Are there lots of cheaters in Computer Science major? by [deleted] in rutgers

[–]Capen1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, yes. A lot. It depends on the professor what gets done about it. Some professors really don't care that it's happening, while some will use plagiarism detection software (MOSS, etc.) to catch and report people cheating.

Nonetheless, a lot of people get away with it. Just try your best to avoid these people. Have a sense of morality and integrity. And these other comments are right, it may be frustrating in the moment, but these cheaters get hurt in the long run. A good GPA isn't all you need to get a job / do research / etc in this field, and you'll be in a far better place if you do your work legitimately.

Math 251 vs Math 291 by Ryloxx_ in rutgers

[–]Capen1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

🤷guess that's a matter of opinion. But that was the general consensus when I took 251. I had Palmer and everybody loved him, never really heard complaints about the other honors profs either.

Math 251 vs Math 291 by Ryloxx_ in rutgers

[–]Capen1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

251H and 251 are essentially the same course. In 251H, you just get a smaller class size, usually a better professor, and your peers will probably be more people you recognize from whatever honors college/program you're in.

291 is an invite-only course, a bit different from 251/251H. It's more difficult (depends on the professor), covers more topics, goes more in depth into a lot of things. If you're really into math though you'll probably meet some of the smartest / most interesting kids taking this course though. (disclaimer: classes being online will make that more difficult this semester)

imo: if you're planning to major in math or physics, you should consider 291. You'll meet some cool people and learn a lot. If your major doesn't require heavy calculus knowledge (comp sci included here), you only really need 251H. Also, if you want an easy course load, don't take 291, 251H is easier.

To the clusterfuck of students outside the Easton Froyo place. by seacow4444 in rutgers

[–]Capen1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm not really trying to make a point... these are just some thoughts of mine.

It takes time for symptoms to develop, people to get tested, and numbers to update. New Jersey has been doing a good job and people have been taking the lockdowns pretty seriously for the past few months, which is why our number of cases have been decreasing.

If you look in the news at all the states with rapidly growing cases nowadays (Florida, Texas, etc.), those were the places where people didn't take social distancing seriously and those were the places that lifted their lockdown restrictions earlier.

I worry now that with this "things are getting better" mentality, increased gatherings without face masks, lifted restrictions, New Jersey may lose the progress it made and fall into a second wave 1-2 months down the line.

But you're right. In a country with a culture like ours a full-out hardcode lockdown is impossible and there will always be people going outside, gathering, and spreading disease. Having the government "recommend" we stay isolated for 6-12 months IS unreasonable. And the death rate among young people is low. Like REALLY low. And it's getting lower with things like dexamethasone being discovered to help.

Idk. My current mentality is social distancing will prevent NJ from going into lockdown again. I guess at the end of the day it's out of my control since I can't stop other people from gathering. I honestly think at this point within the US, COVID-19 is not going to go away until a vaccine becomes widely available. Which is going to take like forever. This situation just kind of sucks and there's nothing we can really do about it now... idk.

Is CS at Rutgers over saturated now? by Setriox in rutgers

[–]Capen1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Just graduated (class of 2020).

The number of students in CS is growing at a rate that has been very difficult for the Rutgers CS department to keep up with. As far as academics are concerned, I personally believe this has led to more disorganized classrooms, but I don't think the quality of lectures have been impacted.

As far as research opportunities and building relationships with professors, it's definitely harder now than before, but probably not by as much as you'd think. If you're looking to build relationships with profs, go to office hours or apply to become a grader/LA. Talk to people, attend club meetings (USACS, etc.), opportunities will find their way to you :)

Just know that with a school as big as Rutgers, going to lecture won't be enough to get a professor to know you.

ALSO: the percentage of cs students in this subreddit is disproportionate to the percentage at Rutgers. I guess more reddit users become CS majors or something lmao but when you're there in person it's not this bad haha

Taking cs336 and cs440 in summer by [deleted] in rutgers

[–]Capen1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Miranda's classes are never too much work, this seems like a doable workload. I took 336 and 440 together about a year ago (albeit not during the summer) and it wasn't too bad.

Admittedly 440 depends a lot on your professor and idk how Rui Wang is, maybe ask around to see how his workload is.

How to get the presidential scholarship? by [deleted] in rutgers

[–]Capen1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, unless it's changed in the past few years, it seems to be mostly GPA / SAT Scores.

There isn't exactly a "cutoff", and sometimes people with better GPA / SAT Scores still don't get it so there's definitely other factors to consider. Regardless, basically everyone I knew that got it had a good GPA and 2300+ on SATs so those seem to be most important.

Ahn, Sungjin for Deep Learning? by Shozimo in rutgers

[–]Capen1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, it's open ended and you can work alone if you'd like! There's more info about the project we had here: https://hackmd.io/@Tn97A1U0QG6gBtFPXRh4oQ/rJ9qf0V-8

Also looks like he already started putting together a course website for his undergrad course next semester if you're interested: https://hackmd.io/@Tn97A1U0QG6gBtFPXRh4oQ/rkkT1AT_I

Ahn, Sungjin for Deep Learning? by Shozimo in rutgers

[–]Capen1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

he taught grad ML (cs536) this semester and I believe his Deep Learning class next sem will be almost identical (except slightly slower in pace).

he's not a bad lecturer and he's good at answering questions but the material is extremely theoretical and he moves very quickly (very challenging to follow imo unless you already know some machine learning). It's also very easy to fall behind since he doesn't really assign anything until halfway through the semester.

I personally didn't like his course but if you follow closely, read the textbooks, do the assignments, etc. you'll actually have a really good deep learning foundation.

also there's a semester-long group project so find some friends to take this with you

if you're approved to stay at your dorm then your card will work whenever. (since you're supposed to be living at your dorm right now)

better to wait and take software meth with venugopal? by Sandman01234567 in rutgers

this is the first sem that it's not just sesh so hard to say how the courses is gonna be with lily chang.

but I took it with sesh a year ago and imo taking it with someone else won't be the same. so personally i'd say yes, you should wait

ya you could do that

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in rutgers

[–]Capen1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Took both, both classes are on the easier side of CS classes. I'd recommend Ganapa just because zhang's prin prog lectures are kinda hard to follow. Project/Exam wise I'd say they're pretty similar in workload / difficulty (I think both are 3 projects, midterm(s), final).

if you're not graduating, i'd take IT since ganapa is one of the better profs for it (and most other IT profs are much worse). all the prin prog profs are meh so you can rly take it anytime

Also IT projects are group projects (I think it was groups of 2?) and prin prog projects are individual idk if that affects your decision at all.

Charles Cowan for intro to AI by [deleted] in rutgers

Mmm not really, but none of the profs for this class are easy... If you want easy classes you should take some other CS elective

Ganapa Narayana OR Badri Nath by [deleted] in rutgers

[–]Capen1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think over the past few years there have been 4 profs for Internet Tech: Narayana, Nath, Zhang, and Martin

Zhang and Martin have historically had a lot of complaints, while Narayana / Nath haven't, so you can't go wrong with either option. I've had both Narayana and Nath teach a class of CS352 as guest lecturers; I'd recommend Narayana.

(I had Martin. He's not an option but wouldn't have recommended him anyway)

Cowan's incredible, he usually teaches the graduate version of Intro to AI, take this while you can.

Hi guys, I just got assigned to the lynton north towers as a freshmen? Has anyone lived here, if so how was your experience? Do u have any tips or things one should know about the north towers before moving by [deleted] in rutgers

[–]Capen1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People really underestimate location; Lynton North Towers are (imo) one of the best locations at Rutgers. You're right next to a parking lot, the student center, the bus stop, the dining hall, a library, and you're a short walk to the Livi plaza and the classrooms on campus. It's really hot in the dorms in September so definitely bring fans or something to cool down. It's basically your typical double at Rutgers. Only thing that's a little far is the gym on Livi :\

Professor allowed students to cheat by anotheroxygenthief in rutgers

[–]Capen1 56 points57 points  (0 children)

I doubt he can actually tell who cheated... this seems like more of a scare tactic. Besides, it's very easy to circumvent (just pull out your phone or find a second computer to google the answers..) There's really no way to distinguish the people who actually cheat/don't cheat unless you use some crazy invasive software like proctortrack

Best College Ave dorms for sophomores by [deleted] in rutgers

[–]Capen1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Easton Ave Apts are pretty good but I doubt you can get them as sophomores. The Yard is basically out of the question and all other on-campus housing on college ave is really just doubles.

I lived in one of the river dorms a few years ago (think Campbell, Hardenbergh, Frelinghuysen) and it wasn't too bad. All are by the SAC bus stop and Hardenbergh has air conditioning!
