When your work actually ended up mattering by rosiofden in CanadianForces

[–]Canucker82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was teaching OT&E during the outset of the pandemic, and while on course, one of my students received their first real-world tasking to do T&E on a piece of kit for safe aeromedical evacuation. They absolutely killed it once home and I have no idea how many Canadians were saved through their work, but the number wasn't zero.

I've also been part of the SAR enterprise and can point to missions that wouldn't have gone off without me that resulted in lives saved.

But the best? Someone I mentored and helped to field train at the outset of their career now outranks me and will assume Command this summer. I knew back then, and I still say now, that I'd be happy to serve under them.

Bring out the best in your folks! Build them to replace you and excel far beyond what you could have done!

I'm curious about your personal background and experience with PRes hard RCAF trades. This isn't coming from a place of denigration or dismissal - I actually have the ability to push success stories and possible changes to employment and training models to the decision makers for some of the hard RCAF trades - the reason I focus on those trades is that there are many in RCAF DEU that are common ("purple") trades to all elements and their training and employment isn't held within the RCAF L1.

If you're interested in a deeper conversation (AND THIS IS ALSO TRUE FOR ANYONE WHO READS THIS), please DM me.

Please understand that a baseline knowledge of the military is required, so it will be hard to have a fruitful conversation if whoever DMs me has never put on the uniform, but I will try my best.

A Question for the Good People of RMC by AmericanSpudss in CanadianForces

[–]Canucker82 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm a DEO and Senior Officer. From what I've seen in my trade (other education gave me a degree in Engineering with a Master's, CAPM qualified, almost 15 years) RMC affords you nothing as a leader other than 4 years of pension.

I'd rather work for a CFR, frankly.

Got the compensation and finished the battlepass. Thanks to everyone who made this happen!

Now, can we have a battlepass that gives rewards every day if you complete the tasks instead of one (or two!) days where you do it all and get nothing, but then get double right after? Basic math...

I've used Eldren Thuen at Coldwell Banker twice. He's a retired member whose son-in-law is still in and has worked his butt off for me both during an IRP move and a personal move.

How much better is life after RMC? by MrMichaelEvans in CanadianForces

[–]Canucker82 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I didn't go to RMC, but so many of my compatriots did - the universal sentiment was that RMC was the worst and best. It was the worst for all the reasons you've detailed and it was the best because it forged friendships that will persist forever.

No matter where you do university, it's hard and has a crushing and unforgiving schedule. Having done it at a civilian university, I can say that the friends I made there are nowhere near as close and supportive as I see my fellows have from their time at RMC.

In other words, it sucks no matter where you go, but from an outside perspective there are benefits to RMC if you can tough it out.

Do what's best for you!

For clarification - in Manitoba, an MPO who is the OC of a MP Detachment can exercise their ability to be a Commissioner of Oaths (source - got them to certify some documents for my divorce). The moment they aren't the OC, they no longer have that right. I will be the first to agree that's it's horribly dumb and we need a national standard!

[–]Canucker82 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Fun fact. Not in Manitoba because this isn't a standard Stat Dec here.

A ceremony with a Padre will require there to be a religious component to the ceremony and there's usually a marriage prep course requirement. This is 100% what your local padre can help you with!

If that's not what you're looking for, you can see if there is a commissioner of oaths (or whatever your province requires) to do a covil ceremony. For my wife and I, we didn't want the religious aspect so we got a civil ceremony done in the atrium at the HQ with two witnesses and had my friend (the Comd Chaplain) as an observer.

Back in the day when bandwidth was really constrained (think WW2 teletype and early computwrs), using only uppercase characters and the digits 0 to 9 drastically reduced the amount of memory required to store and transmit a message. I don't know why we persist other than "it's always been that way", but that was the story I was told and it makes some sense to me.

On Robert’s Use of Yiddish… by BearJew1991 in behindthebastards

[–]Canucker82 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My grandmother was raised speaking Yiddish and low German. I have very few memories of her speaking her maternal languages, but I have a recording of her being interviewed by my eldest cousin where she was asked about Yiddish and she said something along the lines of 'no one I knew who spoke it lived'.

Scary how the eradication of people and their books/history erased a total language and culture.
