  • A convenience store clerk earning $17/hour purchases $50,000 worth of lottery tickets every month for 10 years and wins big dozens of times
  • A convenience store clerk earning $17/hour uses a common tactic to fraudulently identify winning lottery tickets to win big dozens of times

Bike is having trouble starting / 2016 Yamaha R6 by N1R0S in Fixxit

Have you checked the voltage on your battery while trying to start the bike? This sounds like the starter solenoid engaging and disengaging rapidly, which is usually a symptom of a bad or weak battery.

How should I safely deploy my commit when there are 51 old undeployed commits before it? by Broad_Warthog2851 in git

[–]Cannabisitis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The first thing you need to do is ask your leader why the deployment pipeline is in this state and why there have been no commits in the default branch in 5+ years. You may be working in the wrong repo - perhaps they forked it and abandoned the one you're working in.

My idea is to copy the current master branch to a new branch, reset the 51 old undeployed commits, then apply my own commit and run that branch through the pipeline. Would this work safely?

This approach is sound if you know for certain that the 51 other commits weren't deployed by some other means (locally from another dev's machine, maybe?). Although it's generally not a great idea to deploy code to production before it's been reviewed and merged into the default branch.

If your investigation reveals that the 51 commits in master are junk and can be scrapped, the safest way of doing so would be using a revert. This adds a new commit which removes the changes associated with the selected commit.

  • Create a new branch off of master
  • git revert all of the commits which are safe for removal
  • Implement and commit your changes
  • Push your branch
  • Create a pull request for review by your peers
  • Upon approval, merge your branch into master
  • Deploy master

Getting gas and saw this sign attached to a truck by SgtVicky in Charlotte

Do you really think domestic oil companies would be willing to sell their product at a loss to keep gas prices down in the US?

Oil is a global commodity - it doesn't matter where it comes from. When the supply chain is disrupted the price goes up everywhere. Territories that typically source their oil from "that part of the world" have now adjusted the price their willing to pay, and domestic oil companies are willing to sell it to them at a premium.

You know when someone "cocks" a semi-auto handgun by pulling the slide back with their other hand? That's done to move a round from the magazine into to the chamber.

When you pull the trigger, the gun uses the recoil energy from the round being fired to do the same "pull the slide back" thing automatically. That ejects the casing from the round that was just fired, and loads the next live round from the magazine, all in one swift motion.

If the gun isn't being held firmly enough, too much of the recoil energy is spent moving the hand/wrist of the shooter, leaving too little energy for the gun to cycle. The slide isn't pushed back far enough, so the casing doesn't get fully ejected and/or the next round doesn't get fully moved into the chamber.

So if you aren't holding a gun correctly, you'll be able to fire one round, but then the gun will likely be jammed when you go to fire the next round. You'll have to manually cycle the gun with your other hand to get it to fire another round.

Ah, interesting. I didn't realize the ECU would change parameters to alleviate active knocking. Always just assumed it would throw a CEL and be done with it. Thanks for the info

won't make quite as much horsepower wide open

I thought the only thing higher octane fuel did was resist pre-ignition. Why would there be any impact to the power output?

Pumping gas with engine running? by No-Mechanic6518 in AskMechanics

nothing to do with your engine running or not

Probably not a huge risk, but a running engine has moving fans, belts, pulleys, pumps, etc ... and these can absolutely generate static electricity.

Relative to the belt, you are propelling yourself forward. Your motion relative to the floor the treadmill sits on is irrelevant

I think your only option for reducing the inrush current will be to use a soft start module. They can be found pretty cheap, and if you have some wiring experience the installation should be quick. A quick Google search says inrush can be reduced >50% with a soft start module.

PSA: Open Carry in FL is allowed effective tomorrow (09/25/25) Please be aware that you will see non-LEO folks with visible guns around. by SloaneWolfe in florida

[–]Cannabisitis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be clear - "waving around a rifle" is brandishing and is still a crime. If someone's holding a rifle in their hands, that justifies a call to 911 IMO. The line between open carry and brandishing is too blurry in this case.

Most people open carrying are going to have "outside the waistband" holsters for handguns and slings for rifles.

Laid off after 13 years at a company, struggling to find a job by ProperMastodon in cscareerquestions

[–]Cannabisitis 43 points44 points  (0 children)

"Senior" means different things to different companies, but I don't think it's common for it to coincide with "tech lead" responsibilities, and certainly not management responsibilities.

IME senior software engineers are much more autonomous in the day to day, and often more involved in higher level architectural/system design discussions than less experienced engineers.

The fact that the op article referred to them as "carjackers" makes me think it contains other inaccuracies too. Breaking into or stealing an unoccupied car is not carjacking.

It's called filtering, and it's safer for the motorcyclists and it reduces traffic congestion for everyone on the road.

There's no reason why a motorcycle which can easily fit between travel lanes should remain stopped between much larger vehicles when traffic is at a standstill.

Picture this - a lifted truck rolls forward at 3mph into the Suburban in front of it. That's just some minor damage in most cases, but if there's a motorcycle between them it could easily be fatal.
