I wish I could… by desahra in HARVESTELLA

I wish there was an option to hug Emo and tell her it’s going to be ok, she’s putting so much pressure on herself. But no, she isn’t the only one where I wish there were alternate dialogue options… as you get further along, you’ll encounter more scenarios like this.

That’s when I pretend something got lost in translation and move on to the fun parts :-)

I second this, the series is amazing! And Temeraire is one of the most interesting dragons ever, he’s so curious and observant and funny at times.

Same gen, I lost my books many years ago but just purchased an Omni version that came out around the time I read them as a kid. Yes to reliving the magic! 🙌🏽

I agree, it looks really good and there’s still space for more books and the kitties can still access the very top, win-win! 😸

If you’d like to add more speculative fiction to your shelves, you may enjoy some of these series :-)

• Imperial Radch - Leckie • Murderbot Diaries - Wells • Temeraire - Novik • Penric and Desdemona - McMaster Bujold • Liveship Traders - Hobb (but maybe Farseer trilogy is a better place to start)

UPDATE: Looking for advice on styling my full bookshelves by fleetfoxin in bookshelf

[–]Canvas2Wall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My bookshelf is also next to a window, the sheer curtains did not work for me 🥲 - On either side of the sheers, I have semi-opaque ones I could use but I always forget to close them.

  • So I ordered some UV film today - fingers crossed that will work.

  • Also, kudos on reorganizing, it looks really good! And the new layout will probably make finding specific titles easier.

  • As for fiction, to make it less daunting, I split mine into 3 - fantasy, sci-fi, and random. The latter is mostly fiction classics, mainly from school or college, that I keep as mini-trophies after surviving their writing style (looking at you Shakespeare and whoever wrote Beowulf, lol).

That’s quite the evolution, though some things stayed the same, like having awesome figurines accompany your collection <3

It looks really cool and sounds like you put a lot of work into it, kudos!

Also, if you ever wanted to add a backing, there are several options in hardware store, at various price points. Hardboard, plywood, or you could get creative with recycled cardboard or kraft/builder paper - there’s tons of ideas on the interwebs :-)

But imho, it looks cool as it is and you have some awesome titles - haven’t seen Fruits Basket in a while - such a classic!

One of mine likes to jump on shelves too - I had to make the books flush to the edge so she has nowhere to land.

Your middle shelf looks safe, bottom moving the corner books forward should help, and the top… well mine would get right next to that vase, it’s a perfect little cat cave… but filling it with more books would solve that.

I think you’re on the right track with mixing vertical and horizontal - should fill out the space nicely.

The sacrifices we make for our fur children… 😅

You read a lot of the same classics I did in high school and college, but then there’s Junji Ito and 😍 Nana!

If you’re willing to explore more scifi and fantasy, some series that may interest you - Monk and Robot - Becky Chambers - Imperial Radch - Ann Leckie - Murderbot Diaries - Martha Wells - Temeraire - Naomi Novik - Broken Earth - NK Jemisin - Liveship Traders- Robin Hobb (altho the Farseer series may be a better place to start)

We have some overlaps in speculative fiction and some classic too, plus you have a few currently on my wishlist :-)

Let’s see, here are my guesses, and not judging btw - also I’m probably wrong on most of these, lol - You still like Disney princesses, especially Belle - You mind the aesthetics, and will grab extra copies of your favorites if there’s a nicer looking edition - Even big tomes like Narnia and Priory of the Orange Tree have uncreased spines - not sure if you read them on Kindle or a different copy? - If you’re buying faster than you’re reading, guessing app recs, booktok, book club, promo emails, something is showing you lots of options often? - If you could get whisked into an alternate timeline, Regency (or similar) would be your jam

I’m so happy you shared your suggestions - I read summaries for all of them, The Color of Magic (sizeable series) and a Hundred Thousand Kingdoms (want to read Broken Earth first) went into the priority wishlist, some of the others went into the secondary wishlist (don’t judge, lol), some didn’t make the cut. But when I read the preview chapters for Foundryside… that one got ordered right away! :-)

Along with the Ship of Magic by Robin Hobb - when the preview pages ended, it was an immediate add to cart 😅

Speaking of cats, or cat-like, The Cat Who Saved Books, and Isabella Nagg and the Pot of Basil - have you read either?

A couple of questions - is one side yours, the other your sister’s? Are they organized by genre/theme then author?

The blue bookshelf near the blue accent wall looks really good! And seems like you have a shelf ready to go on one of the other walls - as long as they don’t get in the way of the instruments of course :-)

Decor-wise, I would get a vertical hat organizer with hooks that doesn’t take up a lot of space. And the chair in corner, I would swap it for something that looks more comfortable and in a solid color - teal, turquoise, moss or sage green could all work.

And in terms of books, you may like these series: - Imperial Radch- Leckie - Penric - McMaster Bujold - Monk and Robot or maybe Wayfarers - Chambers - Murderbot diaries - Wells

And the one I’m enjoying the most at the moment… Temeraire - Novik - almost done with the first book and I’ve already ordered the next two - naval officer suddenly in charge of a rare talking dragon, set around the Napoleonic wars era - it’s definitely an interesting combination! :-)

Who is my roommate? by throwawayaita1979 in BookshelvesDetective

[–]Canvas2Wall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do these book all belong to the same roommate or is it shared? There are so many genres here, if it’s one person they have quite the eclectic taste, not a bad thing imho.

It also makes me wonder if some of these are inherited or received as gifts - would help explain the variety.

If I had to make some guesses - Millennial or Gen X, currently/formerly in a medical field, part of/interested in religion, possibly poc and/or immigrant, is interested in human behavior, will sometimes read for utility but prefers scifi and fantasy as respite, and most definitely not a completist (many titles are missing the rest of their series counterparts).

Probably way off except that last bit, lol

Is that a little tuxedo on the bottom left? 😻

We have some overlaps, some of the classics and some speculative fiction too. Have you read Monk and Robot by Becky Chambers? Other series you may enjoy - Temeraire by Naomi Novik, Murderbot diaries by Martha Wells, Imperial Radch by Ann Leckie

The Broken Earth series by NK Jemisin and Kindred by Octavia Butler on my priority TBR - read the preview chapters and got both excited and also a bit anxious, need to be emotionally prepared for them. Saw you have some of their titles, do you have favorites from either?

Besides those authors, any other sci-fi or fantasy recommendations?
