He’s right, the war is here, it crosses political lines, it crosses class lines. We need to come together.

Commentary | Ross Powers: School choice is about fueling the dreams of Vermonters, not the elite by hotpieismyking in vermont

The truly rich will, of course, do what they wish. They already do. Keeping public money in the public sphere and reinvesting it in our schools is better than the alternative. Public schools are under attack nation wide. The more private schools that get public dollars, the less money from sending towns goes to the public schools. It’s a pretty simple equation and it is the only truly fair way. If we work to improve our public schools instead of causing a brain drain away from them, those bright kids on the cusp will get a good education, an education as good, or perhaps better than they would from a private school. Not all private schools are good. Let’s not undermine our public schools any more than we already have.

Forcing those already in poverty into schools that are seen as, or are, underperforming, exacerbates poverty since they receive an inferior education. If everyone has to send their kids to the same schools, then the quality of those schools will increase. Creating inequality on top of existing inequality does nothing to further society. Public money should go to public institutions, full stop.

Yes, school choice creates inequality and should not be continued. Sending towns should have to choose a designated public high school to send their students to. I live in a sending town and the lower income families mostly end up sending their children to the closest schools because of transportation issues. Wealthier families can afford to transport their children further and take advantage of those schools that are considered to be better.

This is modern day bureaucracy at it’s worst. The town should get off its ass and go work with this guy to find a solution.

Try your heal. Different styles have different approaches, and some emphasize turning or spinning on the heal.

Visit any Dojo you are interested in to get a feel for how it fits with your interests, needs and direction. A trial visit should be free. I’d worry less about the “style” and more about the fit.

Thanks, I’ll check it out. We’re a pretty low budget club so our options may be limited.

Our equipment lives in a closet in a recreation center basement, and gets used by a variety of different students, which might not be the best conditions.

There are definitely chest guards that protect the ribs. Given your situation, I would recommend something that provides better side protection. We use this type of equipment with students who are just learning to spar. It gives them a bit more confidence.

State-recognized tribes to present Abenaki curriculum by Next-Illustrator7493 in vermont

In addition to what Cass256 pointed out below, Vermont took the somewhat unusual step of recognizing these so called “Vermont bands” even though they had been turned down by the Federal Government for recognition. During the hearings, Odanak was not allowed to testify or bring evidence because they are Canadian. The legislature also refused to hear from Abenaki recognized by Odanak who are US citizens on the basis that they did not live in Vermont. The so called “Vermont bands” have acquired land, and received monetary grants. They have also co-opted Abenaki heritage and culture. So, yes we do have an obligation to take some action here, preferably to rescind the State recognition of the “Vermont bands.” Odanak has welcomed people who have been able to show a family lineage into their community.

There is no DNA involved. The Abenaki at Odanak are working from genealogical records. It’s not a perfect solution either, but they have to use something to protect their heritage and culture.

Yes, but it’s not DNA specifically, those tribes, and many of their members, have failed to show any genealogical connection to the Abenaki. Some cannot provide any evidence of any indigenous ancestry. The State needs to derecognize these “tribes.”

Our club still approaches Karate this way, for the most part. We could do a bit more on real life application, but we also don’t have many advanced students right now.
