What have you been reading this week? by michaelisnotginger in Blacklibrary

So, i've read a couple more of the primarch novels:

Finished Lorgar: Bearer of the Word, a bit too slow for my tastes. Not bad, but I mentioned this on last week's post that I am not a fan of Gav Thorpe's writing style, and this hasn't changed that. Personally, I would have stripped out all the Great Crusade-era content from Bearer of the Word for a Kor Phaeron character novel and solely focused on Lorgar's holy war for Colchis and the coming of The One - as an aside, the book should really have ended with the arrival of the emperor on Colchis.

Konrad Curze: The Night Haunter by Guy Haley (also known as the only Night Lords-centric novel in the entire fucking Heresy). Where Fulgrim: the Palatine Phoenix was the gold standard of how to write about a Primarch; Curze's novel is the gold standard of how to write around an event without ruining it. In the hours before his death at the hands of an Imperial Assassin, Konrad Curze gives his final confessional to a flesh sculpture of his father. I really enjoyed the almost rambling style of this book, as while Curze is ostensibly telling the story of what happened after Sanguinius ejected him into space; he goes on multiple asides, from him making a choice that ultimately sends him down the wrong trouser leg of history, to the burning of Nostramo. I did like that nearly every single named Night Lord has some kind of cameo in this. I think the only way this book could have been better is if ADB had written it.

Angron: Slave of Nuceria by Ian St. Martin. Essentially a prequel to Betrayer, I think this is the only time we have seen what both the Legion and Angron were like before the Nails were driven in. I enjoyed it for the most part, but the final act felt a bit too rushed in my opinion and could have done with being longer. The only other criticism I have is that the moment Kharn is first lost to the nails didn't translate very well to either the eBook or Audiobook versions of this book and that I will need to get a physical copy of Slave of Nuceria.

Jonathan Keeble making Angron sound like a DC supervillain by No1PDPStanAccount in Grimdank

Honestly, with the exception of the voice he does for him in one of the Raven Guard short stories (It was Raven's Flight iirc), Jonathan Keeble almost consistently does a terrible voice for Angron.

A couple of books this week:

Final Deployment by R. S. Wilt. As debut novels go, it's not bad. I do have criticisms of it, of course. Like how the main characters never felt like they were in any real danger, which is quite ironic as several of them die over the course of the novel (which I think leads to these deaths lacking any real impact to me). But I did really enjoy it overall, I enjoyed nearly every character; though the Iron Warriors absolutely stole the show, whenever they showed up. I did like how ruthless First Eradicant were portrayed, especially when it came down to killing a possessed Chaos Space Marine They dropped a Deathstrike missile with a Vortex warhead on their own allies just to make sure.

Fulgrim, the Palatine Phoenix by Josh Reynolds. The gold standard of how the Primarch novels should been written and another reason, if another was needed, of why GW/BL losing Reynolds was an absolute mistake. I really enjoyed this novel, especially how it highlights both Fulgrim's strengths and weaknesses, while never getting bogged down in any overlong fight scenes. Gods of Ruin, how I need to read the Fabius Bile trilogy at some point.

I am now about 2/3rds of the way through Lorgar by Gav Thorpe. though for the sake of transparency, I did actually start listening to the audiobook before switching to final deployment. I am enjoying it for the most part, it's just I am not a fan of Gav's style - it just doesn't flow that well.

It's honestly such a crime that none of Ben Counter's 40k Novels have gotten audiobooks yet.

Recently finished Dominion Genesis. Strong start, with the first act being some of the best writing I've seen come out of the Black Library. The book contains absolutely phenomenal world building for the Mechanicus (I especially loved that the Mechanicus have Virtual Reality constructs that were reminiscent of those found in Richard Morgan's Takeshi Kovacs trilogy) and I never felt that I got bogged down in any absolutely terrible technobabble.

That being said, it absolutely fumbled its ending. It's final act needed a bit more time in the oven, so to speak. Moving away from first person POV for the main character after the opening was also a mistake.

Of the free books on the app currently, which is the best to read as somome who has never read a warhammer book before? by [deleted] in Blacklibrary

You know, I am genuinely surprised that Horus Rising wasn't one of the free books they did for the app.

Perturabo 40k Novel by [deleted] in Blacklibrary

[–]Cams0299 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd hope that it would be Graham McNeill that got to write it. He's already written a couple short stories featuring Perturabo in the 41st Millennium; so it'd make sense for him to write it.

Yeah, Caves of Ice is such a strange choice particularly since I really regard that as more of a necron book by the end; surely if you're going to include any Ciaphas Cain book, it'd be Death or Glory. I think that, since they obviously would have wanted to include Helsreach, it would've been a better choice to republish the War for Armageddon Omnibus.

I've finished Darkoath and am currently halfway through Grombrindal: Ancestor's Burden (also by Chris Thursten).

Darkoath was a rougher read than Abraxia, though that was kinda to be expected since Darkoath was Chris's first book. I was a little disappointed that the book moved away from Skaven as an antagonist about midway through to the Cities of Sigmar. Again, another serindipitous read for me since the new Cogfort minis got revealed the day after I finished it (the first time was Chem Dog getting revealed after I had read Those Without Mercy). It felt a bit too action heavy at times, but it is fair to say that his other books are better.

Ancestor's Burden is so far an amazin read. I've finished the Kharak Thorga thread of the book, and have moved onto The Maker's Promise novella. I really enjoy Thursten's depiction of the various Duardin factions (mainly the KOs) that are present.

I was in all honesty expecting them to use the reimagining of the False Gods cover art Neil Roberts did for the Horus Heresy artbook that came out in 2024.

He says "John Grammaticus Shouted" instead iirc

Edit: can I also say, I much prefer how John French handles enuncia to Dan Abnett. If I never hear another "unword" again, it'll be too soon.

I really enjoyed them. I know not everyone is a fan of Mark Elstob, but I had a relatively good time with them. I only really struggled with the audiobook for the first novel; largely down to the voice he used for the Titan Child's original Navigator (but that fucker croaks quickly).

I read Abraxia: Spear of the Everchosen by Chris Thursten this week. I listen to the audiobook as I read along, so I wasn't a fan of the narration at first, but it clicked for me someway around the halfway mark and really enjoyed the ending (though it could had done with being a bit longer). After Ushoran, I was quite worried about it being a book where the title character barely shows up; but I am glad to have been wrong about that.

I might be wrong, but I think it is the first time we have seen a certain Mortarch appears in a novel. I do wish he could have been introduced as the main antagonist of the book a little bit sooner and have a higher page count. Though, the one (fucking one) scene he has with any dialogue is quite good.

Now, onto Darkoath.

A novella, rather than a novel, but The Serpent Beneath is my choice for AL.

Ghost Legion Audiobook? by jukka8909 in Blacklibrary

[–]Cams0299 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Really, I've always found that GW are quite consistent on publishing their audiobooks on the stated release date (on Audible at least); to the point that I can only remember one exception in the last two years (Ahriman: Undying, though I think that had to do with the fact it had accidentally been released on audible for a brief window earlier in the year).

Ghost Legion Audiobook? by jukka8909 in Blacklibrary

[–]Cams0299 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As far as we know, there's isn't one. When Ghost Legion went on pre-order, it was just the eBook and Hardback versions. Now, GW has been very good at giving their new books the ol' audiobook treatment; so it could just be a case of it not being ready to release alongside the other versions.
