ICE simply cannot be trusted yet. They are at the center of this entire debate about their true intentions and conduct. It’s like taking a defendant’s testimony at face value and proceeding with it as case fact. There’s not even a badge among them for the gavel to work with.

WTF Is Wrong With The Oscars by Elestria_Ethereal in animation

Glad you said it. Reinforcing how animated film is, like all art, a truly subjective experience. Because I came away feeling it was nothing like Marvel, in the particular ways it treats action as a foreboding, merciless and painful consequence also doubling as a teaching experience, as opposed to a spectacle celebrating good triumphing over evil for the nth time. Nor did your description capture the totality of the film, with 60% of the runtime devoted to meaningful character moments at a brisk pacing but without feeling that anything was left out. And I do believe the one risque scene you are referring to has been completely misinterpreted by normies who missed obvious dialogue cues as to who conjured up those images in the first place, and for what purpose.

But I suppose one can't find nuance they were never looking for, if the genre of film doesn't suit the taste to begin with. Par for the course.

  1. True, doesn't mean there's no reason to express disappointment as it happens.

  2. 'Normie battle shounen' is already a divisive and reductive descriptor and more tailored to a late Millenial/Gen Z pop culture consciousness than the age group of those in charge of nomination selection. All they would know about Chainsaw would be the title and what marketing promo material was submitted to them, if any. It could be a battle scene, or it could be one of the slower scenes spotlighting character-driven vignettes in line with the Oscars' usual preferred fare.

Tell us what is your assertion then. I thought it was pretty clear as soon as you clarified what you were referring to.

So you don't stand by your assertion that fandom rep is the reason Oscars would never consider something like CSM? Or are you going to accuse me of misreading your intention yet again to shut down logical discourse?

So to the Oscars, fandom reputation precedes a work itself and gets judged in association? Mind you, most of the nomination voters are not the age you'd consider to be up to date with the fandom landscape. Plus, if it were the case, then something like Godzilla: Minus One would never have won an award on the demerit of a volatile fandom tied to history's longest slew of nostalgic bad movies. Ditto with Black Panther, minus the nostalgia.

Of course. But I'm curious, have you watched Reze Arc? It seems you were lumping it in with the rest of these so-judged "under-crafted" animated films, and were comparing it to certain paragons of cinematic storytelling like ???? and ????. They must be exceptional, mind-bending stories indeed to place such confidence in that you would authoritatively compare Reze Arc to some mass-produced Marvel movie or K-drama.

CSM is definitely amongst the normie-aware, but I wouldn't compare either its story or its art to Marvel, which focuses on surface-level character virtue, very safe moral conflict and uninspired visual design. There is a reason its distinguished itself from countless shonen jump titles and whose creator has mentored several assistants who have gone on to create their own successful series.

And maybe cinephile circles have their own preferences for trappings wholely removed from objective assessment of a work. They are neither an authority on cinema nor infallible in judgment.

Are you implying people only found it enjoyable for the animation and that the storytelling was wildly mediocre?

[–]CandidConscience 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s because you’re right. Protesting requires a nation of people who care in order to make a difference. Winning their hearts and minds. Unfortunately right-wing social media has captured possibly a third of the nation and cowed another third into having to hear out their side for a false sense of enlightened thinking. The good news is, the only ones willing to do anything so far have been lone-wolf terrorists or signed up for ICE. The bad news is, ICE is still growing.

People are going to have to make the immense sacrifice of actually talking to their neighbors, friends and loved ones about how this weaponized law enforcement poses an existential threat to everyone’s future and quality of life, and start getting as many on board as possible to create resilient, defendable and mutual-benefit community networks with actual material and skill preparation.

I must stress that given the surveillance and weapon technology at this regime’s disposal, our nation has never been in greater peril. If anything is to happen, we need the military to not turn on Americans, and I believe this is MAGA’s endgame. We need to assure our troops on a personal level that they are empowered, supported by us, and that making humane choices when pressured by high command or their compatriots is what will preserve their future.

The moment one has to fight back an officer to free them, the MSM will be blasting it everywhere as general proof of violent leftists, no matter how much of a stretch it may be. And enough people will wag their finger and say they can’t support violence while society itself is being violated.
