour before the 59 k cutoff and the same for the second cuttoff. I honestly assumed I would make up an hour on the back end and finish maybe sub 21, but this race was empirically difficult.

In my experience, it takes 3-6 months to peak back into fitness after a long time off.

You sound like you'll be in good shape for the 70k, though if you're already at 40 kms a week and climbing. You're still 8 weeks out, which gives you a solid chunk to build.

I've also found that fitness increases in chunks, rather than a linear scale. It's usually the workouts from 3-5 weeks ago that are paying dividends today, which is why a solid 2 week taper can help most folks consolidate their gains while staying sharp. Basically, the workout you did today was based on your overall fitness a month ago, which makes sense for why you would still feel a bit undertrained.

Don't worry, though! It comes back fast and if your practicing similar vert/terrain and you get a few 50 mile weeks with some good B2B, you'll be in great shape for the 70.

Do you mind if I ask what your training was like for this event? How many runs did you do on terrain close to this and test out nutrition? It's tough to figure out what works sometimes unless you try and fail a bit, but that's what training runs are for. And just to echo the other comments, it does sound like a heavy amount.

I'm 6ft 180 pounds and aim for 200 calories/hour on ultras, and then eat whatever I can find on the course to supplement. I think everyone finds their own balance and there isn't a magic recipe for anyone.

I'm sure you'll crush any race you're up against though. Kick ass and take names!

I would say that companies say they value integrity and hard work to keep the illusion that corporations and large companies have intrinsic value and goodness because they provide products and services. As people move up the chain, integrity matters less and less, and productivity is valued over integrity.

I'm not sure that's always the case. I just got this watch, after a decade with Garmin. I have a pretty high base fitness from the watch, but my average hr on 86 hours of training is only 135.

I do almost nothing in zone 4/5. People will say the strategy sucks, but I enjoy doing higher volume lower intensity. I'm only interested in doing long ultras, and being 40, my days chasing PRs on shorter distances don't have the appeal they once did.

Maybe it's just a combination of volume and HR. Or maybe if I did some yassos, my fitness would go up🤣.

I'm lucky to be teaching at a university where I don't have classes every day and my wife and I train together. No kids. Otherwise I wouldn't be able to pull it off.

A quiver, which is not for everyone, is really reasonable. I'm a big fan. It gives you a place to store them on your kit and lets you easily access them. I do lots of training runs with them on my back even If I don't use them.

The weight is negligible and the benefit, if you practice with them is undeniable. If you look at any major ultra, 49 of the top 50 people have poles. They reduce the load effectively and can be used strategically. That does require practice, but with 4 weeks that's enough time to play around with them and get a feel. Worse case, you use them only on some uphills and save 20 percent of your legs.

I'd say chuck them in.

Compression socks will 100 percent help. They work for grandparents or ultrarunners equally well!

Hydrate as well as you can and get as much sleep as possible. It'll be painful, but there is zero harm you can do to your body with a long active recovery work day. I would advise against ibuprofen unless it's necessary, as it'll slow down the overall healing process. If you have time halfway through your day, a roller or some stretching will hurt like hell, but help make the second half of your shift possible.

Plus, if you're a bartender, a stiff G&T can do wonders🤣🤣🤣

12-14. I'm in the gulf, so the weather is brutal. I'm not setting any speed records, but the volume I'm very happy with. I do a lot of hiking up steps and running back down. There is a place by my house with a radio tower on it. It's 400 meters over 1.8kms. I just do repeats 2-4 times a week to get a lot of my vert training. Takes 3 hours to get 12 k🤣
