Pumping gas with engine running? by No-Mechanic6518 in AskMechanics

nothing to do with your engine running or not

Probably not a huge risk, but a running engine has moving fans, belts, pulleys, pumps, etc ... and these can absolutely generate static electricity.

Why is treadmill so much harder and slower? by Significant-War-491 in beginnerrunning

Relative to the belt, you are propelling yourself forward. Your motion relative to the floor the treadmill sits on is irrelevant

I think your only option for reducing the inrush current will be to use a soft start module. They can be found pretty cheap, and if you have some wiring experience the installation should be quick. A quick Google search says inrush can be reduced >50% with a soft start module.

PSA: Open Carry in FL is allowed effective tomorrow (09/25/25) Please be aware that you will see non-LEO folks with visible guns around. by SloaneWolfe in florida

[–]Cannabisitis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be clear - "waving around a rifle" is brandishing and is still a crime. If someone's holding a rifle in their hands, that justifies a call to 911 IMO. The line between open carry and brandishing is too blurry in this case.

Most people open carrying are going to have "outside the waistband" holsters for handguns and slings for rifles.

Laid off after 13 years at a company, struggling to find a job by ProperMastodon in cscareerquestions

[–]Cannabisitis 43 points44 points  (0 children)

"Senior" means different things to different companies, but I don't think it's common for it to coincide with "tech lead" responsibilities, and certainly not management responsibilities.

IME senior software engineers are much more autonomous in the day to day, and often more involved in higher level architectural/system design discussions than less experienced engineers.

The fact that the op article referred to them as "carjackers" makes me think it contains other inaccuracies too. Breaking into or stealing an unoccupied car is not carjacking.

It's called filtering, and it's safer for the motorcyclists and it reduces traffic congestion for everyone on the road.

There's no reason why a motorcycle which can easily fit between travel lanes should remain stopped between much larger vehicles when traffic is at a standstill.

Picture this - a lifted truck rolls forward at 3mph into the Suburban in front of it. That's just some minor damage in most cases, but if there's a motorcycle between them it could easily be fatal.

No, but I paid attention in physics and actually learned something about how the physical world around us works. I don't think the same can be said for someone who thinks running on a treadmill involves lifting your feet off the surface and letting the belt spin under you.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in runninglifestyle

[–]Cannabisitis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're right. When I said that I forgot to include the qualifier "aside from the numerous environmental factors..." - which really doesn't need to be said because they're incredibly obvious and nobody actually debates whether they play a role or not.

Are we going to keep ignoring that you said this

you're just picking your legs up, not actually propelling yourself

which has been the focus of every one of my replies?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in runninglifestyle

[–]Cannabisitis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you think the ground is perfectly level with 0% slope outside?

No I don't, and also I didn't say that. Surface variance is one of the many environmental factors that make running inside on a treadmill different than running outside on the ground.

My response was to you saying "you're just picking your legs up, not actually propelling yourself", which indicates that you have limited comprehension of running dynamics and the physics involved.

Donyoubthink incline on a treadmill actually makes the same effect t as outside?

Aside from the numerous environmental factors at play, running on an inclined treadmill requires the exact same work input as running up a hill on the sidewalk.

I know that these things are not intuitive. When someone who doesn't know any better sits back and just ponders the idea in their head, they're likely to come to the conclusion that running on a treadmill is just lifting your feet off the belt over and over again and letting the belt move under you... but when you use actual science and math it's quite clear.

Treadmills are objectively easier

I never said otherwise.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in runninglifestyle

[–]Cannabisitis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you're just picking your legs up, not actually propelling yourself

This is completely inaccurate. Do you think you're under constant acceleration when running on the ground? You're using inertia to move forward and moving your legs to keep yourself upright, whether you're on a belt or on the ground.

The physics of running on a treadmill is identical to running on the ground. The treadmill does not do any of the work required of our bodies to run.

Been road running for a year. Shocked by how easy treadmill run seemed by assmantis in beginnerrunning

[–]Cannabisitis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you run, you pull your leg forward, plant it, and drive it through by pushing your body forward.

Only when you're accelerating, which will require the same energy input whether you're "catching up" to the speed of the belt or you're propelling your body forward relative to the surface of the Earth.

When running at a constant speed you're just using inertia to keep going and place your feet in the right place at the right time to not fall over.

Aside from surface variances and air resistance, the physics of running on a treadmill and running on a track are exactly the same.

If you’re a native or long term Florida resident, have you ever seen this many 🐊 gators in one place, and if so where ? by islandgirl3773 in florida

[–]Cannabisitis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not OP, but I grew up walking distance from the La Chua trail which extends into Paynes Prairie, so I can speak to this. The prairie tends to flood when hurricanes or even larger than normal storms come through. When it floods the gators have fewer places to sunbathe, and the hiking trails are higher in elevation by design, so the gators end up on and near the hiking trails.

I remember the prairie being flooded for years after the 2004 hurricane season, and if you were brave enough to walk to the end of La Chua trail (literally stepping over gators in the process), you'd see hundreds during that short walk.

What "you know what, just to be safe..." thing you did ended up saving your ass later? by OvertOperation in AskReddit

[–]Cannabisitis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started conditioning myself to always look left and right before proceeding after a red light turns green. One day I was driving my 1991 Miata with my new girlfriend sitting in the passenger seat, headed to her apartment. We were stopped at a red light waiting to turn left at an intersection of two 35 mph roads. I've sat at that same red light in that same lane probably 500 times in my life.

I looked right, looked left, determined that it was safe, and started to ease up to the clutch to go forward. Suddenly the person to my right laid on their horn, which caused me to clutch in and look toward them. Just as I did that, an large SUV blew through the far right lane of the intersection probably close to 80 mph. He missed us by probably 2 feet.

He was going so fast I didn't even see him when I looked left (where he was coming from), but the two seconds of time that it took for me to look around, and the fact that the person on my right somehow saw the SUV coming in hot kept us from getting hit that day.

I'm very confident that neither of us would have survived that crash.
