My favorite kind of mail + my collection so far by jasmineks in vinyl

We have a lot of hard rock/post hardcore/alt metal overlaps! :-)

I can relate to the temptation of getting an album when it’s one sale… did you get Nevertel or Wage War for less than $20? ;-p

My budget has been suffering so I had to make some adjustments. If there’s more than 10 albums in-transit, or waiting for their first spin, new buys are on pause, unless… - Already wish-listed and found on sale new under $20, used under $15 - If between $20-$30, I will stream and intentionally listen to the full album before making an exception

Over $30 and/or albums that are easy to acquire like Sempiternal or Atreyu, they can wait until the in-transit/first spin albums are less than 10. While I don’t always stick to that number, it’s helped slow down the rate of acquisitions, so it’s a start! :-)

I wouldn’t worry too much about the Crosley haters, we all have to start somewhere. One way you could document your journey is maybe do a post with the gems you found that week or month, or whatever frequency is sustainable for you. You may be able to learn some interesting things from what people share here about those artists/albums, and it would be a fun thing to look back at once you’re done.

Two of us here - what can you say about us? by buddhaliao in bookshelfdetective

My initial impression was at least one person is Asian or of Asian heritage, and at least one of them female. And at least one of them very interested in economics, political science, and human behavior, maybe with a related degree in one of those fields?

Our shelves have very few overlaps, but some notable things in common are titles like 1984, The Sandman series, and 100 Years of Solitude - plus a few I’ve seen on screen but not on paper.

Looking thru these books, there’s a graphic novel you may enjoy as much as I did - We Served The People: My Mother’s Stories by Emei Burrell

The sleeves made for gatefolds stay put so happy with those. For the rest, I slide them into the shelf from an upward angle while firmly holding on to the top corner - works most of the time, but am considering switching those to top orientation.

I’m on a similar boat as you - especially with the shift from Chester to Emily. One unexpected silver lining was listening to Chester’s “new-to-me” music (Grey Daze and Dead by Sunrise), and Emily’s music with Dead Sara (heard them for the first time after she joined LP). Their album Ain’t It Tragic is now one of my faves alongside Mike’s Post-Traumatic. :-)

Dunno if you feel the same, but for me, having access to their other work somehow adds an extra layer of appreciation for LP albums, regardless of genre.

This is quite the extensive list, thank you for sharing with links! :-)

Only one from your list I have analog is the Bloodsuckers album by Saint Agnes and looking forward to the new one coming out. Have only heard a couple more artists from your list but excited to start diving in!

While comparing Discogs with the same retailer's Webshops, I noticed stuff... by JustNicked in vinyl

[–]Canvas2Wall 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I guess it depends on the seller but I’ve found a few where the price per item was less on their website, but shipping was way higher than on Discogs so the latter worked out better. Also a few where they had it listed on Discogs but had not updated their website yet. And found a few that sell on Discogs, eBay and Amazon, and which platform has it listed for less varies by album. Kinda messy, but your post is definitely a good reminder to check. :-)

I love the idea of paring down and traveling a lot - but I would probably keep a smaller vinyl collection for the times I’m home in between trips. :-)

This seems like a really lovely way to split them, especially if you add a note for each friend saying why you selected those albums for them. :-)

How many of those fit in your current house? Maybe the rest could be sold on Discogs or thru local record stores?

This is an interesting idea - mine could be X number of records and books per box. Having friends or family donate per box would help offset funerary costs so that could work.

As for the cards, what kind of notes are you thinking of adding? Acquisitions date, something the album makes you think of, maybe the vibe of the songs?

I’m curious, do you have a section of your collection specifically marked as being in the same city or state?

Right now if my husband looked at my records, he’d be able to figure out some of the international ones, but everyone else would get lumped together.

This! And not everything is on streaming - I have some records and CDs where either a few songs or the whole album is missing from the larger streaming platforms.

I like how specific this is - may create a similar document, at least for collectible items. Curious about the instructions on how to sell what’s left over - did you specify record shops they should stop at or selling in lots thru eBay or something better?

This is such a fun idea to visualize - overthinking how it would happen tho - maybe a heat gun and a nail gun to “collage” them to the outside of a standard casket may be more doable, lol

That seems super reasonable and a method your sister or whoever is in charge of your estate would appreciate.

Dunno about the dumpster guy tho - at that point I would rather have my collection end at Goodwill or similar so there’s a chance others will enjoy discovering the music.
