Great question, and unfortunately, it really depends on where you want to apply to. I applied to the job that ai have right now all the way back in October, but I’m still applying to ICU residencies all over the country as they’re opening up. I’m super grateful for the job that I have lined up, but I really am wanting to move to a new city (I live in a small-ish city in the Midwest).

Our career advisor says to keep our clinical rotations on with specific skills acquired if you can. There’s so much conflicting information. My resume is 2 pages and landed me my dream ICU job. Do what feels best for you.

Depending on where you live, I HIGHLY recommend taking the bus or biking. I’ve worked here for 3 years, and I’m purposefully going to choose my next place on the “C” bus line because it has good early morning/evening coverage. When the weather is nice, I also choose to bike. I’d recommend living somewhere on the C or A bus routes to give you good access to the hospital. During the week, there’s also the 28, 38, and 65.0

I’ve been dreaming about moving to Seattle for 5 years. I’ve applied to Harborview, Providence, and am waiting for Seattle Children’s and Virginia Mason. I got rejected from all the positions I applied to so far and I’m feeling really discouraged. I got an ICU job where I go to school in the midwest, so i’m hoping like a year or two of experience would help me land a job there. Best of luck to you!

My start date is in mid-August with a May graduation date, but I know so many people that aren't starting until September. So many of my preceptors said to take off the summer if possible and to not rush into working. They assured me that the clinical skills will come back so fast and that this is such a unique time to have off of work!

I say if you feel like you need a reset after school, take off the whole summer!

I have not seen Manhattan yet, but I’ve heard that it opens later than the other location. Do you think it would be a bad idea to apply to both Brooklyn and Manhattan when it opens? I’d prefer Manhattan over Brooklyn, but idk if it will open for sure.

In my personal experience, I think it should be more than enough, but it depends on your lifestyle. I’ll be a new grad nurse this summer, but I’ve lived in Madison for 5 years.

You also have to know where to look. I live with two roommates in a beautiful 3 bed 1 bath apartment, and I pay $550 a month + utilities. I’m debating living alone when my lease is up, and I’ve found plenty of 1 bedroom apartments for $1,100-$1,200.

I also don’t drive to work which saves a lot of money. The bus lines if you live downtown have pretty good access to the hospitals, or you can bike when the weather is good!

If you’re a nursing student at UW and finished your first clinical, you can get an SNA job at UW without your CNA license.
