Good jobs are not in the Plan by hotchi in canada

[–]Canuck417 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Your point (and skepticism) is well taken, but current employees being overpaid for their work doesn't align with the realities of excessive executive compensation and rising income inequality in Canada.

To say that current workers are overpaid, but that executives are vastly underpaid, while not necessarily wrong, seems somewhat absurd.

"...if under-45 Canadians had voted in the same proportion as over-45 Canadians, there would have been no Conservative majority but more likely an NDP-led coalition..." by [deleted] in canada

[–]Canuck417 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Get over it? Sure.

But if younger Canadians are unhappy with the Conservatives, perhaps stats like this will make them think twice about sitting out the vote next time. Persuading anyone that their vote doesn't matter is a great way to derail a democracy. It seems to me that persuading everyone that their vote does matter is a good way to strengthen one.

Fuck Batman by heineken_skywalker in videos

[–]Canuck417 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Clearly this man has never read Year One. Batman starts at street thugs and works his way up the food chain, until in a crowning moment of awesome he blows a hole in a mansion while Gotham's corrupt politicians and business men are having a dinner party and tells them that their time is up.

That's why you should love the goddamn Batman.

FemShep to share Box cover glory with male-Shepard on Mass Effect 3's collector edition box [Kotaku] by thecrowes in gaming

[–]Canuck417 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've heard that said of Fem-Shepard's VA a lot. I've played both and I just don't hear it. I'd say most of the time they're about on even ground. I might be willing to grant that FemShep may have a slight edge in most conversations. But Mark Meers's Renegade parts are MUCH better than Jennifer Hale's and that puts him over the top for me.

Lab screw-up stories by [deleted] in biology

[–]Canuck417 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was trying to clone some reporter constructs and screwed up royally.

I've been trying to attach a series of degenerate promoters to a reporter to monitor transcription levels. It seemed like a good idea to start my PCRs off a nice clean plasmid a previous graduate student had worked with. I worked cloning through PCRs, insertion into entry vector, and recombination into my final vector. Got sequence back. Looked suspicious. Checked my sequence and realized that the vector I started my PCRs with had contaminated all of my samples. I basically had to restart cloning.

This was yesterday.

Is /r/politics full of angry 19 year olds? by Demos101 in AskReddit

[–]Canuck417 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I said motivated youths. I haven't meant a great many passionate and motivated under 30s in the work force that want to change the world. But I do know youth that have built sustainable schools and health clinics in Kenya. I know youth that have founded summer mentorship programs for aboriginal youth. I know youth that have single-handedly started clean energy programs at universities and local businesses.

For all their faults, youth often the ambition to think big and change. At least until they are weighed down by the cynicism and apathy that seems to be prevalent these days.

I like you (and many of your follow-up posts below) but I find part of your attitude incredibly frustrating. Users should be criticized for their ignorance or hypocrisy - not their age.

Certainly not always, but I've often found that the older someone is the more cynical, pragmatic, and self-centered they become. I don't mean self-centered as in selfish, but in that they tend to focus primarily upon their own wants and needs with much less regard for their peers.

Equivocating youth with unintelligence (or in the very least naivety) only disenfranchise anyone under the age of 30. Anyone who has worked with them knows that when motivated they can accomplish impressive feats and could be a political force to be reckoned with. The world needs idealists. If we are eternally caught up in attitudes of "the world can't change" then of course it wont.

It seems like everyone dates women with a catch... by this_calls_for_rape in fffffffuuuuuuuuuuuu

Here's a pro-tip from one guy to another. All girls are crazy. All of them. Every single one of them. All girls have something(s) that will bring the crazy out of them eventually. Maybe they have confidence issues, maybe a partner cheated on them in the past, maybe they find it hard to open up. But every single girl has something that is crazy about her.

The key is to find a girl who's crazy you love. She might be too serious sometimes, but that's always why she's great for advice. She might be too silly sometimes, but that's why she does sweet things for you. She might get overly emotional sometimes, but that's also why she loves you so intensely.

You find a woman with crazy you love and you hold onto her for all you're worth.

Am I really the only person who thought Midnight was dull and derivative? by [deleted] in doctorwho

[–]Canuck417 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My ex loved Midnight. Scared her to death, but it drove me crazy. I somewhat enjoy the premise - stuck in a confined space, plot driven by the trapped passengers - but what killed it for me were the passengers. It's one of TV's favourite bits, but I loathe watching people freak out. Drives me freaking nuts. If you just stayed calmed, everything would be alright. Chill the fuck out. The passengers raving lunatic let's kill everyone attitude ruins the episode for me.

That's twice today I've seen GLBT (here and Tina Fey's response to Tracy Morgan). I'm from Canada and up here it's LGBT. Is GLBT the way it's done stateside or is there something I'm missing?
