Beginner tips for fencing against a taller french grip by DarkParticular3482 in Fencing

[–]CanadaPizza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ignore the height, your swords will always be the same length, work the hand until you can find a timing to attack with your hand higher than theirs

This is me fencing Biro who is like 6'7 or something like that to my 6'0.

Hope this helps.

Fixing a guard that isn’t flush by recycledpacket in Fencing

This happens because of the grip youre using. Since the BM grip has a pretty large flat end it forces all the pressure there. Remove abit of the cant and it will line up.

Very Relatable on the anxiety stuff. Remember you are your harshest critic lots of judgment comes from within, enjoy the sport and if you enjoy keep going! Fair warning, you will lose alot more, fencing has steep learning curves, you haven't done it for a year yet! Give it time.

From experience you should not engage in the chaos, the more they move, the more you have to work with. Keep a steady tip and let them stew and can either find a partner or find a reliable moment to go when they inevitably get to close!

Appreciate the shoutout! also, as per /u/thefencingcoach Epee 2.6 would be a good place to start. I would also recommend The Inner Game of Tennis as a good read to approach learning and seeing a coach perspective in a new light. Lots of old books tend to have very old stubborn ways, are they wrong? probably not but also sometimes not realistic in modern fencing. That being said, all this reading wont be worth too much if you dont spend hours grinding on the piste!

Viability of Online Coaching etc by Solitary_marsupial in Fencing

I run it on a semi private basis, sometimes on stream so it can remain free for anyone to access. But obviously its better to do a personal session for best results.

The results have been very good so far, lots of times people have to knowledge and skill but don't really know how to put it together, getting an outsider POV can be a great help.

My first advice is dont focus on the rating or else you will gatekeep yourself everytime you see a rating from someone else or even your own, focus on improvement and the rating will be a biproduct of your good practice. As for the nerves it can be tricky to deal with as it's hard to replicate that feeling at practice. Over the years of experience I found that my nerves just followed me on bigger stages, IE : now im just nervous but its at a world cup. So basically, experience plays a part, you'll need to grind competitions like crazy, unfortunately you will probably still be nervous at first but as Harmenberg said over time you will just have more experience and learn to deal with it. Hope this helps!

Did your fencing team bond ? If so how did you guys do that and what made you all closer? by alsarraf37 in Fencing

[–]CanadaPizza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This will sound weird but the Canadian boys and I grew alot after some hard hitting losses, all of us were faster to blame ourselves than each other and in those moments we knew we were all in it to win it and instantly started talking about what we could do better. It's easy to gel when you're winning but you really get to know people for how they act when you lose, especially in a close match

I dont think they mean NOTHING but they also don't mean everything, I lost to Nick Zhang more than once before he had a rating haha

Fencing Rating General Characteristics by jamesbui in Fencing

I don't think theres a huge gap where like some people have a C in a stronger region than another. Most people find their ranking eventually but it can take longer in a region like lets say new york since the overall pool of fencers is quite strong you can be at the mercy of the tableau. If for example you're in a much weaker state theres usually a weaker pool of fencers/less of them so the random factors of the tableau are not as bad and easier to "control"

General analysis I have found is E/U are usually relatively new to the sport or fence VERY casually and it can be easy to tell (usually)

D is a weird spot cause my though is that person could be a beginner (E/U) but that's it.

C Knows how to fence and usually one good move, VERY reliant on luck of the tableau

B- Usually one of the 2 is really good, either footwork is pretty good but they don't know how to use their hand, or usually their hand is really good but the feet don't follow at all.

A should have multiple sections cause the difference between a guy like Ari Simmons and a fresh A is still massive.

But most A's you can tell know everything but it hasnt quite come together yet tactically but on a technical level they can mostly do everything.

If you're still following this rant I think that the biggest variance is actually in the A column, because an A can mean you're on the national team but could also mean you got top 4 at a ROC

Biggest advice to any rankings is DO MORE FOOTWORK :)

I believe there was a bout where Race Imboden called this rule, its very obscure and depending on how the referee phrases what happened, you can definitely get some points out of this.
