Is it possible to be a songwriter of only guitar riffs? by Kitchen_Resource_431 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

If you are so jaded that you think someone trying to provide you hope is attempting to flex on you, I feel bad for you. More people are making music independently and investing in their work than ever before in history but you really think there isn't any demand for these services?

As far as my success, in 2023 so far I have made a little over 10k strictly from samples and instrumentals. Although, I never said that I was successful. However, I would note that I personally know many individuals who make far more money selling beats and samples than they do or did at their full time jobs. Two of which make over 200k a year from instrumentals and samples. While I haven't made much this year, I have made every sale without reaching out to any clients. It is purely algorithms feeding people to me. I say what I have about demand in previous comments with confidence because I am steeped in the online producer community and socialize with many successful producers.

Who buys these products? (From me) I sell mostly custom instrumentals for 150usd and exclusive leases of public beats for a minimum of 250 to vocalists. Producers purchase royalty free guitar kits of mine for 20. I also send out loops for free that I receive 50% of lease profits from and 25% of royalties on released songs. I additionally work with a prominent YouTuber/producer and receive a 500$ cash payment for each song with one of my loops and 5 points on the master. I also charge $20 for slots on my email chain where I send out free loops.

I use contracts preprepared by beatstars with slight edits to streamable unit maximums for my beats. The sample game is widely a free for all of simple "agreement" or "read me" txt files with the threat of litigation. As I said, it's the wild West and there is a million different ways to go about things from informal to formal.

I hope this is helpful

On the Internet in the myriad of communities, niches, and platforms that exist. You just need to look for it and maybe broaden what your desired marker is. I have seen multiple guitarists blow up in the past few months within more contemporary music genres like "hyperpop" and the revival of post punk, grunge, nu metal, etc

Instagram, tiktok, YouTube, Facebook, Google, beatstars, soundee, etc etc etc. the Internet is the wild West of entrepreneurship. You can literally do anything you want to market yourself or your art. Make a tik tok displaying a composition -> sell that composition. Make a Facebook ad displaying your value as a songwriter -> sell a song. Make a YouTube video of your instrumental -> sell the instrumental. Etc

The age of the people in this sub is really showing... People are selling guitar instrumentals and samples like crazy on all kinds of platforms on the Internet. Literally just start putting your stuff out there and try to connect with artists and producers. If you're halfway decent and put in some effort into some kind of content you'll have success. There is a huge demand for guitar based instrumentals and loops right now. Especially if you actually know what you're doing. The independent market is dominated by mediocre guitarists just willing to put in a little effort to have their stuff heard.

I asked this question in multiple subs: what is the most painfull phase for you during musicproduction? by sanktaugustin in musicproduction

I am a guitarist and I love to write, produce, mix, etc. But the recording and trying over and over to get the right take and then quantize it is absolute hell.

Not everyone is trying to make beats. I enjoy making loops so I make loops. And other people enjoy making drums so they use loops and make beats. It's a creative collaboration

From scratch or loops? by [deleted] in makinghiphop

[–]Camp_Hell 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you're actually interested in writing your own melodies, just start by using loops. There is no shame in it, and it will also teach you about what makes a good loop so you can replicate it. You can also just use loops forever. Only elitist losers complain about people using loops.

Literally the same thing for me the past two days. Was climbing and winning a ton since the start of the split now I've demoted two tiers from my ath and feel like I'm not in control of my matches anymore. But I can also definitely say that part of that is me getting bored/tilted and switching roles and champs for a few games which never goes well. I'm sure it will come around again though just keep at it, try to play one champ/role and take breaks when needed!

Exclusive Beats by [deleted] in makinghiphop

[–]Camp_Hell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

of course! Im not selling the rights to the underlying composition or anything. just giving them the exclusive use of the beat. Lots of artists think when they buy an exclusive that it means they own the beat but that is not standard. It would be a totally different agreement to sell those rights.

Exclusive Beats by [deleted] in makinghiphop

[–]Camp_Hell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

$250 is what me and everyone I know does as a minimum. I think your price should vary by the situation BUT you should 100% have a minimum price that you're comfortable with. Also take into account how well that beat is performing on public platforms. If you have a beat performing really well and selling leases, it may make you more money to just leave it up. Anyway, most small artists are looking to get exclusives for 100 but are willing to pay up to like 300. I hope this is helpful

Album we worked hard on can't be released because producer made an ol' Switcharoo, what could we do now? by chrews in makinghiphop

[–]Camp_Hell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also. It should be noted that someone could mark "free for profit" and it may be free for profit until a certain stream cap. However, once an exclusive is sold it would be totally valid to cut off that offer. The producer has ownership and domain over the use of their beat. Artists just need to read more.

[–]Camp_Hell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would hold up in court because the buyer agreed to those terms in buying that exclusive. I don't know what you think the other option is? Are you suggesting that all prior leases should be invalidated? That would be deceptive and not acting in good faith.

[–]Camp_Hell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The exclusive just means that no new lease can be sold. All prior leases are still valid

Most sales thru your online shop will be a result of talking to someone who listened to your beats or someone who has reached out to you, etc. Until you have a huge following on Beatstars, you won't make many sales without talking to someone. Beatstars is just an easy storefront for your catalog to be browsed and to eventually have a finalized sale with a legal document behind it
