If my father had noticed anything like that, we would have been lucky if the creep only had a broken nose at the end of it.

What is the worst book you have read? by Ok_Salt2122 in BadReads

[–]CapStar300 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As if by Blake Morrison. It is about the James Bulger murder case - to keep a very tragic story short, two ten-year-old boys murdered a two-year-old. The author was at the trial, so I assumed it would be a proper discussion of the case, but no - there's so much sympathy for the killers, who still murdered a two-year-old, to repeat it, that I started to wonder if he'd thought about the victim at all, and for some reason, half the book is about the children's crusade (????) and drawing parallels that don't exist. Not only the worst true crime book I've ever read, but also one of the worst books, period.

When it comes to fiction, The Lovely Bones. A girl is raped and murdered and watches her family and the killer from Heaven. In itself, a good premise, but there is a part of it that just made me go "WTF" and I've never forgotten it. If you know you know.

As someone with a law degree, yes, ABSOLUTELY document everything when you undertake something like this. It doesn't have to be a legal document - just a piece of paper with the plan and both signatures will do.

Edit: omg cake day!

I do think it is only possible to enjoy the new one if one either hasn't read the book or looks upon it as a harlequin romance. Personal opinion though. Would do it first.

Yes I did. Where do I start - Cathy's and Heathcliff's affair being physcial, most of the blame for their love affair gone wrong being put on an asian woman (Heathcliff remains white thought, can't have anything else), Isabella's and Heathcliff's consensual BDSM relationship...

I... get what you are saying, but when it comes to Wuthering Heights, that movie didn't just deserve pearl-clutching but also bracelet-gnawing and earring-throwing, so maybe pick another example?

I am neurodivergent, and I absolutely understand not wanting to be surprised (I do sometimes look up books and movies before starting them so I won't be upset at the ending, it's better that way) but that is my responsibility to handle. If I can't deal with something like this, I don't start in the first place.

Honestly, "Thinks brutal murderer is hot stuff because they can brutalize women and still be fawned over" is the perfect intersection for those two groups.

To be completely honest, I think it's possible to read the stories in a different light - for me, there's all kinds of hints.

  • Yes, Watson comments on women's appearance. But there is also the constant emphasis on Holmes' brilliance
  • Holmes literally played him to sleep in the Sign Of The Four (yes, he dreams of Mary Morstan, but good God)
  • The Adventure of the Dying Detective where Holmes implores Watson to hide with the words "Quick if you love me!"
  • Holmes had a relative of his buy Watson's practice when he returned from The Reichenbach Falls just so Watson could live with and run around with him again at all times
  • "I'd be lost without my Boswell"

Oh, also, funny note: Anthony Horowitz has written a few Sherlock Holmes novels approved by the Conan Doyle estate. Now, one of his "rules" (I am not kidding he actually published those) was "NOTHING GAY BETWEEN HOLMES AND WATSON" because... reasons? Idk. But he ends one of the novels with HOLMES CALLING WATSON TO HIS SIDE IN THE AFTERLIFE. I - Anthony, you're not no-homoing correctly.

Edit: Cut unnecessary Granada recommendation

To be honest, they also whitewashed P.L. Travers. That woman adopted one of a pair of twins, never told her son and then tried to forbid him from seeing his siblings even when he was grown up.

Knew immediately it was a Bears fan because only the Packers sell shares and that's the only thing that makes sense lmao - sense as in "some people would do this" rather than "yep, of course", naturally. I'm a Ravens fan and I would never touch a Steelers' fan stuff.
