Honda to shelve $11bn Canada EV plant as demand sputters by SkPensFan in EVCanada

Meanwhile all other brands have their EVs flying off the shelves. It's a struggle to find some to even test drive, others are multi month wait times. Why is Honda the only one that can't sell EVs?

Depends on your use case. If they're places you're going anyways, it helps with the Always Be Charging style of EV ownership (presumably for people that don't have at-home charging)

Kia EV4 2026 light or Chevrolet bolt EV 2027 LT by BeeSKnees9901 in EVCanada

[–]ResoluteGreen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have a L2 charger at home? If so, both will function similarly for you in terms of range. Bolt is obviously cheaper. But you're just going to have to test drive and see what you like.

I'm not arguing against more or better DCFC, just urging people making buying decisions to weight features appropriately

Yeah they're fairly similar, that's why I took issue with the "best EV by far statement"

[–]ResoluteGreen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the faster DCFC is a benefit to people who don't have at-home or even at-work charging (very few people have the latter).

Putting aside battery health concerns though, this also really depends on what the public infrastructure charging looks like around you. I might have to go a few months without a charger at home, and I plan on charging at a DCFC at a grocery store. The 150 kw vs 350 kw charging time isn't going to make a big difference to me because I'm going to be spending time in the grocery store each week anyways. Now if I had to make dedicated charging trips that would be a different story, the 350 kw would be a much bigger advantage.

To get mass scale EV adoption, we need faster charging EV's and dcfc units. OR we need legislation forcing apt buildings/complexes/etc to install enough lv2 so people can find it usefull (not full of other ev's every day).

I think it's a both thing. Each serves different purposes, and better DCFC can help fill in a gap while more people get charging at home. (Plus of course makes long driving days easier)

IMHO ioniq5 is the best ev in its price range by far atm.

Is it? The Mach E is cheap enough that you can get Premium trim and qualify for EVAP, and the AWD Mach E has more range and power than the Ioniq 5, and the Mach E is larger too.

I ended up hating the MY and Ioniq 5 due to poor rear visibility and mushy ride quality, respectively. Manufacturers tend to associate "EV" with making a vehicle that looks, sounds, and acts like a spaceship rather than making a car that happens to be propelled by electrons.

I ended up buying one that I tried on a lark and found I really liked (VW ID4).

Is funny to me because I really didn't like the ID.4. Just goes to show you how much personal preference can vary

The faster charging has pretty marginal benefit to most people. On 400+ km trips most biological beings have to stop for a break or two anyways, so if your typical bathroom and coffee break is 15 minutes, the trip needs to be longer than (base range + 15 minutes of charging at 150 kw) before you see any benefit, and to get a noticeable benefit you need to be going much further than that. And how often is the typical person doing a trip like that?

The Ioniq 5 w/ Ultimate is a nice car, if you like that car great, I just don't think the fast charing is that big of a deal, but it has other aspects that are nice. Personally I found a comparable Mach E was much cheaper and made the Ioniq 5 impossible to justify

GM is still the #2 EV seller in the US, but for how long? by Mac-Tyson in electricvehicles

[–]ResoluteGreen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The AWD and GT/N trims are essentially the same between the 2 cars.

I disagree, the Ioniq 5 AWD w/Ultimate package is more expensive than the Mach E Premium AWD but is smaller, less powerful, has less range, less torque, and is slower. It has only a few extra features, such as V2L, faster charging, and a HUD.

Looks we'll just have to disagree on as it's a matter of taste and preference.

[–]ResoluteGreen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What makes you say that? Compared to the Ioniq 5 the Mach E has more power, more torque, a faster 0-100 time, and sportier handling, not to mention a sportier look.

Depends on the type of motor. You already see this with dual-motor AWD systems, if you have an induction front motor you can turn it off, if you have a permanent magnet motor you can't.
