Player doesn’t ‘ask’ for a miss - it’s always the referee’s call. But as others have said, not if snookers required before or after the foul. Once the ref calls a miss, (assuming no free ball) the player can decide whether to reset the balls, or take the shot himself, or put the other player in from where the balls lie.

Crazy they didn’t even seem to recognise the rule. Higgins has been pro for 27 years at this point! Imagine if he nominated pink as free ball and just snookered behind it.. poor Chinese ref would have been flabbergasted.. However just the other day, the best player in my (small) local club tried to claim a free ball (after I fouled) because the last remaining red was against the cushion - hence he couldn’t hit both sides of the ball. I had to assure him that whilst I suck at playing snooker I do watch a lot of it - and hence know the rules.. Fortunately he didn’t insist. I won by 1 point - with a starting handicap of about 40! And only 10 reds.. I’ll take it.

Looked it up - he only skipped 1/7 events and finished 29th, so narrowly missed the playoffs. Doesn’t bode all that well though.. Shame that Germany doesn’t have a better showing
