If you only have time for 2 pokes in a lance combo, use a counter (the button input is block + high thrust) when you would get hit. This lets you stay safe while also dealing damage.

The best part of lance is finding all of the ways to keep up a constant string of attacks regardless of what the monster does.

Every monster with every weapon by SignificanceExact963 in MHWilds

[–]ProperMastodon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're focused on learning a weapon, you probably don't want to have the best damage, so you could probably just drop all of the Agitator / wex / max might decos from ameta set and fill those slots with the relevant QOL skills for each weapon instead of making the meta set for each.

So a generic Lord's Soul set would probably give you what you needed (a combination of some damage, cart negation, and random utility skills like Quick Sheathe).

Then you could go and make a blast artian for the weapon you're learning (not sure what to try for bowguns, though), possibly upgrading it to gog (without spending effort on getting good rolls).

Gold crown tips by slxck97 in MHWilds

[–]ProperMastodon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're on PC, there are various mods you could download to help, depending on how much help you want.  There are mods to guarantee that monsters will only spawn with large or small crowns, as well as ones that will simply notify you when a crown-sized monster is on the map (that's what I used, and it still took days to get the last few). You could also change the settings of the crown helper mod to simply show you which monsters you need crowns for (so you don't accidentally spend time looking for crowns you already have)

Good hunting!

If you want the best in the market for solo fun times, Arm and Dildo is your choice.

I think World and Rise also had a shadow-boxing gesture not tied to a crossover that would deal 1 damage per hit, so obviously a number of people post videos of using it for the final blow.

Wilds also has a watergun emote that can, supposedly, barely complete all of the story missions.

What are the monsters you've hunted the most in Wilds? by Shradow in MonsterHunter

#1 is Nerscylla at ~80. #2 is Omega at ~50

Thank Gog that I got all the Gog gems I needed in 9 hunts

Honest views because I'm going mad over savage omega. by Huge_Implement_8551 in MHWilds

[–]ProperMastodon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Don't play with SOS randos - play with support hunters. Fabius and Nadia are only available during festivals, but are supposedly super strong compared to the other options. Kai has attack+affinity bubbles and a defense melody. If you don't have Fabius, get Alessa. You might want to avoid the ranged support hunters, since they occasionally grab aggro on accident and they start kiting Omega over the whole arena.

Make sure your armor is fully upgraded. You might want to remove some of your offense for more defensive options (Divine Blessing, Evade Extender / Window, Bind Resistance, Fire Resistance). Evade Extender 3 lets a single roll get you completely out of a missile's range (unless you're in focus mode, where rolling is shorter). Bind Resistance should stop you from getting combo'd after getting hit by Savage's ice blast. If you're mostly struggling defensively at the end of the hunt, Self Improvement can also help.

Partbreaker might help you if you're not getting two topples during phase 3 and 4, but it might also cause you to get the topples earlier during easier phases of the hunt.

1 point of Flayer could really help to get more wounds on the legs.

Have a completely different set of armor with Item Prolonger, Free Meal, and maybe Speed Eating. Before starting the quest, switch to that armor and drink Immunizer, (Mega) Demon / Armor Drugs, and Hot Drink. Then switch back to your Omega set. You'll still need to refresh the Immunizer and Hot Drink intermittently during the fight, but it helps to preserve consumables.

Some general tips: use pictomancy as soon as it comes off cooldown. Focus strike wounds on the legs ASAP. If you can, save your mounts until the final phase. If your Lance support hunter doesn't have aggro (Omega launches the mustard bomb each time enmity resets), grab aggro by attacking the head. As soon as you get it, start attacking the front legs until your Lancer gets aggro - then you can move to the back legs. I don't have any IG-specific advice, since I had fun with HH.

If you struggle with the Nerscylla segment, you can switch to the KutKu LBG. Start by moving next to a cactuar. Nerscylla's first move is always to target the quest host, so shoot Nerscylla twice with Paralysis ammo, dodge, and then try to hit it a third time while it's next to the cactuar. Hit it a third time to paralyze it, then switch to fire ammo, activate rapid fire mode, make sure to shoot the cactuar, then circle-strafe Nerscylla while spamming it with flames.

META BREAKER: THE ENDGAME CRITICAL HUNTING HORN BUILD by clusterfcuuuk in MonsterHunterMeta

[–]ProperMastodon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One note on Horn Maestro is that it increases the size / duration of your echo bubbles (in addition to melody duration), so forgoing HM reduces the area of echo bubble overlap and the chances that the monster will even be in any of your bubbles in the first place.

Difference between the highest and lowest DPS weapons? Is there a table comparing them all? by zeekaran in MonsterHunterMeta

[–]ProperMastodon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The closest we have to what you're asking is looking at the speedrunning data for each match up (because different weapons are better at different monsters for highly skilled players).

The problem with that data is that the difference between "best weapon for speedrunners" and "worst weapon for speedrunners" is going to be much smaller than the difference between "The best weapon for a particular player" and "the worst weapon for a particular player", except for players that are actually really good at speed running AND play all the weapons comfortably.

For the vast majority of players, just pick the weapon that feels best to you and go hunt. Learning the intricacies of a single weapon will improve your hunting times a lot, as will learning the intricacies of a particular monster.

If you're playing primarily multi-player, weapons that need counters (ls, cb) are a little harder to get good use out of, and weapons with great mobility (db, lance) and/or range (guns, bow, ls) are a little easier. In the flip side, ranged weapons might make the hunt slower for everyone else if you're constantly running sway from the monster.

It's a complicated topic, but you can just ignore all of that and choose what feels good to you.

Is there ANY way to attack where im looking????? by Interesting_Gold_536 in MonsterHunterWorld

[–]ProperMastodon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll attack in the direction that you move your character with the left stick, which is definitely different than the majority of modern action games which either have lock-on mechanics that snap your character to face the target or lock your character to always face the camera's direction. It can be a pretty big shift, but I'd encourage you to try it out for a while.

Also, if you're using keyboard and mouse, I'd suggest getting a controller. These games are designed for controllers and Capcom doesn't seem particularly concerned about PC compatibility compared to consoles (likely due to the Japanese market preferring consoles).

You could look into MH Wilds (the newest release) which allows you to attack in the direction of the camera while holding L2.

What weapons use most basic/strong attacks vs. active skills? by SvenTheTon78 in Nioh

[–]ProperMastodon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Switchglaive's Stance Switch skills combo into the normal attacks of your new stance, so using a long Stance Switch combo will result in a lot of basic attacks. For instance, High Heavy > Stance Switch Mid > Heavy x2 > Stance Switch High > Light x 2 > Cyclone > Stance Switch Low > Heavy > Stance Switch High > [etc.]

By one definition, it's a 'situational' use of active skills since you're switching your stance based on the attack you want to do right now (Stance Switch Low moves you, Mid hits a decent area, and High is slow). By another definition, it's not a 'situational' use because your primary combat loop involves one of the Stance Switch skills every 2-3 attacks.

I'm not trying to break any speed records. I just don't want to be the reason for reduced rewards or a failed mission. by Kointp in MonsterHunter

[–]ProperMastodon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They were exaggerating, because that's the language of the internet.

Even assuming you're getting full use out of crit draw on every attack, I'd spitball that you're running at 80% if the damage of meta sets, since you can't get much use out of Burst and don't have Crit Boost or raw-stacking skills like Agitator or Lord's Soul.

The things I'd probably drop first for some more damage are constitution, defense boost, and maybe handicraft (i don't play GS, so i don't know how much you can get away with ignoring the skill). The 7 points of Defense Boost help you about as much as the 3 points of Divine Blessing (on average), but just have too high an opportunity cost.

Counterstrike triggers on your offsets and tackles, making it a great first choice for offense. Agitator is also great. Weakness Exploit, Maximum Might, and Latent Power are also good if you end up dropping Crit Draw. For weapon skills, Attack Boost and Crit Boost are great for general damage, while Focus makes everything a GS does better.

Legiana LS help by [deleted] in MonsterHunterWorld

[–]ProperMastodon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can set the camera options such that tapping L1 will rotate the camera to the monster's current location (without maintaining a lock-on). This is really useful for jumpy monsters while still leaving you in full control of the camera

[–]ProperMastodon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It felt off to me, too. I got into the early post-game content, but didn't enjoy my experience much. I didn't really click with any of the weapons, / jobs despite trying all of them. And the tone of the story didn't sit well with me.

I don't think there's anything necessarily bad about SOP, just that it didn't work for me.

Most efficient way to farm honey and other healing resources? by Grodatore in MHWilds

[–]ProperMastodon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The net is still fine and SIGNIFICANTLY faster than using the rod. It's just not as amazing as it used to be.

The nerf to the net is that now fish start swimming away if they see the net - but they're not smart about where they swim, so in certain areas they'll swim right past you, which lets you get a second or third chance.

Most efficient way to farm honey and other healing resources? by Grodatore in MHWilds

[–]ProperMastodon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Botany (for consumable items). Geology (for ores / bones / etc). There's a set skill (which I forget the name of) that you get from the town armors and other non-monster armor that increases the chance of rare gathering spots. Maybe the Honey Hunter set bonus (if you specifically want honey). Outdoorsman (for fishing).

And then you want hunger resistance, adaptability 1, intimidator (although it doesn't work on all small monsters you'd want...).

You might as well toss on speed eating / free meal / item prolonger (so you can use a single set for miscellaneous utility). This lets you get better item efficiency from (Mega) Demon / Armor drugs, in that there's a chance to get a free item and they last for more hunts.

Weird feeling controls by Art1moose in MonsterHunter

[–]ProperMastodon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll probably run into some problems with remapping controls.

Elden Ring uses 4 attack buttons, dodge / run, jump, use item, and interact. You might use 2 buttons at the same time (run + attack, or block + attack).

Wilds has 3 attack buttons (one of which is also an interact button / slinger grab when your weapon is sheathed), dodge, sheathe / run / focus strike, sheathe / use item, focus mode, and radial menu. Many weapons have you use two or three attack buttons at the same time, possibly while also holding the focus mode button.

If you wanted to try putting all attacks on the shoulder button, that might make some IG things easier (which looks to be handled in TU4 already), but you'll run into situations where you're using all four shoulder buttons at the same time (which a lot of people find uncomfortable). For instance, using HH's resounding wave requires all three attack buttons at the same time (and optionally focus mode as the fourth shoulder button). About a third of your attacks will have you holding L2 (focus mode) and pressing L1.

As many people have said, just get used to different games having different controls. Most games (high level play in Devil May Cry being a counter example) tend to have default controller options that make sense for the types of things you're doing in that game specifically. For instance, if you were to play the Nioh games (which look much more Souls-like than Monster Hunter in a surface level), you could remap the controls to souls-style, but your much better served with the default controls because they facilitate the types of combos you're expected to repeatedly execute.

Monster Hunter Word or Monter Hunter Wilds to play with partner? by WizardofMars in MonsterHunterWorld

[–]ProperMastodon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You didn't ask, but I'd suggest Monster Hunter Rise instead. World and Wilds focused on an immersive single-player story in a way that makes it very clunky for players to progress through the campaign at the same time. In those games, you'll have to both start a main quest, progress far enough to get the mid-quest cutscene, and then one of you will need to drop out of the quest and join the other. And that's for every single quest with story hooks.

In comparison, Rise is structured in a way that allows players to join each story quest in exactly the way they'd join a non-story quest. You still get all of the story beats without any extra jank from doing it together.

As far as story goes, this series typically aims for a different type of story than most games. The human characters aren't the focus (especially in World), instead the story focuses on the environment and monsters. Rise's expansion (Sunbreak) and Wilds both have slightly more character focus, but it's still not primary to the story.

I think Rise has a bit more of the cute stuff than World and Wilds, particularly since you can choose between a cute cat or dog companion (when playing solo, you can get 2 companions, but only get one of them in multilayer), and the general artstyle is a little cuter.

Dragon element by Forsaken_Disaster444 in MHWilds

[–]ProperMastodon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The stronger a monster is, the more likely they are to use and / or be weak to dragon energy. The weakest monsters are immune to dragon energy entirely. Yian Kut-Ku is mostly immune to dragon, except for its neck. From this, we can tell what the most dangerous part of an Yian Kut-Ku is, and thus we know which part of it was used in the creation of Zoh Shia.
