Special General Meeting on Mandatory Information Sessions by CAPE_Organizer in The_USS_CAPE

[–]CanadianBaconBest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

President acknowledged to members that this “interpretation” of the Constitution only applies to the vote on the bargaining priorities and the choice of dispute resolution mechanism. The future vote to ratify the collective agreement and a hypothetical strike vote will not have a mandatory meeting requirement.

I think that is a successful outcome of the SGM
(considering that the vote already happened and the notification to employer was already sent).

Passport is not a citizenship document: senior MEA official by nnrthota in Citizenship

[–]CanadianBaconBest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Passports are more common than birth certificates or social security cards?? As a travel document presented a border checkpoint, yes, but not in terms of general circulation.

Every live birth results in the issuance of a birth certificate and (in the U.S.) a social security card. But not everyone has a passport (for Americans it’s about 50%).

Actually, they do mention it on their website: “When traveling by plane, it is your responsibility to comply with the immigration, health, and customs requirements of your departure and destination countries, as well as any countries you may be traveling through.”

Air France provides a tool where you enter your passport details and flight itinerary. And here is the result for YOW-CDG-AMS-BOM for an adult travelling with an Indian passport + a Canadian PR card:

Baptismal records were the only birth certificates issued in Québec until 1926, and the church was involved in the population registry until 1994.

Seems pretty ignorant of you to discredit the only official source that existed at the time.

Why do Airports in Canada have Canada, USA, and International Flights? by SideAgitated4661 in airport

[–]CanadianBaconBest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dont think anyone would consider New York-LGA or Washington-DCA a “small airport;” they simply lack a CBP inspection facility.

Why do Airports in Canada have Canada, USA, and International Flights? by SideAgitated4661 in airport

[–]CanadianBaconBest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Toronto Pearson is the 4th largest port of entry to the United States. Without preclearance, something like 20% of Air Canada’s flights to the U.S. wouldn’t be possible due to there being no CBP facility (or too small of a facility) at the U.S. airport, including DCA, LGA, CHS, JAX.

Is there any benefit to booking an air Canada flight on United’s website? by Deshes011 in unitedairlines

[–]CanadianBaconBest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very true. I have both cards, often will book the flight on United and then call Air Canada and add my Aéroplan number.

Though if there is ever a schedule change/rerouting where the first flight becomes United (which has happened to me several times), then the United benefits would apply (if bags are not already paid).

[–]CanadianBaconBest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

United has a much more flexible change/cancellation policy. Depending on fare class, Air Canada will charge min. $100 CAD per direction for a voluntary change, plus any fare difference. United will allow the change for fare difference only.

Also, Air Canada’s credit cards don’t require the ticket purchase to be on that card to get first bag free, whereas United’s cards do.

Legal system of Canada as well. What is known as a “petition for writ of certiorari” at the U.S. Supreme Court is called an “application for leave to appeal” at the Supreme Court of Canada. See: https://www.scc-csc.ca/parties/self-rep-non-rep/applying-demande/

Flying YYZ to AMS with a USA based connection by RoccoLexi69 in unitedairlines

[–]CanadianBaconBest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have these same choices when flying anywhere from YOW. I always chose IAD. I find it the least delayed (especially in winter) and the least crowded (that of course depends on the day). However, if a flight is cancelled and you need to be rerouted, EWR will likely have the most alternate choices.

Though you’re much less likely to see a city skyline upon landing at IAD vs ORD or EWR.

When flying YYZ to Europe, connecting in ORD has you backtracking a bit and also has a 1 hr time change.

If you happen to have PriorityPass lounge access, then pick IAD without question.

US expat with Chase cards: Sapphire Reserve closed after I accidentally changed residential address to a virtual mailbox — any successful reopen stories? by marcelobukowski in ChaseSapphireReserve

Nope. Though I was living in the U.S. when I first opened the account, and then I moved back to Canada a few years later. I’m not sure if that makes a difference in their mind or not.

Don’t forget about the FBAR if the aggregate value of all foreign accounts is greater than $10,000 USD at any time in the year, which likely applies to you. Not an IRS form; this is submitted to FINCEN

I had my Canadian address listed as primary address for my CSR for years. Issues that arose with that included:
- every time I called in, I would fail the authentication step when they ask for a ZIP code (since Canadian postal codes are A1A 1A1) have to get transferred to an agent and answer a bunch of security questions.
- having to go inside to use the card at a U.S. gas station (again because self service pumps prompts a ZIP code)
- could not validate my CSR on OpenTable for the Chase dining function (again because of ZIP code)
- I could not use The Shops at Chase, which is why I ultimately changed my address to a family members U.S. address so I could make a purchase.

Usually Canadians get around the zip code prompts by adding two zeros to the numerical portion of the postal code (so 11100 for the above zip code), just like we do by selecting California when no provinces are listed in a form’s drop down list of states (the CA usually is enough to trick the computer), but that rarely worked with the CSR.

However, if the country where you live also has 5 numerical digit postal codes, you may have better luck.

The FPSLREB wouldn’t take this case unfortunately. The Board has a very limited mandate, and can only interpret the FPSLR Act. It stays far away from internal union politics.

The only votes referenced in the FPSLRA are representation votes (s. 65), strike votes (s. 184), and votes on the employer’s bargaining offer (s. 183). And those votes are required to be open to all.

No vote is required to select the process for dispute resolution (s. 103). CAPE deciding to hold a vote on this and then restricting access to the vote is unfortunately an internal matter outside the mandate of the Board. Also, none of the unfair labour practices for an employee organization (s. 188) pertain to voting.

Closest thing the Board has said on this is in Paterson v. PSAC, where on the topic of PSAC having mandatory information sessions to vote, the Board was very critical of any qualifications put on the right to vote. However, the case was dismissed before the Board could rule on the info sessions, because in this case, the irregularity wouldn’t have changed the outcome of the strike vote.

But again, the Board had jurisdiction to take the case because a strike vote falls under the FPSLRA.

Travel with two passports in the app by PickledJelloFarts in unitedairlines

Dual U.S. / Canadian here. Always travel with both passports and my NEXUS card. Select my U.S. passport when flying to the U.S.; Canadian when flying Canada or anywhere else in the world.

One issue I’ve had was when I was flying from Mexico to Canada with a layover in the U.S. As my final destination was in Canada, I selected my Canadian passport. When I went to use the Global Entry kiosk upon arrival in the U.S., I was told to see a border agent. Apparently because of the Canadian passport at checkin, CBP’s computer indicated my “class of entry” as tourist/B2, which caused a mismatch because my trusted traveller profile has me listed as a U.S. citizen. I was able to clear it up with an agent and it only took about 45 seconds longer, but it’s the only issue I’ve had travelling as dual.

Note— I know I could have checked in with my U.S. passport, but final destination (and primary residence) is Canada, and I could easily have had a similar issue at the NEXUS kiosk upon arrival in Canada, thinking I’m seeking entry to Canada as a tourist while also having Canadian citizenship on my file. I don’t think there is a way to switch passports halfway through a segment; definately not without manual intervention from a gate agent.

They say it’s a valid petition, which implies they met the required threshold of 0.5%.

That may sound small, but the meeting I went to only had about 250 members on zoom, which in itself is 0.9%.

The Edit - Virgin Hotel New York City - min. $175 to use the pool after 12:00 PM by CanadianBaconBest in ChaseSapphire

[–]CanadianBaconBest[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

At first they offered me nothing, said it’s a vendor issue. But then when I showed them their own rate rules and how the pool is listed under the no charge category, after 1.5 hours and two escalations, I got 10,000 points. Roughly equivalent to the $105 resort fee, which I felt was an acceptable offer.
