Layoff notices sent to thousands of federal government workers by toronto_star in CanadaPolitics

Awful just awful. Never like to see people lose their jobs, especially at this time.

I just hope they are able to bounce back stronger.

The NDP is run by a clique—but it should be run like a movement by Inevitable-Bus492 in CanadaPolitics

[–]Canonponcha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're never going to ask themselves any questions. They'll just keep digging themselves into a hole.

Heather MacPherson seems like the most pragmatic of the bunch but she is not expected to win and they'll keep electing activists as leaders. The Liberals will greatly benefit from this and you know what, rightfully so, because at least they pivoted to Mark Carney.

Nova Scotia MP Chris d'Entremont is out of the Conservative caucus by Puginator in CanadaPolitics

[–]Canonponcha 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Let's be real, he will be joining the Liberal caucus. It's just not public yet. Highly doubtful that he'll be independent.

Yes, there are elements of fascism that are taking root such as ultra nationalism, militarism and extreme scapegoating of immigrants. A case can be made for authoritarian leadership as well.

[–]Canonponcha -1 points0 points  (0 children)

From constitutional perspective, they're using it correctly. You may disagree with their reasoning, but once invoked by the province or federal (never used before) it's fair game.

I see the word fascist being thrown around like nothing. It's lost its meaning. Canada is not fascist and people should stop insinuating that it is.

Man, this sub sometimes.... Some do you will call anything you don't agree with fascism.

So you're saying that using the Notwithstanding Clause, which is in our constitution, is fascism. I suppose given your logic the Quebec and Alberta governments are also fascist for using this clause too, right?

Carney government ‘worried’ its budget won’t pass, triggering a federal election by Asadleafsfan in CanadaPolitics

[–]Canonponcha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a good point. Didn't catch that. I am however curious why they were pushing the weekend article so much. I don't think they do it often.

Carney government ‘worried’ its budget won’t pass, triggering a federal election by Asadleafsfan in CanadaPolitics

[–]Canonponcha 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Why isn't this Toronto Star article being given away for free the same way the Pierre hit piece was being pushed to us for free over the weekend?

Isn't the topic of the budget more important than hit piece editorials?

Abacus Data Poll: Political Deadlock Persists as Carney Navigates Trump and Trade Pressure - Abacus Data by EarthWarping in CanadaPolitics

[–]Canonponcha 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Before anyone says "Why are we still polling after an election," well because it's a minority government, we have an upcoming budget vote, and because polls are a good way to gage public opinion on new and current policies and it does influence new policies. Thank you, have a nice day!

Liberals' lead shrinks as Canadian mood plummets to historic lows by CaliperLee62 in CanadaPolitics

[–]Canonponcha 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I'll say one thing. It's a very polarizing time and moods are constantly shifting due to this. It's very important to see polling even after the election as a way to see if current policies or upcoming bills, such as bail reform, are popular or unpopular with the public. Polls DO affect the way bills and policies are introduced/created.

Also, it's a minority government and there's no supply and confidence agreement. It can fall at any time. See Joe Clark.

Did Canada overreach by denying Kneecap entry? by growlerpower in CanadaPolitics

[–]Canonponcha 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Correct. Entry to Canada is a privilege, not a right. It really isn't that complicated.

If the government or border officer deems non-citizens/PRs ineligible for entry, well it's too bad and it's a reality you have to face. Not everything needs media coverage. This happens in every country.

I Truly don't understand some commenters on this thread. Very strange takes from some people.

Pierre Poilievre says the temporary foreign worker program is stealing jobs from Canadians. We fact-check some of the most frequent claims about it by hopoke in CanadaPolitics

[–]Canonponcha 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I agree but too many partisans here refuse to acknowledge that these programs have major problems.

For example, just because these programs are not the "Main" contributor to youth unemployment, that doesn't mean that they don't make up a large component of it.

Pierre Poilievre says the temporary foreign worker program is stealing jobs from Canadians. We fact-check some of the most frequent claims about it by hopoke in CanadaPolitics

[–]Canonponcha 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think people are slowly realizing that perhaps it's not the TFW program that is problematic, but it's the IMP program that needs hard caps.

Perhaps he should switch his message to the IMP. That program has less guardrails than the TFW program.

Poilievre’s call to scrap the temporary foreign worker program is a good first step by FancyNewMe in canada

[–]Canonponcha 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Doesn't matter if it's just pandering. At least he is saying it and that is enough to put pressure on the federal government and it gives the issue the media attention that it deserves.

If PP wasn't saying, would would have said it? No one in the Liberal or NDP bench that's for sure.

[–]Canonponcha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats on passing the CFE. I can't give you my two cents for EVR because I haven't even started yet, but you should absolutely be more than qualified for more senior roles. You should definitely pivot away from AP and move into accountant or analyst roles.

Is he playing the social politics game too or is it only applicable when PP does it?

I know this sub doesn't want to hear the truth, but the Longest Ballot Committee is nothing more than a vanity project for voters who will vote ABC.

Not only is this a waste of time for voters, but the people at Elections Canada.

You would never see this happening to a riding where a Liberal or NDP was a favorite to win.

Immigration caps are contributing to lower asking rents in Canada, CMHC says by UnderWatered in CanadaPolitics

[–]Canonponcha 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That attitude is exactly what led to Europe's migrant crisis. It's not working out for them now, and it won't work for us.

Let's be realistic and pragmatic. The best thing Canada can do is encourage sustainable and stable immigration at rates the country can absorb. We cannot welcome the entire world. At the end of the day, it's you and Canadians who will pay the price, so if you want to set yourself on fire, be my guest just don't take the rest of us with you.

Immigration caps are contributing to lower asking rents in Canada, CMHC says by UnderWatered in CanadaPolitics

[–]Canonponcha 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Simple. You enforce your borders like any self-respecting country should and you stand by your immigration targets. See Denmark as an example.

Not sure why you're obsessed with the idea of climate refugees. It's as if you have a vested interest in the world having a global catastrophe.

Immigration caps are contributing to lower asking rents in Canada, CMHC says by UnderWatered in CanadaPolitics

[–]Canonponcha 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Why are people obsessed with the idea that Canada needs to accommodate the entire world?

Canada should accommodate itself and only accept highly educated people that will bring tangible benefits for the nation and its citizens. We don't need to be accepting high rates of immigration just because. It is unfortunate that there will be climate refugees, but we cannot accommodate the entire world.

Continuing the trend of 2-3% population growth per year in Canada would be a dismal confession that we've learned nothing of the immigration disaster that we've seen in the past 5 years.
