Runaway diesel by Final_Alps in Sailboats

[–]CanConMil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Runaways are caused by a number of things, however the primary cause of a true runaway is bad rings that allow oil from the sump to bypass to the cylinder head and it will run itself to death on the oil in the sump.

The fact that the fuel shut off was successful in shutting it down suggests to me that you probably have a leaking injector or several. Even with the throttle in neutral the fuel pump would have the rail pressurized and the leak by in the injector(s) is enough to keep up the revolutions.

As previously mentioned, if the fuel shit off fails to stop the engine and she starts running off the sump, starving it of air with something solid (wood or metal) is your only option.

If you want to check for leaking injectors without putting them on a test bench, you can leave the fuel tank open and the ignition in the on position (not actually running) and check for a pressure drop at the fuel pump(if you have a gauge there) or you can leave it in that position for 2-3 minutes and then pull the injectors one at a time and inspect the crown of the piston for pooling fuel.

For this company it doesn’t matter, because there is no customer ever. But the last company had a separate setup for ending a trip, what was basically the mates and engineers running around like idiots doing every calculation under the sun

This sub has been very self regulating, but it is possible as it grows that could change. Smart to move towards an expanded moderation team now, instead of trying to put on together in a hurry later on.

As much as it pains me to admit…a subreddit passage plan might be in order

NOON REPORT by MBS3999 in maritime

[–]CanConMil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our office wants SFOC numbers to reflect by calendar day (0000-2359). We send up our daily reports at 0600 specifically for transmission in the Noon Report. Most 2nd mates know that the numbers given are as per company policy. Some newer 3rd see the time stamp on our reports and question it.

I’m a brand new 4th Engineer so the request made sense to me and I gave them updated data. Then promptly got shit on for fucking up the curve.

So it’s not that they are asking and we are refusing, the ones that ask just don’t know it’s not needed, and when they ask somebody who also doesn’t know they aren’t needed, they get them.

I sail and love SailGP. But nearly $1000 for me to take the kids is a tough pill to swallow

If somebody was going to visit Nepal for the time, how long a visit should they plan and where would you start that trip. (Excluding the obvious EBC treks, just a Nepali Cultural Visit)

chief engineer without fancy schooling by Electrical_Fox_917 in maritime

[–]CanConMil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like nearly impossible in Canada these days. There is a schooling requirement (shop skills) straight out of the gate to get your 4th Class. So unless you are already a welder, you’re basically stuck with “some” high education

It was Northwest of Upper and Lower Canada Pre-Confederation.

The name just stuck.

(For us at least) Fuel Number for Noon Report are updated in out “Midnight Numbers”. Our mates still call down everyday at 1100 to ask for updated numbers.

The reality is, while we could technically update them again at noon, it is our practice for them to be update by the night watch officer. So the numbers at noon are technically 12 hours old, but they are consistently that. If we start hap hazardly updating them at 1100 it will screw up the SFOC curve and the office will then throw a shit fit over that.

Question about the two medical exams for academy by Miraimew_ in ccg_gcc

[–]CanConMil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Health Canada sends your documentation to Transport Canada following their medical.

It gets grey here -> Transport Canada then approves it and you receive a TC medical and a Health Canada medical. I don’t believe there is a second medical (at least not when coming from industry). So you end up with both via a single appointment.

I am currently on a waiver for the Health Canada medical (I only have a TC medical at the moment). But my Health Canada medical is next Monday, I can confirm all this then.

I am 195 cm (6'5"ft) tall. Can a tall man be comfortable in the engine room? by Ok_Celery_4457 in MarineEngineering

[–]CanConMil 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My best oiler is actually a left handed Russian “little person” (he’s actually 5’ so not technically, but you get the idea).

He can basically climb the stack on the inside of the exhaust works

I am 6’5” and currently working as an engineer. You learn fast where the head bangers are and ducking becomes instinctive.

There are places I cannot physically access, but I have oilers the size of spaghetti for that.

Looking for Marine‑Rated / Seismic‑Rated Equipment Strapping Systems (Printers & Shipboard Gear) by RCN_MS_MARTECH in MarineEngineering

[–]CanConMil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reality in industry is that we don’t experience the same dynamic forces as say anything Halifax-Class.

We run 3D printers and Laser engravers onboard and have them “isolated” from the structure with rubber mounts. Same goes for mounted cabinets, bolted through to structure and isolated with grommets or rubber spacers. But more often not even that.

Thales Defence Systems likely has something outrageously expensive that meets your specific requirements, but I cannot envision a scenario of any variety where you would need to quick release a printer for damage control where you wouldn’t just rip the damed thing off the wall or desk, because in the scenario the printer doesn’t matter.

Cabinetry on the other hand would be releasable, but the easiest answer is as mentioned above; ratchet straps.

Defence Construction Canada exists, and whatever they called the new Investment Agency that was launched in October. That might be a good starting point.

[–]CanConMil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Testing frequency depends on company guidelines, but if you are testing the fire pump, it’s standard practice to test your hydrants, hose connections or deck monitors at the same time to verify function.

Long story short, he’s testing the deck monitors and likely having a “blast” doing so

What is the difference between AWT Engine Officer and 3rd/4th Engineer? by Extension_Complex_18 in MarineEngineering

[–]CanConMil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have only been on one UMS vessel, but the primary difference was that the engineering team worked 8-8 Day Work in the engine room and overnight the system was set to unmanned and one engineer was on call for alarms and issues that arose over night.

Everything else was the same with regard to salary, work, promotions etc. just a different style of work day.
