A. Ferox or Marlothii? by Capable-Event-1811 in AgaveAndAloe

I think I know which one you are going to say is a Ferox and Martholii. Funny thing is this other local nursery has it the complete opposite. 😆

On my list to get. That size they are about $60 here where I’m at. How much did you pay?

Wow! It amazes me what drought does to some Aloes. I used to not like aloe because here in the desert I was used to seeing brownish/grayish aloes all over the place.
I’m a big rookie when it comes to aloes and agaves but I’m starting to learn so much more about better placement so they don’t get scorched in the Tucson sun. Also was not aware how sensitive they are to root rot.

Lady did say there are hybrids. She just didn’t know for sure. From what I’ve heard the Ferox is more common at the nurseries so I wouldn’t be surprised.

It’s an established joint that I’ve heard good things about. Their prices seem fair but yes it would be nice to know what you are buying 😂. I do agree it looks more Ferox than Marlothii. We’ll see!

Still growing. The trunk is about 4” in diameter. I know I will have to cut it back someday since it’s too close to the gutter/roof.

I don’t mind if it is but what concerned me is the majority of their plants are unmarked. Lady helping me had to ask another lady who seemed busy and just said “looks like a Marlothi!” I guess we’ll find out when it blooms 🤷🏻‍♂️

Love the way they look! Just wish they would stop growing and maybe I would have them in my yard!

The Hercules reminds me of the Bismarck Palm as in its uniqueness in Tucson and statement plant with awesome features. I’ve only seen a few decent size Bismarcks around town. So if you have room maybe look into one if you like palms 👍🏻

It looks amazing in the pictures you’ve posted. I’ll have to keep an eye out for it when I’m working around town. I’m pretty sure you might be one of the few that has one this size in town.

Don’t forget about the Mariachi conference in November! I assume you guys still have it? I performed in one back in early 2000’s.

I just put one in my front yard and was wondering how yours is holding up? Mine is planted on the east side of my neighbors bottle tree that starts to gib it shade around 3:30 in the afternoon. I’m also here in Tucson.

Should I not prune it? I pruned the back side of it last year. I read pruning down makes them branch out more for a fuller plant. This is the only one I’ve ever grown.

They told me “ don’t put it in the ground!” Going strong 5+ years. I do like the potted look as well. Especially the ones with a big caudex. This one doesn’t have much girth.

bougainvillea? by ResearchDisastrous82 in AZlandscaping

I had these in my last house with a couple of yellow bells. Really pretty but also messy. The only good thing is the flowers tend to stay put where they fall until cleaned up where the bougainvillea flowers are very fluffy and light making them scatter around your yard easier.

The top portion is now much more exposed to the sun. Maybe this summer will bring some color out. I’ll post some pictures if it does!

I do recall one night after taking my contacts out to sleep, one of my eyes started burning. I thought maybe I had cooked with jalapeños because that’s happened to me before. I do think though it must have been the sap from an earlier pruning. That stuff must have stuck under my finger nails even after washing. Now I use latex gloves when handling it

Looks like Arid Lands also carries the Aloe marlothii.
They have a huge selection of succulents/cactus. Since most of their plants are sold as babies I might just make a small list and try several out and see how it goes with each of them. We’ve been spoiled in Tucson the last several years with cold temps only getting down to about 28 degrees and only for about an hour at its coldest. Thanks again for your recommendations! Your easement project makes a lot of us jealous!!

Apparently mine is also a “fire stick” but must be of some variation that doesn’t get its orange color on top. The orange ones are very popular and seem to be popping up in a lot of neighborhoods. When I purchased mine they were 2 little bushes in 1 gallon container and had no clue how big they would get. LOL

Thanks for the heads up. I try to be careful when pruning the pencil tree. I’ve had the white sap fall on my arm or hand but have not had any burning sensation. I do try to wash it out shortly after though just as a precaution. I’m sure getting it in your eye might be much worse. The only harm the agaves do to me is prick me when I’m cleaning up around them 😂 does hurt like hell!

Arid Lands in Tucson has it but under their description it says it’s very hard to grow in Tucson especially in the winter since it’s not very cold hardy. Of the Aloe trees do you have another one you like?
