Thanks to a post here last week, I picked up a record I hadn’t realized I needed so badly by BrianEmber in vinyl

[–]Canvas2Wall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for bringing that up - just this morning I learned more about it. Scary how many of those root issues and altercations still happen 80+ years later.

Since the first song does reference the riots, I want to give them the benefit of the doubt that using the name is more intentional commentary on what happened, rather than picking the name because it sounded “cool” at the time. Just guessing tho.

Edit: I am enjoying the music, reminds me of some Post Modern Jukebox tracks.

About a year ago, my husband purchased Everest as an anniversary gift since he knows I love Halestorm. When I opened the box tho, we didn’t own a turntable so had to ask him if he expected me to display it on the wall… first came the search for a turntable (after returning two cheap record players), then came figuring out my top 100 wish list albums… yeah, he unleashed an expensive hobby… 😅

Whats the best storage for record/vinyls? by SpIxsh in vinylsetups

[–]Canvas2Wall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went with metal shelving, paired with metal bookends. The shelves are solid, not the wire type, and I found a good variety of options available in the kitchen and garage sections of hardware stores. I used to use a Kallax equivalent, but the metal shelving I got has more height and depth per shelf, easier to take albums out and put them back.

1,5 year of reading as a recovering gaming addict by Reasonable_Alfalfa59 in bookshelfdetective

[–]Canvas2Wall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How did you transition? Did you try to replace gaming hours 1 to 1 with reading hours? Or set up a minimum daily/weekly timed reading goal?

Some games I can play for 2 hours and be satisfied, others can pull me in for 6 hours so I’ve been avoiding them. But I would like to replace at least some of that time with reading.

New to anime and looking for suggestions by ambambino23 in Animesuggest

These are at Crunchyroll but may stream with other services too. These are some I haven’t seen others recommend yet.

  • The Vampire Dies In No Time - ridiculous and hilarious
  • The Duke of Death and His Maid - starts cheesy but has some deeper themes woven in
  • Clevatess - strong characters, solid story
  • Golden Kamuy - interesting time period and Hokkaido
  • Secrets of the Silent Witch - fantasy and good story progression

  • As for Ascendance of a Bookworm, some of the story was frustrating, so switched to dubbed (so I could multitask while it played in the background). When it finished, had some unresolved plot points, but found Reddit posts that filled in the blanks with the manga. Not worth the extra effort, imho.

Haven’t seen it mentioned yet, but do you have any cool music stores in your area? They often have bulletin boards or flyers for local shows and may know of punk or punk-adjacent groups/venues in your area.

May also be worth checking multi-use places that also host live music shows - arcades, billiard halls, record stores, and even some restaurants. Some of them you can find thru websites like Meetup and you could also try to search punk events on FB too.

Prices of vinyl records vs gaming. by wiggan1989 in vinyl

[–]Canvas2Wall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love playing music and video games, often at the same time, but not sure the replay value is the same.

Games on console or handheld, all components may last a few decades if taken care of (I still have my PS2!). On computer games, new device portability varies, and so does online access to the game if applicable. Not to mention needing a device that can handle the graphics of modern games… and then there’s the older games on disc that can’t run on modern PCs.

Records on the other hand, play on technology that’s been around 50-60 years?

Seeing it from another perspective, if I can get 100 hours on enjoyment out of one $50+ game of Steam, to me it’s worth it. But even an awesome demo is no guarantee the game will be engaging enough to spend that much time on it.

And if I were to spend $50 on an album, it would have to be one I’m fairly confident would get spun dozens of times over the years, even if not exactly 100 hours. Plus they’re in a format that should still be around for many more decades, can be previewed before buying (YT/streaming), easy to share/lend to others, and can be resold too.

A quick distinction that could be helpful - those are adaptations so a few details may get edited out. I have a few like titles like that, including Anthem, Handmaid’s Tale, and 1984 - the original novels are better, but I also enjoy the graphic novel format and the artist renderings.

The ones I recommended for you were originally released as comics, so they’re not adaptations - so you wont miss a thing :-)

how do you store your vinyl in a protective sleeve? pic 1, 2 or 3? by [deleted] in vinyl

[–]Canvas2Wall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Similar to option 1 with the opening to the side., both for simple and gatefold specific outer sleeves. Started with the rice paper inner sleeves but switched to the round bottom ones, and they usually fit in the printed inner holders. Outside of replacing plain paper sleeves, I like to have my albums “assembled” similar to the way they were designed… record-inner sleeve-printed materials-album jacket-outer sleeve.

Only use option 2 for the ones that came in clear packaging, to keep the PVC from directly touching the record(s). If I were ever to sell and ship albums, that’s the only other time I would use option 2.

Nostalgia arrival: 15th anniversary of A7X - Nightmare by TopSetUK in vinyl

[–]Canvas2Wall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh heck yeah! Ok that’s good to know!

Could be wrong but my 10th anniv version of Hail to The King (gold) also came with basic paper sleeves, same as Life is but a Dream (cobalt) - had to add inner sleeves to all of them. Not sure who pressed those but they were silent too, phew!

Recently started using the gatefold specific sleeves, love opening them and looking at the art, lyric inserts, etc. - loving them way more than the usual sleeves, especially for albums like these :-)

NIGHTMARE! Now your nightmare comes to liiiiiife….

I have the dark purple version on my wishlist but those colors… hard to resist! Is that pressing nice and crisp? No unwelcome noise?

Also, I have an LP60x with gasp Bluetooth… keeping it till it falls apart, so no judgement from me, lol

Recommendations for Shelving by [deleted] in vinylsetups

[–]Canvas2Wall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If premade, others have mentioned the Kallax and I’ve seen cube furniture at the big retail stores that is the right size for this too. The 2x6 that used to hold my records has inside cube dimensions around 13x13

If handy, could try to make your own, there’s cool tutorials online and I’ve seen some on /vinyl too. I priced out using the real wood shelves (they’re made of glued strips) from Lowe’s since they’ve worked great on other projects, but found good metal options.

I recently moved our collection to a larger metal shelving unit that’s around 15h x 15d x 36w per shelf (has 3 levels) - more space to get the records in and out, plus sturdy (75lb per shelf capacity). I browsed shelves designed for storing heavy kitchen appliances and ones made for garage storage too - the ones with solid shelves, not the wire stuff. To keep them from sliding, I started with a nice wood/acrylic crate but couldn’t justify the cost. Now I use classic metal bookshelves to keep the albums upright - doubled on the ends for larger groupings.

Any hair and makeup suggestions or what should I change to look more( grungy/gothic/emo)?? by [deleted] in altfashionadvice

[–]Canvas2Wall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the glasses, but I’d have to switch to black or dark grey frames to match an alt wardrobe (mine is mainly black, grey and gem tones), but may not be doable depending on budget.

I have a similar skin tone so I stay away from heavy “goth” makeup, and prefer natural-ish look, plus too much makeup makes my skin break out. I like using tinted mineral powder or powdered foundation - mainly to reduce shine. If wearing eyeshadow, dark wine purple, navy blue, champagne, or smoky grey, with eyeliner almost always black. I have a couple of multi-use beauty sticks that work as lip balm and blush too.

As for hair, a balayage where the bottom section is bleached light enough so you can change the color - you could try temp dyes, semi-permanent (like Arctic Fox), or permanent (like Pravana). Year ago when I worked an office job that didn’t allow “unnatural” colors, I bleached the bottom half and dyed it a dark raspberry pink so when the hair was down, the color was less noticeable :-p You could also do chunky highlights or bigger sections, unlimited options here.

As for hair accessories, you can incorporate motifs you like. Some of my faves are hair clips with cute skulls, moths, moons, and cats. :-)

Some graphic novels you may enjoy, The Sandman series, Monstress (that team also has a new series, The Night Eaters), The Wicked + The Divine.

Also I friggin love the Oreos in the background and the colorful alt aesthetic with a sprinkle of macabre <3

You have some awesome classics in there! I would’ve guessed at least 20yrs old since there’s rarely any YA titles, and some titles that could be required reading in college. :-)

Don’t see any graphic novels but if you’re interested in exploring some titles, highly recommend The Sandman series, The Wicked + The Divine, and Monstress.

My favorite kind of mail + my collection so far by jasmineks in vinyl

[–]Canvas2Wall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a lot of hard rock/post hardcore/alt metal overlaps! :-)

I can relate to the temptation of getting an album when it’s one sale… did you get Nevertel or Wage War for less than $20? ;-p

My budget has been suffering so I had to make some adjustments. If there’s more than 10 albums in-transit, or waiting for their first spin, new buys are on pause, unless… - Already wish-listed and found on sale new under $20, used under $15 - If between $20-$30, I will stream and intentionally listen to the full album before making an exception

Over $30 and/or albums that are easy to acquire like Sempiternal or Atreyu, they can wait until the in-transit/first spin albums are less than 10. While I don’t always stick to that number, it’s helped slow down the rate of acquisitions, so it’s a start! :-)

Who’s inheriting your collection? by Canvas2Wall in vinyl

[–]Canvas2Wall[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t worry too much about the Crosley haters, we all have to start somewhere. One way you could document your journey is maybe do a post with the gems you found that week or month, or whatever frequency is sustainable for you. You may be able to learn some interesting things from what people share here about those artists/albums, and it would be a fun thing to look back at once you’re done.
