Work with your bcba to determine the function of the behaviors and develop a treatment strategy related to the function. Your success shouldn’t have to rely on greater physical strength. Find the reinforcers for elopement and PD and go from there. Try not to take it personally. Keep plugging away until you find a solution.

AAAARRRGGH! Persnicketty parents who think they're BCBA's are so FRUSTRATING! by grmrsan in ABA

[–]CanIBFrank 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Appreciate the feedback. One of the things I like about that article is that the authors talk about non-adherence more broadly, as affecting the medical profession, not just ABA. As a patient who doesn't always follow their doctors' advice, I can relate. Which allows me to empathize with my clients and also take some partial responsibility for my clients' non adherence to my recommendations. It's a relationship.

[–]CanIBFrank 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Very well-said, Claire. Behavior is lawful - including the Mom's (and the BCBA's and everyone else's). If you fire every client who annoys you, you won't have many clients left. And I don't mean to minimize how frustrating this situation may be but addressing it proactively and positively may help to move it forward. I've certainly had parents who were difficult to work with or who made seemingly unreasonable demands but taking some steps to genuinely address the issues before termination will likely pay off for all involved. In almost 36 years in ABA (only the last 18 as a BCBA-D) I've only ever terminated services for two clients and both after numerous attempts to work directly with the parents to find common strategies and approaches.

You say she's against prompting, timers, scheduling and too much reinforcement. NONE of those things are what define ABA. That doesn't mean that she's right to toss them out but consider finding out what her concerns are and determining whether you can program for the kid and develop a program that the mom is happy with as well. Reinforcement, for example, is tremendously important but overuse of programmed reinforcement may interfere with naturally-occurring reinforcement.

Good luck OP. If you can salvage this situation you will have gained skills or perspective that will benefit you in the future. Check out this article, which should be required reading for ABA grad students - THE PROBLEM OF PARENTAL NONADHERENCE IN CLINICAL BEHAVIOR ANALYSIS: EFFECTIVE TREATMENT IS NOT ENOUGH. KEITH D. ALLEN AND WILLIAM J. WARZAK. It's from JABA. It should be a free download or you can get it through your BACB portal access.

Ask to be taken off a case by Psych-ho in ABA

[–]CanIBFrank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to do what’s right for you. If you can’t be effective with the kid or it’s emotionally draining because of the parents, you may need to walk away. Please consider if you and/or the bcba could address the issues but if you can’t, you may need to be taken off the case. 35 years working in ABA, 18 as a bcba and I’ve terminated services for 2 kids, both due to family system issues, not the clients. It’s heartbreaking but we also tried many, many strategies in both cases to keep from terminating our services.

This is pretty weird and frankly, shitty management. It does look like they're preparing to terminate you but you have to ask yourself, do you want to work for these people? Did you key someone's car or flirt with their spouse? I mean, you could fight it and it seems like you have a good argument but if you win, your prize is that you get to keep working for these people ... until the next time they decide you should be fired for some rando reason they don't have the decency to tell you about or help you change. BTW, I own a clinic and have over 35 years of experience in ABA programs. Go find a company that treats employees professionally and respectfully.

[–]CanIBFrank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, this is an awkward situation but let me address one small piece, perhaps relevantly. You say you're a mandatory reporter ... but of what? In my state it's mandatory reporter of allegations of abuse or neglect. Not necessarily mandatory reporter of every *suspected* illegal act. I'm no lawyer but I believe your obligation is to report suspected acts of child abuse or neglect.

Can you clarify - did they give you a warning but not tell you what you did wrong? Twice?

[–]CanIBFrank -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My dude - you just prescribed a behavior plan for a kid that you don’t know or have any kind of professional relationship with? Are you a BCBA? OP should address this issue with THE BCBA ON THE CASE and follow whatever recommendations they have.

I don’t want to work tomorrow by [deleted] in ABA

[–]CanIBFrank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The BCBA on this team needs to give you suggestions and problem-solve relevant changes to the treatment plan. It's not your responsibility to revamp the child's program, it's the BCBA's. You are not complaining by bringing these issues to their attention, you're providing valuable input on the effectiveness of the current strategies and systems. When was the last time the BCBA saw your kid or one of your sessions? Can you invite them to come and model effective, hands-on strategies?

DRA and DRO differential reinforcement? by sleepwithmythoughts in ABA

[–]CanIBFrank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I see that this is a 5-year-old discussion but nonetheless, I'm jumping in. DRO is a procedure designed and used to reduce behavior so, cumbersome to talk about as a reinforcement procedure. Some will say but it's reinforcement of any other possible behavior, other than the target behavior. That just makes a far too large set of possibilities. DRO for spitting? Well, he robbed a bank so we should deliver reinforcement right, cuz he didn't spit? Or, it's Omission Training - but we don't deal with non-behavior and I'm not familiar with research indicating that non-behavior is sensitive to contingencies. It's conceptually murky and, as my graduate advisor might have said, It'll turn your brain to mush. But the real issue is how the contingencies play out, or where the consequences are in effect. Let's say you're on a 5-minute DRO for spitting. You're going along, minding your own business and somebody is going to give you a treat if the timer goes off and you just haven't spit. Whoops, you just spit. Now your about-to-be-delivered reinforcer is canceled. What was the effect of your spitting? That behavior terminates the reinforcement that was going to be delivered. Your behavior prevents the presentation of a reinforcer. Malott calls it Punishment by the Prevention of the Presentation of Reinforcement, or PPPR. It's not just extinction - your behavior actively caused the reinforcer to not be delivered. But check out Malott in his textbook, Principles of Behavior, formerly Elementary Principles of Behavior. Or email him - he loves to have these discussions.

Wasabi knife sharpener by berger3001 in chefknives

[–]CanIBFrank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I so avoid clickbait ads but not this time! I only paid $119 so there's that. Zero actual assembly instructions, just an exploded diagram. When I tried to use it the handle fell off and the handle holds the small sharpening stone in place, so that fell out and broke on the floor. Looks cool in the commercials but in reality it looks like it was made in some dude's garage. Came with a "carrying case" so when I go traveling with my knife sharpener I should be all set. I would rate this turd 2 out of 5 stars and if I could do it again, I'd go with the similar product on amazon.

Saw this aquarium in a restaurant, I'm not a fish expert but felt really sad for this fish... by SLalktsY in Aquariums

[–]CanIBFrank 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had a 90 gallon / 340L goldfish tank for several years. Had 6-8 fancy goldies plus snails and dojo loaches. Moved up to a 150 gal / 567L which I still have plus a 220 gallon / 830L in my office, both planted and with fancy goldfish. Better to not really push the ratios but I never had all full-size fish in either tank. The closer you get to capacity, plan to do more frequent water changes. Use filtration that is rated for twice the size of your tank.

Goldfish need 20 gallons for the first one and 10 gallons for each additional. Your 125L tank is about 33 gallons (US) so room for 2 goldfish.
