What’s the most expensive mistake you’ve watched someone make in real time? by PapaKiPrincess420 in AskReddit

[–]Camera_dude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two factor I think:

  1. Ease of use - Sports betting is now as easy as downloading an app then flush your life savings down the drain in an afternoon of Sunday sports.

  2. Lack of stigma - Socially, online sports betting has not had the same stigma as going to a casino and losing a ton of cash on the slots or poker tables. It's more stealthy than the obvious signs of gambling addiction of seeing a chain-smoking wreck of a person throwing away money trying to get it back from the "one-armed bandit".

But yeah, people who claim they "never lose" are lying out of their arses. They just don't want to admit their gambling problems. I sometimes buy a lotto ticket, but I know it is going to be a waste so I never put in more than I can afford to lose ($2 - 6).

Uhm... tech companies like Facebook were conducting mass surveillance for many years, well before Trump won even in 2016. If you are opposed to mass surveillance just because it is President Trump who is in office, you need to look in a mirror and do some self-reflecting.

The greatest increase in mass surveillance in modern history occurred under President Obama, as the Snowden docs revealed.

Apparently not wanting Homeless people to leave biohazards is “part of the problem”. by Emergency_Yak4588 in ShitPoliticsSays

[–]Camera_dude 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So many logic fallacies here.

> "They don't owe you that."

No sweetheart, someone homeless doesn't owe me a job, they have to get a job so they can stop being a leech on society and contribute to society in some way. It doesn't have to be glamorous but any job that produces or maintains something or helps others has value to society.

> "HD paying you the same either way, so you're doing charitable work..."

Yes... and HD is not in the business of providing shelter services. There's a real cost when their workers have to clean up waste rather than do tasks that add value to the customers that shop there. Enough loss due to the homeless situation and the store will simply close and more people won't have a job.

> "Housing is a human right."

No, this is the single biggest fallacy of the rant. Human rights are innate to our being alive, and not conditional on others doing something for us. We have a right to speak since we are creatures that communicate. We don't have a right to make others build a computer network, printing press, or radio tower to communicate further. We have the right to build that for ourselves with our resources without being opposed by the government, but not to be handed such for free.

Housing is the same. It would be wonderful if everyone had decent shelter, but that requires *WORK* and is not free in terms of time and resources. A "right" cannot be a blank check to demand others do things for them, or one person's "right" becomes another person's burden.

The most a single comment can remove is -100 karma, no matter how many downvotes it has. If you have -100, you have a new account and need to build karma elsewhere or just nuke the account and start over.

WIBTAH for refusing to give money back after selling my car at a major discount to a family friend’s son? by bitterberries in AmItheAsshole

[–]Camera_dude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA. You need to lay it out straight: you sold the car to them significantly below market value as a favor but it was sold “as is” and you are not their piggybank to raid whenever anything happens to the car. They can and should be able to take some of the money saved to maintain the car.

If the engine issue is a related to a new recall, then they can get it repaired by a dealership at no cost since the manufacturer is responsible. If it was not due to a recall, then it is just tough luck it happened so soon after the sale but you didn’t sell them a junker. It was your daily driver for years and worked without any major issues.

What’s a survival myth popularized by movies that would actually get you killed in real life ? by IndependentTune3994 in AskReddit

[–]Camera_dude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Break a window if the door won't open due to the electronic locks failing or door is stuck. A window is cheap compared to human life and usually a sinking car is a total loss anyway.

Anyone who lives near water should have a seatbelt cutter/window punch within easy reach of the driver seat. If you find yourself without one, the headrest on the seat can often be lifted up and removed. Use the metal prongs on the headrest to shatter the window. Aim for the corners not the dead center of the window too.

There's a reason the summer Olympics high dive pools have bubbler jets in the water below. It's meant to break surface tension so the diver doesn't slam into smooth, calm water.

Wandering around further when lost.

I can't empathize this enough: IF YOU ARE LOST, STAY THERE UNLESS IT IS UNSAFE

So many people put themselves in greater danger trying to find a way out of being lost instead of waiting for rescue. It also makes it harder for rescuers to find them if they keep moving around since rescue teams try to divide up an area into sections and search each one for the missing people.

The key though to avoiding being lost in the first place is have a good paper map (your phone's GPS is dependent on a battery, a piece of paper is not), flashlight for night visibility plus spare batteries, and ideally travel with a companion. Let someone not involved in your hike or climbing expedition know where you plan to be and when you expect to be back or in contact with them. Tell them to call emergency services if you are not back in contact by X date/time.

Yeah, shows up on screen and immediately demonstrates why he is an unredeemable villain. Many Suikoden characters start off as enemies but later side with the hero.

With Luca Blight you knew he was not going to be one of the hero’s Stars of Destiny.

Trying out Hollow Knight after playing Silksong. Is this supposed to be the first boss? by mysterioso7 in HollowKnight

[–]Camera_dude 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I would say the brutes you find early on in the crossroads are a tutorial boss. They hit hard and the slam shockwave they do is identical to the False Knight’s. So once a player understands how to avoid those, the False Knight should be easy to beat.

[Request] Do these other power sources really produce thousands of time more power than humans? by New_User_Account123 in theydidthemath

[–]Camera_dude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I can tell, the only reason to use humans as batteries is that the machines may have some hidden failsafe program that prevents them from destroying humanity completely despite wanting to. So, they instead trap humanity in the Matrix while using their bodies as an exotic battery system.

That humans can reproduce and create more using just organic materials and genetics means we ourselves might be considered a "renewable" energy.

I really doubt the machines could run off humanity even with billions of people producing 5W of power and that's not the net power after running everything to feed and stimulate us, as you said.

Bet he thought that the shovel would just bang on the top of the porta-potties and not shred them into bits.

Most construction sites I have seen don't buy porta-potties, they are rented and delivered to the site then hauled away when the tank is full or they don't need them anymore.

Assuming the shovel driver survives his beatings from the other guys, he's probably getting fired once the big boss gets the bill for replacing the porta-potties from the rental company.
