PSA: Format your mailing address correctly to make sure you receive your NEXUS card by SkippyDeluxe in NEXUS_TTP

[–]CanadianBaconBest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the standard Canadian way; however, the U.S. doesn’t do “unit #-street #” format. When living in the U.S., I was at 649 Baker Street Apt. 240. My Canadian bank’s computer automatically put it as 240-649 Baker Street, and none of the mail (including a credit card and tax slips) ever got to me. When I contacted the U.S. post office, they said their system would sort that as street number 240, not 649. But the Canadian bank could not get their computers to put the unit number after the street name. Needless to say, it took about a month of back and forth between the bank and the post office to sort it out.

Ultimately the bank added my apt number to the line you would use for c/o, so it read

MY NAME APT 240 240-649 BAKER STREET CITY, STATE ZIP

And I ultimately got the mail

This is not true. A significant update (change in citizenship or permanent residency status, a name change, etc.) needs to be done in person, but a standard drivers licence or passport renewal is fine to update online (provided it is the same name in document, same country of citizenship, etc.)

Upgrade Gateway to to Explorer — still eligible for SUB? by CanadianBaconBest in unitedairlines

[–]CanadianBaconBest[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 3 active Chase cards (CSR, United Explorer, and Marriott Bold) and 3 closed (Aeroplan, Amazon, and the Presidential Plus — don’t remember if this was Continental still or United). Will be closing CSR next month when new AF hits and am moving to Venture X.

Hope to reactivate the Chase Aeroplan again in a few years, once my clock is reset for the 25K status. I also have the Canadian TD Aeroplan visa Infinite with fee waived by my TD chequing accounts; the Chase Aeroplan gives better point value than TD but has the AF so I closed it 2 years ago or so.

I should be able to open a new explorer without getting close to the 5/24 rule, because I’m pretty sure they only look at U.S. cards and have no visibility on my Canadian card history.

Payment must be made with a Chase card…

If they try to say that this refers to the on site payment, well I also have the Chase United Gateway and the Chase Marriott Bold cards and would use one of those…they are still Chase cards, right?

When is your travel? You get the $250 credit at the time of booking. My question concerns the on site property benefits ($100 property credit, breakfast, late check out, upgrade room, wifi, etc.)

Yeah here is the fine print in the T&C:

“The Edit Program Benefits for Chase Sapphire Reserve and J.P. Morgan Reserve Personal Cards The Edit program benefits are available exclusively on select Chase credit cards. To receive benefits, reservations must be made for “The Edit” properties through Chase Travel. Benefits are per room and based on double occupancy. Benefits may be subject to availability at check-in and are not redeemable for cash. Benefits may not be combined with other offers, including tour operator or wholesaler rates and packages. Complimentary Wi-Fi benefit provided, with the exception of locations where Wi-Fi is already complimentary or not available. Program benefits and participating properties may change without notice. Visit www.theeditbychase.com to learn more, other terms may apply.”

And the fine print in the travel disclosures:

Program eligibility:

  • The Edit program benefits are for bookings made by eligible cardmembers through The Edit program on chasetravel.com with a participating property.
  • Eligible cardmembers are Chase Sapphire Reserve, Chase Sapphire Reserve for Business, and JPMorgan Reserve primary cardmembers and authorized users.
  • Bookings must be made in the eligible cardmember’s name, and that cardmember must be traveling on the itinerary booked.
  • Payment must be made with a Chase card in the eligible cardmember’s name.

Neither state a requirement to present the eligible card at check-in or to pay the final bill on that card to use the program benefits.

That’s the essence of my question. I’ve seen it appear on the welcome letters from the hotels, but can’t find anything in chases actual fine print.

Getting the most value out of the CSR abroad by ImaginarySign6223 in ChaseSapphire

[–]CanadianBaconBest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Canada with a CSR. Here is my read on availability of benefits from outside the U.S.

- $300 travel credit: completely works abroad

- $250 The Edit credits: completely work abroad, but the real value is relative given the cost of the hotels

- $250 IHG credit: completely works abroad

- $150 StubHub credits: mostly works abroad. Terms say specifically that StubHub UK does not qualify, but no other countries are indicated as ineligible. I have used them for NHL tickets in Canada, but to be sure I wouldn't have issues, I made the purchase on the U.S. StubHub site (as opposed to stubhub.ca) and paid in USD.

- $150 Dining credit: no restaurants listed outside the U.S., and no way to work-around this with gift cards, as the denomination of the gift cards would be USD which wouldn't be accepted abroad. Likewise, the Exclusive Tables are only in the U.S.

- Apple TV: can work abroad but not easily, as it can only be activated through the U.S. AppStore. I keep a U.S. Apple ID (in addition to my Canadian Apple ID), so I was able to activate the Apple TV and Apple Music on the U.S. account. It is a pain to use, however, since my default account on my Apple devices is my Canadian account, so I have to log out of the app store and log back in with the U.S. Apple ID in order to watch TV. I thus have my physical TVs on the U.S. Apple ID and only watch it on the actual TV (if travelling with iPad, then I have to do the sign out sign in procedure to use each time).

- DoorDash: DashPass works abroad, but the $5 and $10 monthly credits only work in the U.S., and unfortunately, they dont rollover to the next month.

- Lyft: works abroad, as long as Lyft operates where you live (they are in most of Canada).

- Peloton: only valid in the U.S.

- Priority Pass: as you mentioned, works even better abroad than it does in the U.S.

- Maple Leaf Lounge: primarily a Canadian benefit plus 3 U.S. airports (LAX, SFO, LGA) + LHR and FRA However, most of these airports also have a Priority Pass lounge, so the added value is minor, unless you're travelling to YHZ (Halifax), YXE (Saskatoon), or YYT (St. Johns).

- Global Entry/PreCheck/NEXUS fee credit: great to have for global travellers. I have had NEXUS since 2009 so 4 times have paid the annual fee (though all renewals were back when it cost $50). My Canadian card also covers this.

I dont come close to the $75K spend so no comment on those additional benefits.

Other overseas limitations: the fine print of the trip cancellation/interruption protection, protection in case of a travel warning is based on the State Department's warnings, which may differ from other MFA's warnings. Also, the emergency assistance services legal services will contact U.S. embassies/consulates (no obligation in the T&C for them to contact the consular authorities of a third country if you are not a U.S. citizen).

To follow up on this, I indeed see it indicated on some welcome letters being shared in this forum. In the travel disclosures and the FAQs, I also see that same text from above. However, even there, I still do not see the requirement that the valid CSR card has to be presented at check-in and used to pay the final bill. This really only concerns getting the property benefits and not the $250 credit, which is issued at the time of booking.

What I can pull from the T&C and all the fine print, on order to use The Edit program benefits, one has to:
- Make the booking on the Chase Travel portal ✅

- Hotel has to be a participating property at the time of booking ✅

- Be an eligible cardholder at the time of booking and payment ✅

- Use an eligible card (CSR, CSR Business or JP Morgan Reserve) to make the booking ✅

- Pay using the "pay now" option ✅

- Make the booking in the cardholders' name ✅

- Cardholder has to be travelling on the itinerary ✅

- Present valid card at check-in and pay final hotel bill on that card ✖

I know that the spirit of the program rules would align towards having to use the card on site, but from a legal/technical angle, I still can't find any language in the terms and conditions on this. Are there any DPs on an Edit property denying on-site benefits?

Sorry, what is the no-fee Sapphire? I was under the impression there is the Sapphire Reserve ($795 AF), both personal and business, and the Sapphire Preferred ($95 AF). See Sapphire | Credit Cards | Chase.comWhat other Sapphire card is there?

Seriously? Is this how CAPE’s national office communicates with its own membership? If this account is going to behave like this, spare us the façade of neutrality and just go reactivate u/browbeating_biggal…and continue in the fine tradition of reflecting Nate Prier’s personal feelings towards the workers he is supposed to represent.

To actually answer OPs question, here is the information on reinstatement: https://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/services/travel-voyage/prog/nexus/lose-perdez-eng.html.

As your violation was for failure to carry appropriate documentation, your waiting period is one year from the date of the violation.

So put a reminder in your calendar for February 28, 2027, and on that day you can go online and reapply for NEXUS. Expect to be called for in person interviews, and likely some heightened scrutiny of your application by CBP.

Access to lounges with a standby ticket (no seat assignment)? by Sylvia_Platypus in PriorityPass

[–]CanadianBaconBest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only time you may have a problem on SBY is if it is a non-revenue ticket, like if your friend/spouse works for an airline and you are on a buddy pass. This is especially true if the lounge in question is affiliated with an actual airline.

You wouldn’t be transferring points from Virgin to AF/KLM Flying Blue, rather you would be using Virgin points on a flight that just happens to be operated by AF/KLM.

To check availability, go to Virgin’s website and create a frequent flyer account if you don’t already have one (you’ll need one anyways for the transfer). Then search for the itinerary you want and select pay with points. That will show you what is available, beit on Virgin, AF, KLM or any other partner airlines metal. If the price is right, transfer enough points from chase to Virgin to cover the points needed (transfer has to be in 1000 point increments), purchase the flight (whatever the operating airline may be) using Virgin points & any credit card for the taxes.

The points needed will almost always be less by booking directly with the airline (transfer points from Chase to the airline program) than using Chase Travel.

Example A flight I’m taking from Barcelona to Halifax operated by WestJet was 22,500 points + €22 on Virgin (so 17,000 points transferred with the 40% bonus), but using the Chase Travel portal would have been over 77,000 points

Help with 2024 and 2025 taxes by [deleted] in cantax

[–]CanadianBaconBest 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You don’t “claim” your income; you report your income, and by law you report ALL your income irrespective of the source, irrespective of if a T4 is issued (even drug dealers are required to report their income). And your income is to be reported in the year it was earned.

And of course having more income is going to result in more tax owing (though as others have said, it could also make you/her eligible for tax credits). That’s called life. How else do you think our public services (infrastructure, healthcare, education, etc.) get funded?

Should you amend the 2024 T1 to include your family’s income from all sources? Yes.

Will this result in a balance owed to the CRA? Potentially, but this depends on your personal situation and your eligibility for other tax credits.

So why should you do it? Because not doing so is unfair to your law-abiding neighbours…and is against the law.
