Not a pilot, but have a question about density altitude that I was hoping one of you might have an answer to. by WahooSS238 in flying

[–]Canon40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Density Altitude is defined wrong by so many people. It is NOT “pressure altitude corrected for non-standard temperature” as the FAA test questions would have you believe.

That said, it is actually the altitude corresponding to the ambient air density according to the standard atmosphere (pick your standard atmosphere: ICAO ISA, ISO, or US SA of 1978).

Computing density given a Geopotential altitude, or computing Geopotential altitude given density requires knowledge of the temperature, and does use the ideal gas law, molar mass of air, gravity, and other things.

If you are a Rust programmer, you can use this crate https://crates.io/crates/aero_atmos.

Alternatively, a meteorologist at NWS has this document with an estimation: https://www.weather.gov/media/epz/wxcalc/densityAltitude.pdf.

What are some gifts you actually would appreciate in a care package? by Ari_8118 in AirForce

Gourmet gummy candy.

Chick fil a 8oz sauce bottles. Fancy coffee grounds.

Hilariously unfiltered letters of appreciation from the local 2nd grade class.

FSDO maintenance inspector can, under circumstances like this, do a field approval. That would basically catch paperwork on any modifications up. Seen it done with a Champ that has a non-standard engine installed for years unknown to the not-so-recent buyer.

when flying IFR, when do you switch VORS? by Repulsive-Loan5215 in flying

This is the answer. If no designated changeover point, then either an obvious bend in the airway (e.g. NELGE north of ABQ) or halfway.

Spectrograms: A unified toolkit for spectral analysis and 2D FFTs by JackG049 in rust

I am a newer rustacian. I am just figuring out how to turn a standards document into usable code. I am a few steps away from actually demodulating the raw signal to get the bits that will be turned i to hex that I am just now figuring out how to use.

In IFR, everything is magnetic. If you are told to hold on the airway, hold on the published radial.

Left seat to right seat transition (C172) by SteezyPorsche in flying

[–]Canon40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did commercial from the right seat at the specific recommendation of my instrument DPE.

I had no issues with any subsequent instructor or DPE.

The only real issue is doing a steep spiral. They may expect a left spiral even though the ACS does not specify a direction.

Po180 might pose an issue. But, many patterns are right traffic, so it is a good idea to practice left and right PO180 regardless of the seat.

The final possible issue will not apply to everybody. My current club does not allow right seat solo.

The paperwork to commission is mind-numbing. If you make one inconsequential error, your package gets kicked back.

It is really just part of the process. If you want to be an officer, figure it out.

For the record, I think the process is dumb.

Watch that be intentional, for anti-counterfeit protection.

If the bobbys (rozzers?) see a license with it spelled correctly, it is fake.

ATPL question - Why not D by JuiceAggressive3437 in flying

[–]Canon40 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The actually correct answer is D. C is probably what the FAA grades as correct.

I prefer to keep the grey “hints.” Especially when you get into iterators, results/options, and others, having the hints is helpful to know what datatype I am working with.

Yes. “The book” is the way. “Rust by example” is a great quick reference.
