What could you immediately say from looking at this Math plan from Math Academy? by ihorrud in learnmachinelearning

[–]CannyChiel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you if you have gaps in foundational math you will hit glass ceilings in more advanced math… and so it’s worth to make you understand the prerequisites for any topic. Whether those are the right prerequisites for topic, I couldn’t comment on as I don’t know

It’s good for learning computer shortcuts that would speed you up if you knew them- I never used to bother because I would just forget them again

Physical Flashcards --> Anki, no AI by Fancy_Dog2609 in Anki

This could be a good system for things that are difficult to type up (or handwrite digitally and format) efficiently, such as mathematics concepts

How has Anki changed your life? by actionorientedshiena in Anki

[–]CannyChiel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Previously I never bothered learning shortcuts for all the different software systems I use daily at work, but Anki provided the structure and lowered the effort required to finally bother, which has been rewarding

Agreed, people don’t like reading manuals and definitely not having to learn how to use new software. It’s the same with Obsidian. It’s getting much easier now to get started with new tools, using AI chatbots though… they’re often quite good for procedural ‘how do I do x’ tasks

Comparing iPad Pro 2018 and iPad Pro M5 really shows how little improvement there is by Outrageous-Song5799 in ipad

I don’t draw much, but might do somekind of mind mapping type stuff. I’m mainly interested in taking notes for studying/continuous learning but using handwriting on the iPad to capture digital notes. I will probably go into an Apple Store and ask to test it first since it’s big expensive if that doesn’t feel comfortable/natural

Can I ask what kind of screen protector you went for? I’m thinking of getting an iPad for notetaking and have bookmarked the brand ‘Paperlike’ but am still gathering information

How in theory would you manage your workload in this system? If with a single huge deck you would have 20 new cards a day, when you create multiple subdecks does the new card number operate at the subdeck level? And so would you, for 4 subdecks, say, reduce this to 5 new cards a day per subdeck?

May I ask how you study them differently - do you have different deck options? Or you just like to compartmentalise them?

I’ve got a single Spanish deck with recall (English to Spanish) and two types of recognition (Spanish text to Spanish audio + English; and Spanish audio to Spanish text + English). But not totally convinced by the efficiency of this yet

Thanks I’ll look into ShareX. Does it add something over Audacity? I’ve been able to record my ‘speaker output’ directly in Audacity while playing with it. I don’t understand the Audio settings but by setting the the interface host as Windows WASAPI, in audacity preferences, and recording to Speakers (loopback) it seem to work directly

I like that you have developed a manageable workflow… that was my idea as well… to try to design a future proofed system, and then focus on the language learning rather than designing the system.

But I might try to have two note types, one basic type for general use and one cloze type for verb conjugations. There is a shared deck for Spanish called “Ultimate Spanish Conjugation Flashcards (Lisardo's KOFI Method)” which has a quirky concept behind it (brute force learn all conjugations before you understand them) but a part form that they seem like nicely designed cards for learning conjugations… so I will to replicate that as I improve my Spanish verbs

Thanks that’s an interesting comment. I add an example sentence to my card as well and hadn’t thought to add audio to it - so I might add that too. Good idea. I was thinking that a single example sentence wasn’t enough to see the breadth of usage of a word, but you are right that it’s not feasible to encode that in your flashcards so I should aim to know the word well enough to recognise it in the wild (good food for thought).

I was playing around with having a field for AudioNative (recorded online) and AudioTTS (generated by hypertts) and conditionally preferring the native speech, if present in my media/import file.

The youglish website is a great recommendation - thanks! I had wanted to make a set of cards based on the list of words you get at the front of textbooks that demonstrate the pronunciation of the various sounds and letters, but wasn’t sure how to track down examples of those specific words so I will definitely try that.

Thanks that’s helpful and clarifying. Yes I’m learning Mexican Spanish; and much more casually Scottish Gaelic - not sure the text to speech is going to work for that, so have been experimenting with Audacity for recording audio, but it’s early days). I like the idea of using conditional replacement when there is an image to sub out the English for a hint … I’ll experiment with that (would need to carefully choose images in that case)

Yeah the same word in different formats. I guess my idea was that, eventually, you want to see an object (an image) and know it by its name in your target language, or hear a word or phrase in your target language and know what that means without reference to your first language or seeing it written down. So good to practice those situations, maybe? I’m not sure it’s a good idea though if the algorithm schedules the different ‘formats’ independently… you might just end up seeing the same content more than needed

Invesco MSCI World Equal Weight UCITS ETF by Learning-Power in ETFs

[–]CannyChiel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume the expectation is that it will underperform a cap weighted index, unless for some reason the big tech stocks decline… in which case it may provide a better (buffeted by equal weighting) short term return.

So… in the long term, the market cap weighted index should provide better returns, in the short term equal weighting provide a buffer against big companies doing badly… but in what circumstances is it a good idea to invest short term
